Hi! I'm putting this on for W.E. Sorry, I'm not as fast as she is but here is the recap. Tonight we were treated to different dances instead of just two. We are to the point where they get to pick a dance they haven't done yet, plus we are treated to a Group Number by the seven couples left. This is the first Group Number. We will get a second one from them all on the finale night. Tom announces it as a "Rootin' Tootin' Country Dance.

Jason & Edyta-CHA-CHA--Best of My Love
Practice: Jason continues to be down on himself. Says he sucks. Edyta gives him help by taking him to a place to do Freestyle from hip-hop choreographer, Sho-Tyme. Jason says, "JT's gonna get his Cha-Cha on!".
Dance: Looked a little awkward. Footwork problem. He constantly watches Edyta's feet instead of looking up.
Len: It was full on. Lots of content. You captured the flavor of the dance. You went off time a little bit. 8
Bruno: You were flamboyant; you were having fun. You did mess up the timing a little bit. 8
Carrie: Awkwardness in your arms. When out of hold, they don't know where to go. Be bigger on your movements. 8
TOTAL: 24

Shannon & Derek-RUMBA--True Colors
Practice: Derek got Shannon flowers because she was so down on herself. How sweet! He takes her to the beach to help her get the movement. They play with hula hoops to help her hips. Plus it was so romantic!
Dance: Beautiful, passionate! Wonderful moves, but I like to see a little of the traditional Rumba in there, just me I guess, other than Len. Otherwise, I loved it!
Bruno: The romantic interplay definitely worked. You were Sizzling BUT, No hip action. Work on it. 8
Carrie: You have such great potential. You're attitude is so great. Week 6-We're beyond potential. You have that ability to sustain. 8
Len: Come on baby, light my fire. They were all over each other like a rash. Great chemistry. Needed a bit more hip action. Quite pleased. Tom then quips to watch out for Len's new album--Len Goodman does the hits of Jose Feliciano. It'll be great...Light My Fire. 8
TOTAL: 24

Samantha: Tried to get something out of them as far as a relationship but Derek just said that they are just getting into character and getting the characterization so they can do the routines the best they can. Yeah...uh, huh! Then, because of the way Samantha was questioning them, Tom said that "this weekend Samantha will be grilling inmates at Gitmo".

Tom announces that "in two weeks it will be the shows 100th episode celebration. We have exceptional entertainment with 30 returning stars, a ton of surprises and never before seen routines featuring Mario Lopez, Apollo Anton Ono with Julianne Hough, Mel B & Maxim will be back."

Marlee & Fabian-MAMBO--Spanish song
Practice: Marlee says this is the hardest! Fabian is the "Mambo King" and she doesn't want to let him down. She called Henry Winkler to come to "give her a kick in the butt", as she put it because she was down on herself. Henry said not to "dwell on past mistakes. Knows her spirit. Her spirit is intense & on fire. There is nothing you can't do....Her legs are going to Mambo them into submission.". Then gave her a big hug. Marlee says that he helped her perspective.
Dance: Was even more difficult than last week. It was a good routine but it wasn't as smooth as she has done on other dances. Lost timing in spots. Fabian had to put her on track again. I still admire her but this wasn't as good as some of the others. I'm afraid she might be in trouble this week. Depending on her fanbase.
Carrie: Tries to put herself in Marlee's position but just can't. Know she is struggling. This was hardest dance so far. Looked like you were forcing and struggling. Wanted to see so much more.7
Len: You've proved the only limitations are the ones you've put on yourself. Great inspiration. Great job, just looked uncomfortable. 7
Bruno: Watching you is unbelieveable. Mambo, timing is crucial. You lost it a few times, a few stumbles. 7
TOTAL: 21 Samantha: Talks about the group number coming up and asks Marlee what it was like with 12 other people around her besides just Fabian. Marlee says it was fun. They got to play and work all together while still dancing with Fabian. "Country-Western was fun. Everyone is going to love it."

