Topic: After talking to my doctor: A rant and a recipe :(((

Additional Comments: Guys, I had myself a good cry this morning. After talking to my doctor she said I need to stay in the house until every symptom of the H1N1 is gone. Okay, that is fine, I don't want to make anyone sick.
However, I am going on day 10 with this and my fever came back today. I have every symptom under the sun still. My cough is horrible. She was going to prescribe me a cough medicine, but they all contain ingredients I am allergic to. :( Then, for the past two nights my breathing was so bad I almost went to the ER. Finally hubby realized the robitussin (SP?) he was giving me had High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. Another thing I am severely allergic to. I ran out of epipens so last night hubby had to race to the store to get benedryl (SP?) which sort of helps. What dumb *** would put HFCS in medicine????
So, the good news is that I can do some work from home today so I don't have to use my sick days up, but staying in for 3 weeks is getting really old peeps.. I know, I know, I could be dead, but I am feeling really sad... I don't do sick well, never have.... Thanks for listening... I didn't post this on FB or my MIL will worry about me instead of enjoy her trip to New York....
Roasted Garlic and New Potatoes
20 small to medium new potatoes 5 to 7 whole heads of garlic 1/3 to 1/2 cup olive oil
1/3 to 1/2 cup dry white wine
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper Directions:

Quarter new potatoes and set on a large rimmed baking sheet. Lop off the very top of each garlic head and arrange throughout the potatoes. Drizzle olive oil over the tops of the garlic and all over potatoes; do the same with the wine. Generously salt and pepper potatoes and garlic. Toss potatoes to coat. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 375 for 45 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for 20 to 30 minutes until nice and golden.

Lisa, I hope you are feeling better soon.  I LOVE to roast potatoes or combinations of veggies in oil & sea salt, but have never used wine.  I will have to try this.  Take care & hang in there.

Oil of Oregano (the liquid in a bottle is more potent than the capsules) -- good for the immune system and will help ward off viral infections and has been known to stop coughs as well.  hth.

Lisa, I haven't had time to post much lately but wanted to pop in to tell you I'm so sorry you are sick!  Bless your heart!  Thankfully I haven't had flu in years but I can't take OTC medicines either.  The times I did have a bad cough and couldn't sleep I got some children's cough medicine from my health food store and had no side effects from it.  I also wonder if you have a deep lung cough why your dr. can't prescribe something without the ingredients you are allergic to.  If nothing else, try a hot toddy before going to bed, a shot of liquor, hot water, lemon & honey.  And eat some comfort foods, and what gives you strength. I wish I could bring you some hot soup or a pot pie!

i haven't heard any vomiting w/H1N1. when my son got sick and threw up it was from the spike in fever from the bad ear infection and i believe, the taco bell his father fed him!

but he did lose 20 lbs. this whole month starting from the 1st illness of tonsillitis. you have to force yourself to eat!!

and LOVE your recipe. i actually chop up a bunch of cloves of garlic and spread it over the potatoes with the olive oil then sprinkle parsley. ooo red potatoes are good too!

eat more garlic for your immune system!!

  • Yeah, I haven't heard of anyone throwing up with this either. I am eating, just not a lot. Lisa P

If you have H1N1 did you doctor prescribe you Tamiflu? Did you tell your doctor that your fever has returned? I don't ask this to alarm you but return of fever and pulmonary/breathing problems associated with this type of flu is very serious. I urge you to seek medical attention if your breathing is labored.....t

  • I saw my doctor last week. Most of my breathing problems were associated with that HFCS being in my medicine. Now that we have that figured out I am doing better. She said this flu relapses easy and as long as my fever was low (which it is) she did not want me to leave the house. Lisa P

I just came in here to empathize with you.  I've been sick for over a week, worst flu ever. I may have the swine flu, who knows? Since I have no insurance, I finally broke down and went to the clinic for antibiotics and some wonderful Ibuprofen.  For days, I've been so feverish, it was terrible. Couldn't even sleep, even though I was weak and tired. Then the sore throat that about killed me. Then once that faded, the coughing, coughing, coughing. When will it end! OMG!  I'm finally feeling like it's on the way out, but I have absolutely NO energy whatsoever! When you are sick, you can't remember what it was like to feel healthy. Was I always this lazy? LOL Get well soon!

(since that was a rant, here is my recipe for chicken noodle soup that I've learned this past week.  Get Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup, and pull off the lid. Pour in big bowl. Cover lightly with plastic wrap. Nuke for 3 minutes. Eat. The end.)

  • Pickles, you just CRACKED me up. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, the sorethroat is TERRIBLE! No energy, and all of the above. I know have the piggy flu. I never get sick and I have never been this sick since I had the mumps when I was little. Thanks for your recipe. It sound hard, but I may manage :-) Lisa P

Sorry, Lisa. OK, now I have a question for you. I was just listening to Dr. Dean Edell and he said that there is no such thing as the stomach flu. However, the H1N1 CAN, in some people cause nausea and vomiting in SOME(I stress some) people. Did you get sick to your tummy?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Not at all. With the H1N1 my doctor said you will lose your appetite, but you may not get sick to your tummy. I have not at all, but I have all of the other symptoms. Lisa P
  • Oh good. Nothing more miserable!! Kat

I'll trade you my vomitting and nausea for your fever and cough.  I threw up Sunday out of the blue and have been nauseous constantly since.  I have no appetite and have been surviving on the meds my doc gave me for acid in my stomach (from stress) and Pepto Bismol and Gravol at night.  I had to go to the doc on Monday to sign my papers so I could go back to work yesterday.  He said I'm still stressed and depressed, but yet I feel okay!   (The nausea feels the same as four weeks ago during the first week *after*....so it's confusing to go three weeks feeling better and then have a relapse?!?!?)  I was okay going back to work.  It's so frustrating and annoying to feel so nauseous when I want to be here!  He said that your body does funny things.  And NO, I'm NOT pregnant.  That would be one helluva joke, eh?

    Recipe:

Take Pepto Bismol out of fridge.  Shake up.  Take two shooters of the pink stuff.  Works fast, but doesn't last long! lol

Lisa, unfortunately, it's not uncommon for H1N1 symptoms to recede and then come back.  I know it sucks, but hang in there.  Just think of this as your chance to relax and take a break from all the running around.  Take a nice bubble bath and give yourself a pedicure!

  • I have done a lot of that stuff. I was going to email you and tell you I have done the facial thing for 3 weeks now since we talked about it and I must say my face at least looks good. Lisa P
