Topic: Bought a Flip Belgian Waffle Maker today. Fantastic!!

Additional Comments: For the past 5 years, I've been resisting buying one of those waffle makers you find at many hotel/motel breakfast buffets. Well, it wasn't hard to resist, because those (Waring) cost $80 and others had poor reviews.

Well, this week Kohls has the Oster/Sunbeam model 3874 on sale for $27.99 plus a $10 mail-in-rebate. So, I googled reviews and they sounded outstanding, so I decided I'd get one today, which was also Senior Citizen's day, so an extra 15% off. Total $14. Oh and it folds for storage!!

I've been making waffles for the last two hours and this waffle maker is as good as all the great review say. My son and granddaughter had waffles for dinner and also for dessert, with ice cream hot fudge and whipped cream. My husband did the regular waffle with blueberry syrup and I had one with butter, dusted with powdered sugar, which tasted like a very rich funnel cake.

Now I'm going to start googling some waffle recipes. Any ideas?

Over this summer I bought my first waffle maker.  I love it.  It really is easy to use and makes great waffles.  I don't know what a flip waffle maker is but I bought an Oster too.  It's compact and easy to store:  This is the one I got.  I've made blue berry, banana and chocolate chip waffles along with whole wheat and granola.    The recipes you've shared sound great, especially the toppings.  I will give them a try.

  • This is the ''flip'' http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/kitchendining/brandsforkitchen/oster/PRD~480605/Oster+Rotating+Belgian+Waffle+Maker.jsp It's the first time I've made waffles in decades. Before, I had the old fashion maker that you had to scrub while keeping the workings dry. Didn't make me appreciate waffles, lol. Now I use Pam, plastic utensils and wipe the coating clean with a paper towel. Ah, progress. Midge

Two summers ago we visited with family who were camping and were served fresh hot waffles outdoors with homemade freezer jam and whipped cream.  Now that is camping in style!  Upon returning home we headed straight to the store to purchase a flip waffle maker.  We have been feasting like kings since!  We bought a Hamilton Beach which was very reasonably priced, and our waffles are equivalent to, or better than, those we've had from the more expensive models.  And like you, what fun we've had experimenting in the kitchen, especially with toppings.

Our favourite waffles come from a recipe provided with our waffle maker and they are very simple, very quick, and the lightest and crispiest of waffles I think you will ever taste.  Mix 2 cups of baking mix (such as Bisquick or TeaBisk) with 2 Tbsp. cooking oil and 1 1/2 cups of ginger ale.  Let sit five minutes.  Pour 3/4 cup into waffle maker and bake for 6 minutes.  Absolute heaven!

Our favourite waffle toppings are also very simple.  Throw a couple of handfuls of fresh strawberries into a food processor and chop into small chunks.  Place in a bowl with sugar to taste and nuke in the microwave until hot ... perhaps a minute.  You can serve with the addition of whipped cream, but we don't find it necessary.  I also like to cook blue grapes or concorde grapes (seedless grapes do not cook down well) in a saucepan with the addition of a little sugar and a very little bit of water.  What a wonderful thick grape syrup this makes.  I do the same with fresh or frozen blueberries.  I've also done the same with berry mixtures such as blueberries and raspberries together.  What a wonderful way to eat your fruit!!

Have fun, Midge, as you dine well.

  • Sometimes I use Sprite in the pancake batter. I've never tried ginger ale. Don't you fret, fuit's coming!! I found a Bananas Foster waffle recipe today. That's for Sunday morning, as a slight comedown from the Saturday night trick or treating. Midge

  • What a simply delicious idea, Anita (and how wonderful to see you!). I am sure little Emma adores grandma's very special dessert, not to mention the rest of her family. valleydaughter would swoon over this, and shall in the near future! ...valleygirl
  • OMG... brownies... now this might be reason for me to go out and get one of these... I don't mind regular waffles either! - kris
  • That sounds wonderful. I know what's for dessert tonight!! Did you use your regular brownie recipe, a boxed mix or a special waffle/brownie recipe? Midge
  • Hello, fellow waffle makers! valleygirl, Emma loves the strawberry jam and whipped cream (funny-you and I still have similarities, huh?) Yes, kris I reach for this appliance as much as my coffee maker. I use Ghirardelli brownie mix! Yummy! All these ideas sound glorious! Anita Lyfe eom
