Topic: Have Any of You Guys Ever Heard of Such A Thing??

Additional Comments: This Thanksgiving I cannot make the family turkey for my brothers and sisters so my family is all arguing over it even though I have made it for past six years they can't be happy for that... anyway, I digress...my know-it-all nephew says he has made turkey before and he cooks the bird halfway THEN takes it out to stuff it and then cooks it the rest of way. I have never heard of a more idiotic thing (no offence intended if anyone actually does this)I have just never heard of such a thing. I have heard of cooking the turkey all the way then while it rests putting "dressing" in to sort of fool your guests into thinking it is stuffing and to avoid nasty salmonella, but taking it out halfway then stuffing it and putting it back? Can you say OUCH? When I stuff a turkey I have that thing in all kinds of positions shoving stuffing into it how could you possibly do it after it's been at 350degrees for hours?

Is my nephew an idiot? or is he just lying about ever making a turkey this way. I mean if this is what he wants he can do it, but it sounds strange to me and I can't figure out a reason why. It still wouldn't deter salmonella if the turkey wasn't cooked all the way. Should I buy him the "Ove-Glove"? Little joke there, but really is this done?

We don't put our stuffing into the turkey.  We never have.  My great-grandmother never did it.  She thought it was gross to put something 'up a turkey's butt'....LOL  We make 'dressing'.....which is the stuffing but baked in a pan in the oven.  It is so simple - we take Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix and add onions and celery and some salt, pepper and a little dash of garlic and mix with the juice from the turkey (add enough to make it to the consistency you like...I like mine not so mushy so that when it bakes in the oven, you can cut it into cute little squares!).......that is how we do it here......

Hey Isis, I'm no Martha Stewart (although I do use her turkey recipe) but I've never heard of such a thing either. If I were you I might bring a doggy bag TO dinner just to be safe LOL!

I have never heard of this.

The last couple of years I did suggest to my mom to make the Turkey a day or two ahead of the holiday.  This way, when it's cooked, and cooled she can slice it and lay it in the pan ready to warm up on the Big Day.  Less work and mess for her on Thanksgiving and she loved the idea and has been doing it since then.  My mom has never ever stuffed her bird.  She feels it's safer to cook the stuffing separately.

  • izi, it is absolutely safer, but no real tremendous harm is going to come to us if the bird is cooked to temp. For many years my mother used to stuff turkey the night before then put in fridge and cook next morning. Please keep in mind my mother is 84, this is how she was raised. It wasn't until I started cooking thanksgiving dinner for her that we stopped that old school way. I said it was safer to stuff morning of, so that's what I have done for past 6 or 7 years, No one in my family ever got sent to hospital from food poisoning even when she would stuff turkey night before. I know it sounds so gross now, but as we live longer we learn more. She didn't know any better. But to be absoluutely totally safe you should not stuff bird and also spray it with Lysol before serving. LOL. Just a joke. not at your expense. I know what you are saying. ///Isis

I make the dressing separately so I don't put it inside the turkey. I don't think that it's a healthy way to do it to put it inside the turkey. I cook the turkey and dressing as two separate dishes.

  • I know exactly what your saying Holly, but man, a tiny bit of salmonella is small price for me. I love the ''stuffing'' as opposed to ''dressing'' I do totally understand your point though. It's just a matter of preference. ///Isis

Doesn't the turkey take long enough to cook as it is?

  • Uh, YEAH, Shea! That's anopther point you bring up. Wouldn't the stuffing still be cold and only halfway cooked after the turkey was done? None of it makes any sense. I will tell you why. cause My nephew is full of BS. He never did this.No one in their right mind ever has. It doesn't make sense. LOL. They are just mad cause I'm not making the bird this year so everyone has to prove they know some better way. My family is mess right now since dad died in June and mom can't think due to dementia. What a tub of shiznit these holidays are going to be. Do we really need brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews???? Whew! That felt good to get off my chest. thanks! LOL. ////Isis

Maybe he thinks it's a way of keeping the stuffing from drying out in the oven.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • No, cause we are still talking about a STUFFED turkey as opposed to making the stuffing seperately in which case I would call it ''dressing'' know what I mean? ///Isis

Gotta say I agree with you. I've never heard of anyone cooking a turkey this way. Plus it's a total nuisance and giving himself more work (as the turkey is HOT). Maybe someone will come along and explain the sense of this but right now it makes NO sense.

  • Exactly my point, WE who wants to stuff a HOT turkey?? That is just stupid IMHO ///Isis
