Additional Comments: I've been meaning to ask about this for a long time, but just haven't ever gotten around to it.  My sweet mother had given me a big box of recipes that she had cut out of newspapers and magazines over the years.  What would be a good way to organize them?  I've thought about typing them and saving to my computer, but that might take .... forever.  Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm thinking that I'll just go through the box and find the ones that I think I might like to try some time or another and then maybe scan the others.  These aren't family recipes - just some that my mother had cut out.  I do love the idea of making a scrap book type cookbook.

I have my grandmother's recipe box.  I looked through them and made a mental note of recipes I wanted to try.  I try to make them  before I save them. If it's a bum recipe, why take up space?  All the magazine recipes I put in one of those photo albums with the clear plastic that goes over each page.  If there's a recipe on only one side of a recipe card, I put that in, too. If it's on both sides of the recipe card, I recopy side two and place both cards side by side in the photo album.

I pull recipes out if I think they're not "worthy" (LOL!) unless, of course, they are written in my grandmother's hand and then I save them just to remember her a little better.

Are these recipes that your mother used often? Or are they just recipes that she cut out of newspapers and magazines thinking they looked good? The reason I ask is that both I and my husband cut out recipes all the time and I have several manilla envelopes full of them. If that is the case with your mom, the sentimental value is not all that great. However if there are ones you know she used and liked, then you could paste them onto recipe cards and laminate them and keep them in a recipe box.

Do you have a scanner?  If so, you could scan them and still save them to your computer.

Since I love to scrapbook, if it were me, I'd combine pictures of my mom, pictures of family dinners, pictures of old dishes, etc. with the recipies and make a family heriloom out of it.

  • If I had the talent for scrapbooking, that is a great idea! And an excellent wedding gift.
