As the 45th Anniversary of AW approaches I thought I would put pen to paper, or fingers to keys, and share my ideas for what mayhave been happening in Bay City over the last ten years, or most of it...
June 1999 to February 2009:
Jake and Vicky made it home safely from their stay in Oakdale and settled back into life in Bay City with Kirk, Steven, and the twins. Soon after their return Cindy came back to town with a secret business partner. With revenues falling Jake had to sell a large chunk of his Herald stock. Cindy ended up buying a huge chunk of the Herald and getting a seat on the board. She also bought Tops after it went belly up and reopened it. A suspicious Vicky and Paulina began following Cindy and discovered the Grant was alive in Tanquir and funding Cindy’s new business ventures! Grant was extradited back to Bay City and put on trial, but he was able to convince the court that he had suffered from amnesia and wondered away. In reality, all new that he faked his death. Cindy thought that Grant loved her again, but it was revealed that he had hooked up with a new lover in Tanquir; Cecile!!! Cecile returned to Bay City too and she and Grant became a terrible two-some, finally forcing Jake out of the Herald, using it as their base to start building their own media empire, one to rival Cory Publishing. Cindy, heartbroken, tried to kill herself, but was saved by Russ Matthews, who had just returned to town. Russ took to Cindy and they later became lovers. However, Russ was already in a relationship with Felicia! A triangle between Cindy, Russ, and Felicia began. With Grant in town, the animosity between he and Vicky resumed. She kept an eagle eye on him and finally discovered that he had a huge secret that he planned on “selling” to Carl in order to gain a seat on the Cory Publishing board. This secret had something to do with Ryan and with that Vicky brought Spencer back to town to try to pry the secret out of Grant. Finally, it was revealed that Justine had not had just Ryan by Carl, but triplets!! She had handpicked Ryan to raise as a Harrison, and handpicked homes for the other two boys. Vicky secretly taped Grant spilling his guts to Spencer and showed it to Carl before Grant could do so. This set in play an adventurous story to find the missing brothers of Ryan. Vicky, Jake, Carl. Rachel, Spencer, Grant, and Cecile went on an around the world venture, with Grant and Cecile trying to find the brothers before Carl. Finally, the brothers were found in Hong Kong and Sydney. Trent lived in Hong Kong and Grey lived in Australia. Both looked exactly like Ryan. * Paul Michael Valley returned to play the dual role. Once back in Bay City, Carl tried to get to know his boys, and he and Grey, a reporter, became close and he reminded all of Ryan in his actions and demeanor. Trent turned out to be more like Grant and ended up becoming close to his older brother and scheming with him to get stock and money out of Carl. Trent also tried to come between Jake and Vicky and almost seduced Vicky one night while pretending to be Grey, who had become close to Vicky too. Vicky was torn as she really was attracted and drawn to Grey. Meanwhile, Trent and Cecile slept together and plotted against Grant. Carl, disgusted by Trent’s behavior, set him up in a scam business deal and Trent left town. Jake and Vicky split up temporarily when she could not seem to get over her attraction to Grey. Grey, attracted and in love with Vicky, finally told her to go back to Jake, as he realized that she was not in love with him, but with the memory of Ryan. Jake forgave Vicky and they resumed their marriage. Steven began behaving strangely and staying out late, acting mysterious. Vicky thought he was hiding a girlfriend or maybe was in trouble. She followed him one night and discovered that he was going to the Cory cabin and meeting someone staying there. Soon, she discovered that the man was none other than Steve Frame!!! Steve had not died years ago in the cave in, but instead had went into witness protection! He finally could not stand it anymore and came back home, secretly staying at the Cory cabin. One day Steven had drove up to get some papers that Rachel had left in the desk and ran into his grandfather! For weeks Steven had been helping his grandfather stay incognito! In the meantime the Matthews family came back in full force with Pat coming home after running Euro-Brava for years to start up a new magazine for middle –aged women. Liz returned and got right back to being the busy body of Bay City. When she ran across