Cristián & Cheryl-FOXTROT--Come Fly With Me
Practice: "Call me, Frederico Astaire!" Can't get arms and hands right. Still too stiff. Cheryl has him go into a pool and practice moving his arms. They flow a lot better. "After this dance I hope I will no longer be known as Cristián de la Fuente but instead Cristián de la Foxtrot".
Dance: Loved it! He finally had good posture, good footwork. He looked gorgeous as usual!
Len: If you are in the bottom 2 tomorrow, I'll show my bum in the supermarket. Best dance, nice job. Cris goes up to shake his hand. 9
Bruno: First wipes the picture of Len from his mind, LOL! While Tom says, "I hope you are in the frozen food section.". Cristián at his dashing best! Footwork was excellent! 9
Carrie: Fine line from rigid into refined. You passed way into refined. As Cris hides behind Cheryl not knowing what Carrie is going to say to him. Every detail was fantastic! 9
TOTAL: 27

Samantha: Tells Samantha that maybe he isn't Latin afterall since the Foxtrot is his best dance.

Before C & C saw their scores, we got a quick peek at the group rehearsing the Country dance as we go to break. Everyone is goofing around. Pretending they are shooting with their fingers, lassoing, etc. Tom tells us that since the judges won't be scoring, lifts, tricks, general mayhem is allowed.

Marissa & Tony-VIENNESE WALTZ--Delilah (not a song for a VW, but that's JMO)
Practice: Tony takes her to an arial arts class to overcome her problem with dizziness in spinning since the dance has a lot of spins.
Dance: Good job. She carried herself well. Footwork fine, great ending with a drop/spin on the floor.
Bruno So light & frothy. You did some very technical moves. Very good. 8:
Carrie: You showed us a whole new side of yourself. The sophistication, elegance, nice lines. 9
Len: You have grown and improved. You are a true princess. 9
TOTAL: 26

Samantha: Marissa is screaming and jumping up and down and hugging Tony saying that she is so happy that she got a 9... two 9s. Samantha asks her if she is looking forward to the group number since she is a Broadway person and Marissa just says she is so happy to be there for the group number. She just loves everyone and is so happy. To which Tom quips, "Cheer Up".

Kristi & Mark-JIVE--Rip It Up
Practice: They were asked by Tiger Woods to perform at his Tigerjam last weekend. Back to practice right after. Kristi accidentally points her toes in which Mark corrects and Kristi reveals that she was born with club feet. Shows pictures of her as baby with casts on her feet. Something she has had to overcome throughout her life. She has put her all into this Jive.
Dance: Another terrific performance! She's got the facial expressions great too! They really look like they are having fun. Mark looks so different with the Buddy Holly glasses.
Carrie: Gives a Standing O. That's what I'm talking about! That was my favorite dance performed all season! Great choreography! Wonderful! 10
Len: Like a bullfight. Great choreography! A Smorgesbord of dance! Loved it! 10
Bruno: Top notch high definition entertainment. You nailed it technically. You performed the best you ever had. My favorite dance of tonight! 10
TOTAL: 30 First one of the season!!

Tom announces that coming up in the Macy's Stars of Dance will be Mario Lopez and the cast of Broadway's A CHORUS LINE; a mind blowing tribute to Michael Jackson's "Thriller; and tomorrow night, Riverdance. Ashley Simpson will also sing tomorrow night.

Tom then acknowledges Paula Abdul in the audience. You can see that Teri Seymour, Simon's girlfriend and ET correspondent, is sitting right next to her. Tom then says, "You know why she's here don't you? Twice as many British judges."

