Topic: HELP! I am NOT a bug person! What is this?

Additional Comments:

So we are all moved into our "new" house.  Last night in the bathroom on the upper level I found an insect on the ceiling.  It was about an inch long and had legs all the way around it.  My son says mom it's a centipede, I think he may be right.  But do they move so fast?  This nasty creature that has invaded my home moved like a cockroach!  I'm still shuddering at the mere thought of having that insect in there.  Why is it that one small insect can put you on the defense in your own home?  LOL.

Ang.

Pfffft. That's nuttin'.

I found a HUGE SUN SPIDER in our living room. They're a cross between a spider and a scorpion. I killed it and left the carcass for hubby to dispose of...and every time I walked by, I checked to make sure it was still dead.

Horrible things.

Hey, be thankful it's not these:

Thanks to a boxelder tree in our backyard, we always have infestations of boxelder bugs.  An exterminator told us that the only way to kill them is a mixture of soap and water. They nest in our siding and when I spray up in the cracks, hordes of bugs come falling out! They also like to get into our house---and they FLY!

I'm pretty sure you've got a silverfish. I find them in my bathroom too occasionally. They move fast, and that's what startles you. I'll trade you one silverfish for hundreds of boxelder bugs anytime!

  • Yes boxelder are hard to get rid of! We did have a centipede. I realize this after I looked up images on the web........ewwww. eom Ang.
  • We had tons of these in our yard.//Anne
  • Yep, we have a ton of these here in Oklahoma too. I haven't seen any in quite a while; they tend to come indoors during the winter months looking for a warm place. My useless cats won't eat them, either!~Carissa

Okay, I wanna know where you've been living that you would never have seen a centipede before now! Cuz I wanna live there! lol  We get centipedes all the time, and I HATE them! They move at lightening speed.  Just dealt with one last night but he got away (he was smaller like yours).  I especially hate the HUGE ones, long as my finger. Ewwwwwwwwwww. *shudder*

  • I couldn't believe how long they can get! Thankfully this one was small! eom Ang.
  • I have never heard of these silverfish that people are referring to so I had to look it up. It seems to me that silverfish are smaller and lighter in color, whereas centipedes are brown, sometimes with traces of darker brown or black, and their legs are a lot longer. And they can be pretty ginormous. Ewwwwwww I hate that I'm even talking about this! (pickles)

Ok I don't think it's a silverfish, thank GOD!  But I do believe it may have been a centipede.  I should listen to my 9 yr old more often, lol.

It could be a silverfish.  Did it look like this?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • That would be my guess too....you find them most often in the bathrooms (I think because of the dampness????) and they don't like light, so they move pretty fast trying to find cover when you flick the light on! I don't like them either, but it helps to know that you will rarely find them in the bedroom! :o) eom Tukey
  • OMG. I think so! All I know is that it had TONS of legs and moved really fast! Is that a centipede or a nasty fish? I'll have to look up info on both *shudder* . Thanks, ang.
