Topic: My best friend from home lost everything in the tornado's on Saturday.

Additional Comments: Obviously, pray for everyone in the terrible ordeal. My home town is about 3 miles north of Picher,Oklahoma (in Kansas). My best friend just built a beautiful home on the outskirts of Picher and all that's left is a slab. Thankfully, she works evenings (she's a health care worker) and her husband is a paramedic and he was also on call, which meant their kids were not at home. They did lose their dog, and all of their possessions, but these things are all replaceable. Many lost more than that. My cousin's pool had all the water sucked out of it, which is just so weird....
Pray for everyone, but also remember my friend Traci.
I'm also singing praises that it missed my hometown, et. al.

Its the most frightening feeling to stand there and see what once was. I recall that vividly after the fire. Staring at ashes that were once my beloved things. Thank God no one was hurt and tell your friend, things CAN be replaced, definately. But she must be prepared to grieve - believe it or not. You feel displaced. You feel as if you are alone, standing naked with nothing. No roots. I think I was the most frightened right after the fire when I felt alone on earth. I had my family, true, and was staying at mom and dads, but you have so little of anything. I remember my dear friends who are no longer my friends bought me some stuff to draw. Paper, pencils, etc. Because I used to be so into art. All my drawings burned up and I never drew again.

  • I know what you mean Kat. I had a house that burned, and we actually stayed with my friend Traci and her family (we were like 7th grade then) at that time and she and I cried as we went through my things.....It's just total shock...... I'm sorry you never drew again!!! AngD

I'm so sorry to hear that AngD.   I'm glad it missed your home too, and thankful as well that none of your friends family was injured or lost. I'm sure the loss of the family pet is pretty hard to take though-especially for the children.

Those storms were just horrible. We had them all around us but only did property damage in my area, thank God. But I feel so badly for the folks who lived in the places where the twisters did touch down. One of our schools had it's roof torn off and another had windows blown off and there were a few homes that sustained damage but no injuries in my area. My heart goes out to all the people who lost their lives, homes, friends/neighbors. Picher really got hit hard.

OMG, that's horrible!!  Glad they are OK, so sad about their home and their pet :-(    That will take a lot of mental rebuilding.  I will say a prayer for them.

That has got to be devastating...especially losing their dog. I'm a California gal and I'll take an earthquake over a tornado anyday.

I didn't know that's where you lived, AngD.

That tornado really surprised me.  It wasn't stormy at all in central Oklahoma that day.

I didn't think anyone still lived in Picher.  It's in the middle of the Tar Creek Superfund cleanup site, and all the residents were given money to relocate due to the piles of chat from lead strip mining in the area.

There's no way I would live near that town!  But it's too bad that the people that do still live there had such extensive damage.  Evidently this tornado hit without warning and it wasn't stormy in that area at the time, either.  I've been to Miami to do a hospital inspection and it's a pretty nice little place.

Poor doggie.  I'm so sorry for their loss and of all their stuff as well.  Hopefully they had insurance for the material things.

  • You know, driving through there, you wouldn't think people lived there either. It was already a shanty town (though my friend just built a gorgeous house on the outskirts). I'm actually 'from' Columbus, KS - though I live in Texas now. When they said it got about a 20 block area of Picher, my son (we drive through Picher on every visit to Kansas) said ''I didn't know there were 20 blocks actually IN Picher'' - small town, and very poor. Now it's got to be completely desolate. AngD
  • All but around 200 homes were vacant; either moved elsewhere or 'sold' to the government under the buyout deal. Those left were mostly older people that didn't want their town to totally disappear. But I think it has now, no matter what. ~Carissa
  • I think you are right Carissa. I watched a very teary eyed elderly woman being interviewed and she said that when they had offered her money to leave, she said she was NEVER leaving her home....but she guesses God has other plans. I'm just hoping that any lead particles that were stirred up have not lingered in the air. Those chat piles always scared me. So many people would dirt bike and dune buggy on them and sometimes they would get sucked under......scary enuff! But the lead they contained.....shivers.....AngD

    That is terrible.

But I respectfully must add that a  pet dog is NOT "replaceable."

  • I don't think that's what Ang meant. I believe she was referring to the possessions lost, not the dog. ~i&b
  • Definitely not what I meant, but it's okay to mention. There are also people who lost their lives so my friend was lucky. Very upset about the family pet though! AngD