Mario & Karina-RUMBA--Let's Get It On
Practice: Called his little brother back in Baltimore and the kid called him "Poopy". Told Mario not to listen to Len. Mario dedicates the dance to his little brother but he should cover his eyes during the steamy parts.
Dance: Opens shirt, very sexy. Hot, sexy number! Mario Lopez should be jealous.
Len: Did a good job but didn't like the characterization. Too raunchy for him. Plus they did a lift. 9
Bruno: Fabulous! It was savage, primevil lust! A smoking 10!
Carrie: That was better than good sex! Ridiculously good! Dock for a lift. 9
TOTAL: 28

Group Number rehearsal--The Showdown: Jason & Kristi square off. The girls are the Sheriffs and the guys are the Outlaws. Shows them practicing square dance. Shows pictures of judges on Wanted posters with mustaches and devil horns drawn on. A lot of fooling around along with learning lifts and other moves.

Group Number-Wild Wild West--Cotton-Eyed Joe--Great number. I loved the lifts. They all had a lot of fun and did a wonderful job.
Bruno--The United Nations of Dance. Not all was in sync but we got that at the end. Tom then quips that "also for sports fans, it's a chance to see Jason in a Cowboy's uniform". He is with the the Miami Dolphins.
Carrie-Little crazy. Thought the girls were stronger. Thinks the Sheriffs took this one.
Len--Great fun! Loads of energy. Loved Jason and Mario's lifts.

Ballroom Kids again tomorrow.

Next week--Two dances each.

Message:

Thanks for the recap, Linda.  You did a great job.

It was an ok night for dancing.  There was nothing too terrible and although Kristi did well, there was nothing too spectacular either.  In other news, I love Tom's quick witted remarks and I despise anything and everything Samantha says.

I pretty much agree with the order on the leaderboard.

Judges' Leaderboard:
30
-- Kristi & Mark
28 -- Mario & Karina
27 -- Cristian & Cheryl
26 -- Marissa & Tony
24 -- Jason & Edyta, Shannon & Derek
21 -- Marlee & Fabian

Kristi is still tops.  I like Mark's choreography and although he did luck out with two good partners, I bet he has superb teaching skills.

Mario has some seriously smooth hips.  He's also good at keeping his focus and staying in the moment.

Christian (de la Foxtrot) danced elegantly and for as much as a man his size can be, he looked somewhat dainty.

Marissa did surprisingly well.   She isn't as refined as she need be but there was a graceful fluidity about her as she moved across the floor.

Jason has a lot of potential but for now, he needs to stop looking at Edyta or her feet or his feet or whatever else might be down there.

Shannon was a victim of Derek's poor choreography.  I normally like Derek's dances (or are they Jonathan's?) but this week there were too many poses and not enough dancing.  In fairness to Derek, hip action clearly isn't Shannon's forte.

Marlee didn't do as well as she has in the past but I didn't think she did as bad as the judges made her out to be.

Encore dance?   Marissa & Tony - surely not the best dance but the judges like to mix it up and give others a chance.

Who's going home?  Although I'd prefer it to be Marissa, I think she did well enough to save herself.  That leaves either Marlee or Shannon and of the two, I'd say Marlee.

  • I reserve the right to change my answers. After reading Miss Harold's encore prediction, I agree they'll have everyone dance. ~gg
  • You're welcome and thanks so much, gg! Kristi has come to a point where she really has to do something to be worthy of that top spot. ~~ I just love Tom's remarks. I think he helps make the show more than they know. Samantha can be okay at times, but you would think that they would do something to make her an ''all around'' host. ~~ Mark does have good choreography. That and the teaching skills I think he gets from his parents who were ballroom champs and teachers, themselves. It is the same with Julianne and Derek who lived with Mark's parents for a good majority of their life. ~~ Mario is pretty focused and his hips are smooth along with other movements, LOL! Same with Cristián and I agree on his elegant dancing. I don't know about dainty, but sophisticated maybe. ~~ Marissa was more graceful than before still needs more. It could have been better choreography this time too. ~~ LOL! I like ''whatever else might be down there'' for what Jason is looking at. I didn't think of that but Edyta does have something to look at! But, yes, he does have to stop it. ~~ It was Derek's choreography but they could have had more dancing in there. They just aren't working on her problems properly. The only thing Jonathan did was step in to dance with Shannon when Derek was incapacitated. ~~ I agree about Marlee. She has been doing remarkably well but the dances have been getting harder and with two dances, things will start getting worse. She proved her point that a hearing impaired person can learn to dance and do competition. She is amazing. ~~ The Encore Dance--knowing that they went with the Group Number last year, it was a good possibility for the Encore Dance. You guessed right on Marlee, which is who I had in mind, but I would have guessed the same as you for the second one. Certainly not Mario! ~ eom. Linda

Tom really cracks me up. The show is worth watching just for him. Samantha gets on my nerves.

