Topic: Does anyone think they make adjustments in the script to accomodate a recast?

My reason for asking......In watching nu-Lily yesterday, I was mentally visualizing M.B.in the same role with the exact same lines and I just couldnt do it. It was kind of a "She wouldnt have said that, she wouldnt have done that" type moment for me. Martha's look, mannerisms, etc. just would not have flowed right with yesterdays script and neither would the big issue with the girls of "what dress should I wear tonight" have worked with M.B.

It's well-known that re-casts often allow the writers ''to take the character in a new direction'' - they play to the strengths of the new thespian - just as actors interpret the same stage work differently or add a different nuance to a longstanding title role. (Look how many ladies have played Hello Dolly differently.) It's also more than likely that they'll test different *chemistries* Ms. Beck might have with other actors and actresses, for romances/rivalries.

A good example of this is when Sandra Nelson took over the role of Phyllis Summers when Michelle Stafford left Y&R. Bill Bell had her play Phyllis a little darker, more desperate - and this worked for the custody trial that was unfolding. To this day, viewers still rave what great work Sandra did outside the courtroom the day she lost her son, Daniel. But can you imagine her paired with Joshua Morrow's Nick? I can't.

SANDYB:  This is so funny, because yesterday, I thought that it was odd for Lily to blurt out, "You don't want to make love to me?" the way she did.  It just seemed like oldLily would have skirted around it more and not just came out with it, which I found refreshing!  I've often heard about writers writing "to" certain actors and such, so I'd say your feeling is accurate.  Now, if they could just write a nice, permanent GOODBYE SCENE for Liberty, Jumpin' Julie or whatever the hell the mother's name is, Ameera, and Sofie, I'd be in seventh heaven!!

I do think that the whole 'what am I going to wear' scene would have come off much differently if MB had done it.  There would have been more of an underlying, frumpy, poor self-image undercurrent to it.  Noelle Beck is also a mother, IRL, but I think that TPTB see her more potentially glamorous (sp) than they saw MB.

Sometimes lines are altered, but it has more to do w/the way the actress is directed in a scene & how they play it.  Remember, these scripts are written weeks in advance of taping & that happens weeks prior to the airdate.
