1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)! I liked the candy buttons (on the long paper).  There is an ice cream parlor nearby and they have old fashioned candies so when I saw the candy buttons I bought some. They didn't seem the same.
2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love? Vegetables.
3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty? Tongue!!
4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting? Aside from chocolate I love pasta in all forms and I'm sure I could eat several portions at one sitting if I let myself.
5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?

Cheesecake with Cherry Topping (I think I shared this one before) but it's so easy:

1 lb. cream cheese

1 cup sugar

1 pint sour cream

5 eggs

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat oven to 325 degrees.

Butter an 8" or 9" spring pan and sprinkle with bread crumbs - or do what I do - buy the pan!

Cream together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth.  Add eggs one at a time and beat well.  Fold in the sour cream and flavoings.

Pour into pan and bake for one hour.  Turn off oven light and leave in stove for one hour.

Remove from oven and let cool, then cover with foil or saran wrap and refrigerate.  (Allow to come to room temperature before cutting).

Put a can of cherry pie filling (not the actual can- not the filling LOL) on top.

  • Correction: I mean DO put the filling on top of the pie. Oy! MM

    Food topic - Yay!

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)?
Twinkies taste different now. ALso there were these peanut butter cups called 'Smoothies'.
No chocolate like Reeses - just peanut butter inside and out. I lived for these and can't find them now. Anyone else ever have this candy?

    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love?
    Vegetables - go figure!

    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty?
Chitterlings, otherwise known as 'chitlins'. Oh, nasty stuff, but some people adore them.

    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting?
I could never have one favorite food but I was able to narrow it down to 2.
    1. pasta dishes (lasagna, baked ziti, etc.) I'm ashamed to say how much of it I could eat.
    2. chips-n-salsa. I could eat a whole bag-o-chips with a whole jar-o-salsa if I let myself. I don't let myself, LOL!

    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?
    Here's a quickie - Rotel dip

1 can crushed tomatoes w/ jalapenos (or green chiles)
1 block of velveeta (might be the 1 lb size)
    1 lb of ground beef/turkey

Brown the meat. Add in velveeta (cut into chunks) and tomatoes, stir, and cook until hot.
Serve warm with your fave tortilla chips. So easy, quick, and good for a crowd.
This is comfort food, not high cuisine, in case the velveeta didn't give that away, LOL!!

    fun ?s, ag

  • I too hated spinach as a child, but now actually crave it. Back in the day, many families ate only canned or frozen vegetables. That bitter, stringy canned & frozen spinach bore NO RELATION to the fresh spinach we enjoy today. eom/starfish

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)?  I seem to still like all the foods I liked then.

    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love?  Spinach.  I've read that some foods taste much more strongly to the child's taste buds than to an adult's and what is why people grow up to like things they hated as a kid, such as certain vegetables.

    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty?  I know there's something but I blocked the trauma from my mind.

    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting?  Cheese.  Love it.

    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?  I've made this soup a few times now and it's always a big hit.  I've been asked for the recipe by everyone I've served it to.  It's good hot or cold and it's also low calorie.  A great summer soup!

    ASPARAGUS SOUP

    ½ onion or 6 scallions

    1 tsp oil or butter

    1 medium potato

2 cups vegetable stock or water

    1½ lbs fresh asparagus

    4 stalks celery

    1-1½ tsp salt

    1/8 tsp pepper

Sauté onion in oil or butter.  Dice potato and add along with half the stock.  Simmer until soft.  Slice asparagus & chop celery including leaves.  Add both to potatoes and onions along with remaining stock.  Cook for 10 minutes until tender.  Add salt & pepper and puree.  Add milk or water to thin or extend soup.

    Makes about 6 cups.

  • That makes a great deal of sense, that a child's taste buds are more sensitive than those of an adult. Maybe that explains the kiddies' penchant for ramen noodles, mac-n-cheese, chicken noodle soup etc. - the blander, the better! eom/starfish
  • I think it's only as to certain types of flavors (bitter is one of them, I forget the others). You notice no candy is ever too sweet for a kid or and potato chip is ever too salty! ~i&b

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)?  Believe it or not, I liked SPAM when I was a kid, but wouldn't touch it now.
    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love?  Pizza.  I hated cheese and tomatoe sauce. Now two of my favorites. We would have family night at Shakee's Pizza Parlor and my mom would have to bring a PBJ for me!
    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty? Fish
    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting? The whole turkey, mashed potatoes, green peas, cornbread dressing thing.
    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group? Sure.  Chicken Divan.  I'm making it tonight:

    • Boil chicken breasts and then tear the cooked meat in to bite size peices.
    • Slightly cook some chopped brocolli
    • Cook about 2 cups of white rice.
    • Mix together
      • 1 can Cream of Celery soup
      • 1 can cream of Mushroom soup
      • 1 cup mayo
      • 1 tbls lemon juice
      • 1 tsp curry powder
    • In a casserole dish, spread the rice, then the brocolli on top of that.  Layer the chicken throughout and spread the soup mixture on top
    • Bake for 20-25 minutes in 350.
    • Yummy!

  • With five kids and two adults spam was an economical dinner. We ate it often (lol). My brother still loves it browned in a skillet. I haven't had it since I was a kid but I wouldn't rule it out - I just never think of it.eom/WE

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)? I loved pancakes but gave them up over 30 years ago. They just became too heavy in my tummy.

    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love? Cheese. My mom liked Velveeta (blech) and I tried it...ONCE. It tasted like soap to me so I thought all cheeses would taste that way.

    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty? Raw oysters!

    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting? I love all seafood. If it's Scrod I could eat a bunch.