Etta Mae it became obvious they did not like each other and it was revealed that Liz’s brother-in-law, the sainted Jim Matthews, had an on-going affair with Etta Mae after his wife, Mary died. Etta Mae had worked at a café Jim frequented . Liz had discovered this way back then and secretly threatened Etta Mae and scared her into calling it off with Jim. The real kicker was that Jim had fathered both Toni AND Tyrone and never known it! Etta Mae had raised Toni as a Burrell but, her husband had left her by the time Tyrone was conceived, so she went to Alabama to supposedly care for a sick aunt and left the kids with her sister. She had Tyrone and the Montgomery’s raised him. By chance the secret was revealed and Russ, Pat,& Josie insisted that Toni and Tyrone take their places as Matthews. Liz was furious and many dramatic scenes resulted as she and the new Matthews off-spring clashed. Finally, when Alice came home due to the dramas, it was revealed that Liz had known about Toni and Tyrone all along and also kept he secret. While Russ, Pat, and Alice were furious with Liz, Toni and Ty were furious with Etta Mae. Through this, both women found solace in each other, and shockingly, became friends. After this drama passed, Steve Frame returned to town and Alice and he and Alice rekindled their love affair. Pat fell for the recently divorced from Amanda Cory, Cameron Sinclair. Although she was older than him, they fell madly in love. Russ stirred the Matthews pot with his triangle with Felicia and Cindy, especially when Cindy made it appear that Felicia had fallen off the wagon and then convinced Russ to marry her. Alice and Steve’s love affair was interrupted briefly when she grew jealous of his friendship with Rachel. Rachel convinced Alice that she loved Carl, and now in the prime of their lives, with Steve back, they were truly just best friends. With Carl’s help, Alice believed it and they planned to marry. However, Alice was diagnosed with breast cancer and cancelled the wedding. She left town secretly and ran off for treatment, swearing Liz ,Rachel, and Pat to secrecy. Rachel spilled the beans and Steve tracked Alice down and convinced her to come home with him. After she was felling better, the had a lavish wedding and settled into a great life. Steve rebuilt his business empire and suddenly he and Grant were clashing over business deals. Loretta was brought to town to live with Rachel and Carl and she and Liz became good “frenemies” often fighting, but offering support to each other and the younger set. Rachel and Carl ran Cory side by side with Amanda. Russ divorced Cindy after her schemes were revealed and he married Felicia. Matthew and Donna hooked back up and remarried. They became business partners again at KBAY. Amanda’s career ultimately destroyed her marriage to Cameron. Ally set a plan into motion to make Amanda happy and set into motion a series of hilarious events that threw Amanda and Sam together constantly. Finally, they gave in and ended up remarried and Sam was back at work at Brava as the art director. Jamie returned to town and ended up having an affair with Blaine, who was back in town temporarily with Sandy, who had moved them back to Bay City in order to help with an expansion at Cory. Cecile discovered the affair, and in an attempt to win back Sandy, told him about the affair. Jamie and Sandy fought and Sandy fell, hitting his head, causing permanent and total hearing loss. Sandy told Jamie he would never forgive him. A devastated Blaine vowed to take care of Sandy and they headed back to California. A guilt-ridden Jamie fell into a deep depression and a returned to town Lorna helped him get back to himself and they fell in love. Blaine, Sandy, Jamie, and Rachel vowed revenge on Cecile. Iris came home in 2002 with a bitterness that made her old machination seem tame. Her anger over being tossed in prison after being set up Carl’s shooting in 1994 and for years abandoned by the family, left her hungry for vengeance. After many failed attempts at revenge it all came to a head one night at the mansion when Iris had a complete mental breakdown and rushed out of the house and jumped into her car. She careened down the Cory driveway and then hit a car head on as it came up the drive. When the family rushed outside, Jamie went to the other car and began screaming “DENNIS!! NO!!!” Iris had accidentally killed her own son. Dennis had been coming to see iris, as Rachel had called him and told him that his mother was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Iris was cleared