Ugh!  I watched this movie last night and am still trying to figure it out.  The cinematography was AMAZING, particularly the WWII battle scenes, but I was bored to tears!  I will also give props to the music.  LOVED how they incorporated an old typewriter into the soundtrack.  The acting was also incredible.  Yet, each time I actually thought there was a plotline, the film would switch quickly to long drawn-out sequences that didn't move the story along in the least.  What there WAS of a story, that is.  Oh, and I liked the little "twist" ending, even though I'm still thinking that it seemed like a lot more than two hours spent on watching Atonement that I'm never going to get back.  : )

Did anyone here like this movie?  Why?

LOVED the emerald green gown that Kiera wore to dinner and to (ahem) meet with James.

I think I'm like you... it was so long... I enjoy James McAvoy, but the story just felt very negative and after all that time, I did not like the ending at all.  I was very disappointed in Atonement.

  • You know, I think I might have liked it with better editing. I'm glad I'm not alone in my opinion of it, though! --susie

Loved the book and the movie.  Why did I like the movie?  The casting, acting and production values were all excellent, and the movie was (mostly) true to the book.  If you understood that one jealous little girl's lie ruined the lives of two people in love, and that the girl never really repented and continued to tell herself delusional lies well into adulthood, then you followed it just fine.  Sorry you were bored.

  • There were a lot of reasons to enjoy the movie, but IMO none of the was the plot. --susie

I haven't seen the movie but the book was so rambling and boring I gave up about a third of the way into it. And I'm one who usually likes the book better than the movie.

  • LOL! Based on your description, the movie was VERY true to the book, Jinx! : ) --susie

It was a haunting movie and exhibits how one lie by a child can ruin more than one life. I loved it and it keeps replaying in my mind.

  • I wasn't expecting ''action,'' per se, but a little more of it would have helped push the story along. --susie

LOVED this movie! So moving, especially the end when it all comes together.  I cried even after the movie was over and we had gone to dinner!

The plot I got was that the two fell in love (gosh I am horrible w/names). The younger sister was jealous because she had a crush on the young man and made up a lie when the two younger children disappeared at the dinner party. The lie cost the young lovers their life together. And how they perished.... just days from being together again.... oh my gosh. Then at the end you find out that they never really spend all that time together. The younger sister (now old) made up the whole story in a book so that she could give the two lovers time together - it was the only way she could make peace in her mind. That's a summary and I skimmed over some details. Oh so moving! I need to read the book.

You're right, the cinematography is fantastic. I read somewhere that the war scene at the beach is a technique used only one other time in film. It was one camera, one shoot. Normally I guess it is very difficult for the actors and very expensive to create such a large set but in this movie it was fantastic.

  • I got all that, but I still didn't see it as much of a plot. Thankfully, the artiness of it all helped get me through it. : ) I'm glad you liked it, Hillary. --susie
