Additional Comments: If you’re frustrated by poor service at a restaurant, think twice before you decide to not tip. You may be in for a bit more than just a dirty look from the waiter.
"Nobody, nobody wants to be forced to pay a tip or be arrested for terrible service," Leslie Pope said when her happy hour ended in handcuffs.
Leslie Pope and John Wagner were hauled away by police and charged with theft for not paying the mandatory 18 percent gratuity totaling $16 after eating at the Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem, Pa. with six friends.
Pope claimed that they had to wait nearly an hour for their order and that she had to get napkins and silverware for the table herself.

What ingy said. Those customers chose to eat in a place where they would be charged a gratuity whether they liked the service or not. If you don't want to pay an automatic gratuity, eat somewhere else.

Message: A tip and a gratuity are not the same thing. A tip is entirely voluntary, a gratuity is a fee that is part of the bill. The couple was not arrested because they didn't tip -- they were arrested for not paying part of their bill (and probably for acting like jackasses). You have to wonder what kind of scene those customers caused to have the restaurant call the police and for the police to then drag them out in handcuffs. I hate bad service as much as the next person but it's no excuse for getting yourself arrested.