All the dancers impress me. Kristi was amazing, but she has been doing spins, lifts, and intricate choreographed footwork for decades as a professional skater. Since they're just competing for the mirror ball, I guess it doesn't matter if she has an advantage, but it would be pretty unfair if it was for a favorite charity or something.

I would love to see Mark and Kristi's routine again, but I'm guessing the encore dance will be the group dance.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I think Tom is one of the best hosts on TV today. Samantha is tolerable for me. She has her good and bad moments but she is beautiful and I love the dresses she wears. She's probably on there mostly for that. I wonder why she couldn't take classes in interviewing to strengthen that part of her. ~~ All the dancers were pretty good last night. It will be hard to see anyone go. Kristi has been exceptional. I will agree on the spins but the footwork is not the same. As Kristi said, herself, that with skates, they don't have to point their toes and she has had to remember to do that. Also with certain dances you lead with heal/toe and you don't do that in skating so the footwork is quite different for her. She also had been a single skater for some time. She started out in pair skating and knows lifts but then went solo so she hadn't done lifts in quite awhile either. I'm sure it comes back to you, though. I don't know about being unfair. There have been others with prior experience that haven't gotten as far and others without any dance experience that have won. Apolo Anton Ono and Emmitt Smith are two that are also athletes and won the top prize. Look at Sabrina last year. Her prior dance experience didn't help her to the win. A lot of it has to do with popularity. There have been several that have stayed in way past their time to leave just because of popularity. That wouldn't have been fair either if they would have won. Some people are just natural born learners and take to things easier than others. Kristi also knows how to stay focused and use her determination, things she just learned how to do in competing. ~~ You just might be right with the encore dance. That's probably what they will do. I think they did that last season too. I was thinking of Mark & Kristi's routine again but figured they wouldn't do it because of them just dancing last week. I agree, they will do the group dance. ~ eom. Linda
  • I guess I was thinking more of Kristi's dance training off the ice. All Olympic-class figure skaters have had many years of dance training. I have followed pairs skating for a long time, and the practice sessions they do off the ice are very much like the practice sessions we see on DWTS. Oh well, like I said, it's just a mirror ball trophy, LOL! -Miss H
  • I understand what you are saying and I did have that in mind and yet was just thinking of the ice too, if that is possible. I know that Kristi has had years of dance training for the ice so she can flow with the music, her arms are correct, all that and I'm sure that in taking this training she did learn to point her toes but then when it gets to putting it together with the ice, she can't do her feet the same way so it is forgotten. Kristi herself said that she was not used to putting her feet the way she has had to use them for these dance routines. She said that it was something she had to get used to. I'm sure, though, it didn't take her that long. Thanks for bringing it up though. It is something to think about. ~ eom. Linda

Thanks Linda for a great recap!

I enjoyed last night very much, especially the group number. They all seemed to be having such a good time. Tom was so funny with his remarks and Samantha was...well...Samantha.

Kristi and Mark were terrific as usual and Mario and Karina were HOT. I pretty much agree with the the comments regarding the other couples. I love Marlee and admire her so much for her courage ~ and Fabian for his support and encouragement ~ but I think she will may be going home tonight.