of any charges due to her mental state and ended up in a mental hospital. There, she and Rachel made peace and Rachel helped her to make peace with the accident, their past, and Mac’s death, but not before Iris attempted suicide. After a trip abroad, Iris returned went back to work at the magazine she founded, Sophisticate, and began dating Spencer once again. About this time Olivia Matthews popped up again in town with Sarah, Dennis’s daughter she had ran away with, now 12. Soon it became obvious that Olivia was doing drugs, in fact she was addicted to crystal meth and had tried to sell her daughter for drug money! The Matthews and Iris sprang into action to help, but not before Olivia was found dead from an overdose. A devastated Russ wanted Sarah to live with he and Felicia, but Iris wanted custody as well. A terrible custody battle ensued and friendships were strained and torn apart. Rachel chose to support Iris in the case and her longstanding relationship with the Matthews, and her dear friendship with Felicia were strained to the breaking point. Eventually, all worked out a custody situation that Sarah herself came up with and she spent most of her time with Iris. Cass and Lila enjoyed a long period of peace and happiness, but when she secretly teamed up with Grant and Cecile in a business deal, that peace ended. Anne, the Frankie look-a-like came back to won about this time, and she and Cass grew close, but Lila would not stand for it and cleaned up her act. Anne left town again with a broken heart. Lila ended up becoming pals with Paulina and became Paulina’s assistant in her growing catering business. Paulina, with the help of Cory Publishing, became a famous cookbook author and finally, a host of her own cooking show. Joe became chief of police and Remy and Nick married and moved to Europe where she worked as a reporter for Brava and he as a photographer. Dante, now a teen, shocked his parents by coming out of the closet. Joe refused to accept his son being gay, and Paulina supported her son. She and Joe’s marriage suffered for it. John and Sharlene returned to town and he became chief of Staff at BCGH and she headed up the new foods division at Cory, working closely with Paulina. In a twist, Dante fell in love with Gregory, who also told his parents that he was gay. John and Sharlene took the news well, and the two boys began dating. Jasmine, with a huge crush on Gregory, and convinced she make him straight made their lives, and Charlie’s too, by continually trying to break them up. After many trying events and years, Joe finally came to terms with his son’s sexuality when a teen that he met at the station killed himself due to being disowned by his family. Greg and Dante are now planning a wedding ceremony. Jasmine convinced Greg that he needed to sleep with a girl to “be sure” and then set it up for Dante to find them. The guys broke up for a time and then Jasmine found she was pregnant. Charlie found out that Jas was really pregnant by Kirk! Jasmine went to have an abortion and Pat ended up counseling her. Kirk and Jasmine ran off later and married much to their parents’ dismay and then had to deal with being teen parents. Ally fell for a hot new doctor, who turned out to be Cory Ewing, named after her grandfather by Clarice. Charlie’s heart is giving out just as she and Steven found love with one another. Carl’s past came back to haunt the family when an old enemy, Findley, kidnapped Rachel and Iris. Eventually, Carl, Matt, Jake and the cops were able to rescue them. Meanwhile, due to the economic problems Amanda was forced to dismantle Sophisticate. Iris came home to find her magazine gone. Instead of getting mad, she handled it well, understood and moved to London to head up Euro-Brava, and being close to Sarah, who is in school there. After the kidnapping Rachel began having nightmares about Carl’s past and pulling away from him. Jamie proposed to Lorna. Marley and Tyrone adopted Chinese babies. Marley went back to school and became a school teacher. Donna began being stalked and receiving terrifying gifts. Eventually it was revealed that the stalker was Mikey, the child she had Michael had adopted over 20 years and who was taken away due to her affair with Jake! Mikey had had a terrible childhood after being returned to his parents, who lost him again, and he grew up in foster care. Matt did not trust him, but a guilt-ridden Donna invited him to live with them. Jake found out he had testicular cancer. A strange message arrives for Rachel….a letter postmarked May of 1989….from MAC!
