I do.
SIMILAR, i mean. ... NOT the XACT sane of course. But, cut from the same cloth? - I Think so.
I love both characters, even though katieho makes it so easy to pile on her lol...
I love both actresses too.
One difference I DO think though is:
Sometimes it seems like Lauren Koslow is attempting to take the absurd character of kate seriously and play her ''straight.''
It looks like Louise Sorrel jusr cuts it loose and dives right into the ludicrous silliness that IS Vivian Alamain...

Like INforester, I am looking forward to Kate and Vivian confronting one another.
My favorite DOOL scene of all time is of Kate chopping off fish heads with a big knife, on that boat she ended up on, all thanks to Vivian.
Kate pretended to be so elegant and refined (and still does), the fish-head job was absolute torture for her, and a perfect comeuppance at the time. The elegance is a complete act, and she knows it, and Viv knows it, which is what Kate can't stand.

I love Vivian, always have always will. She is brilliant. She has such a presence when she walks into a room.
Kate to me was a poor man's Vivian, a want to be. Kate is just plain dumb. None of her plans follow thru. She does her own dirty work, instead of hiring someone.
I always assumed they kept Kate around only due to Vivian was gone. I hope Vivian can bring Kate down once and for all.
Way back when I first started watching in the mid90s, there was more of a distinct difference between Kate and Vivian. Vivian came from a wealthy family and Kate had come from a lower income family with an abusive husband. Kate also seemed to be of better character back in the early days while Vivian was the obvious crazy one.
After Vivian left Kate took on more of a conniving and manipulative role, pretty much to help fill the vacuum Vivan left.
Today they are much more similar than they were 15 years ago. However, like you said PT, Kate doesn't seem nearly as nutsy as Vivian is.
I hope that these two meet up and start quarreling again. It was good for a laugh and only Vivian could properly put Kate in her place.
Speaking of Kate, did anyone catch the snobby remark Kate made about Mary. She referred to her as "that woman who really needs to realize she's not a part of this family".