  • You're welcome, Aunt Hen. That group number was fun! Even the rehearsals looked like fun! I think they were letting off some steam! Tom is what makes this show-or the judges-more fun! I agree about Samantha but she had some good moments too, like trying to get Shannon & Derek to admit something that we've all been wondering. But they were pretty cool with those answers, LOL! ~~ Kristi and Mark & Mario and Karina were definitely the top performances. They just might be the ones to battle it out. I love Marlee and admire her too and Fabian has been great with her, but I agree that this might be it for her. In a way, it might be better with having to learn two dances from now on. If she makes it through, she could prove us wrong next week. She has such determination. ~ eom. Linda

    Hi Linda~

Thank you for this excellent, detailed recap. I know you're busy with AI NEWS so I'll be brief.

Good grief~~~Paula was 'in the house'!!!!!

BEST~~ Kristi, Cristian, & Mario - What a great top 3. They were F_A_B_U_L_O_U_S. Loved them all!

GOOD~~ Jason & Shannon - These two were fine but even *I* could see mistakes and I know nothing about the dance

WEAKEST~~ Marlee - I sure admire her and can't begin to understand how she does this. Kudos to the lady!

GETS ON MY NERVES~~ Marissa - Sorry, but she's annoying and looks too cumbersome on the dance floor

Tom's quip of the night about Samantha and Gitmo should earn him an Ugly Mini Disco Ball - (LOL)

Looking forward to the Results Show tonight with Thriller, Riverdance and the Juniors.

The 100th Episode Celebration should be FABOO!!!! (ok, I stole that from W.E.)

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • You're welcome, sb. Do you think it was too much? I tried to cut a lot out. -- Yes, Paula was there. What does that mean? Does she still want to be a contestant? I think she is overqualified even if she has never danced ballroom which seems to be the only reason they take some people with dance background, but she had choreographer background. Maybe Teri wants to do it too and try to teach Simon, LOL! ~~ Great top 3 this week! Jason has to really work to get back up there. I like Shannon. I just wish Derek could work on her hip movement a little more. Marlee - I like her so much but I'm afraid she won't stay long. I give her soooo much credit, though. She should get a separate award just for how she is able to keep up. She did so good in that group number too. ~~ I agree about Marissa. I understand all too well how Marissa looks with Tony and how she tried to look taller. Being a bigger gal she does do better than Penn Gillette did but there still is not that smoothness on the floor. If she would go tonight (depending on her fanbase), she would go out on her best score. She was so happy last night. ~~ Tom was in good form last night as always. I didn't even put down every pearl he said, LOL! The Results shows are really good this year and I'm looking forward to that 100th celebration! That should be one terrific show. W.E. should be happy that Maxim will be back! ~ eom. Linda
  • Forget W.E..................*I* want Maxim back!!!!!! She's got Johnny. (LOL) Paula is over qualified to dance and has the bad back.. Others have danced with health issues so I'm going to say that she has no place on the ballroom floor with her dancing skills and being a choreographer. Maybe they can turn this show into the ''profesionals'' as they've done with AI. They're not replacing any judges are they??? Since the shows are on at the same time in the spring, I have no idea how any of this could even be possible. /sb
  • LOL on Maxim! W.E. might want both! Can't blame her! But I much prefer Jonathan's personality myself. Re: Paula--If and that's a big IF, they would take her, I would think it would be in the fall. She could work out the six week practice prior to the first show with the AI auditions with her partner being wherever she is and they work there. By the time auditions are over, she would be totally free for the fall season. BUT, like I said above, I don't think it's going to happen. People are upset as it is with some of the contestants minimal knowledge of dance that I don't think it would be wise for the show to go with someone who has more experience and especially choreographer experience. DWTS is still going well on it's ratings for them to go that way. ~ eom. Linda

    Group dance was cute.

Kristi and Mark still in to win.

  • Yes, Marlee looks great. I guess she has lost 12 lbs. She has four children. There is an article about her and her family in People this week. LOL on Karina. It did look like a beach towel, didn't it? Edyta, too, looked like she only had half of a costume. The group dance was great. Kristi and Mark are holding strong. ~ eom. Linda