    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group? This is my new fruit drink I got from a magazine. It flushes you out but is soooo yummy:

In blender - 1/2 large mango (or papaya), 1 cup blueberries and 1/2 cup pineapple. I find I have to add a little bit of water (and ice to chill it) because it's VERY thick if you don't. The blueberries give it a fab color, too. Drink up!!

  • Same here re Velveeta. There was always that huge loaf front & center in the fridge, and it made an appearance in every sandwich ever made. I swear I never tasted any REAL cheeses until I was living out on my own! eom/starfish
  • Same for me. Mom never made us eat the cheese - I tried it on my own. It wasn't until, as an adult at a party, I tried Brie that I knew cheeses all had different flavors and textures and NO soap taste.eom/WE
  • I grew up in the Dairy State so cheese was an everyday food. I never tasted Velveeta until after I was out of college. I can't even consider that real cheese. I know a lot of people use it for Macaroni & Cheese but not me, I use the real deal. . ~i&b
  • Probably why I hate macaroni and cheese, too. Then again I'm a once in a while pasta eater.eom/WE

Hello to all, I hope everyone on board is doing well. Thank you Starfish for your interesting topics, I assume the Wednesday topic is yours, and that's a good thing!

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)?
I liked all sorts of candy, fundips, chocolate bars, you name it. Now, I've lost my sweet tooth!

    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love? Fish

    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty? Liver, I know it's supposed to be good for you, but gross! I also cannot stand the sight or smell of hard boiled eggs!

    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting? Pasta, I should have been Italian, I love it!

    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?
This is a nice salad recipe that is similar to one's in Spanish restaurants. My mother Amelia, born in Spain, makes the best, so I call it "Amelia's Salad". We make a version of it in our restaurant.

    AMELIA'S SALAD

    1/2 head iceberg lettuce, shredded
2 ripe tomatoes, cut in eighths
    2 stalks celery, sliced
1/2 cup Swiss cheese, cut in julienne strips
1/2 cup ham, cut in julienne strips (or turkey or shrimp)
    1/4 cup green Spanish olives,
    4 cloves garlic, minced
    1 teaspoon oregano
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup extra-virgin Spanish olive oil
    1/8 cup white wine vinegar
    2 teaspoons lemon juice
    Salt and pepper, to taste
    2 teaspoons grated Romano
In a large bowl, mix together the iceberg lettuce, cut tomatoes, celery stalks, Swiss cheese, ham, and Spanish olives.

Mix garlic, oregano, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Beat until smooth with a wire whisk. Add olive oil, gradually beating to form an emulsion. Stir in vinegar and lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Add dressing to salad and toss well. Add Romano and toss again.

*white vinegar is essential to the recipe, red wine vinegar won't be the same. The whisking of the dressing is also important.

    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting?  Broiled lobster tail with drawn butter ... but one 6-8 ounce tail at a sitting for me, thank you.

    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?

Braised Pork Chops:  I brown pork chops in my cast iron frying pan at medium high heat.  I turn the pan down to medium low and add a sliced onion, sliced red or green pepper, sliced mushrooms if I have them, a tsp. of garlic salt, a tsp. of basil, a tsp. or two of montreal smoked meat seasoning, and a cup of white wine or apple juice.  I cover the pan and simmer slowly for half to three quarters of an hour, turning frequently.  Remove the cover for the last five to ten minutes.  Serve with mashed potatoes and your choice of vegetable.

    Thanks, starfish!

Good morning all and happy Wednesday!

    1. What food did you like as a child, but it just doesn't taste the same today (or maybe they don't even MAKE it anymore!)?  LOL, I loved Vienna Sausages when I was little but I wouldn't eat one today if you paid me!  LOL
    2. What food did you dislike as a child, but have now grown to love?  I didn't like brussels sprouts or any kind of greens (like turnip greens, kale, spinach) but I love all those things now....especially brussels sprouts!
    3. What food have you tried once, but have never eaten again because it was just too nasty? Well, I really don't have anything I dislike right now except for beets....I have NEVER liked beets.......
    4. What is your #1 favorite food, and how much of it could you eat at one sitting? Oh my, I don't know if I could pick just ONE favorite food.....I suppose I would say yellow squash...I can eat it steamed, boiled, fried, grilled.....any way you can cook yellow squash I will eat it.  I would eat it at every meal if I could!  Especially fresh, right off the vine from my garden!
    5. Do you have a favorite recipe you can share with the group?  I have a recipe for squash casserole:

4-5 yellow squash, washed and sliced

    1 cup sour cream

1 can Campbell's cream of mushroom soup OR cream of chicken soup

1 vidalia onion (or yellow) chopped

1 cup Pepperidge Farm Stuffing mix (you will use 1/2 cup for mixture & 1/2 cup for topping)

1/2 cup to 1 cup shredded cheese (I use the Kraft Fiesta cheese that is a mixture of the yellow and the white cheeses - cheddar and colby/monteray jack I think)

    salt & pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients together.  Pre-heat oven to 375.  Butter a casserole dish (I use a round 2qt dish) and spread ingredients.  Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes.  Top with remaining stuffing mix and bake for additional 10 minutes.

It is very easy and also you can tweak it to your own personal taste.  I use the cream of mushroom instead of the cream of chicken because I like the mushroom flavor with the squash.  And I usually use a little more of the shredded cheese (the 1 cup).  And sometimes I put a dash or 2 of garlic salt in the mix.  I have also, on occassion, added some sliced banana peppers.  Depending on if your banana peppers are hot or not, will depend on if you use one or 2 or whatever your taste is.  I usually only use 1 regardless of the heat of the pepper.

I hope everyone has a fantabulous day!  We are having a cold front today......it was only 62 this morning when I left for work!  I thought I was going to freeze!!  LOL
