Topic: What the new jerk Doctor thinks is wrong with Spinelli

Additional Comments: I thought that was interesting, because the doc (haven't caught his name yet) is saying that Spinelli has Asperger's syndrome or disorder, which is what the actor who plays Spinelli has always seemed to be showing, which is why I was never certain if the writers meant him to be like that or only took advantage of what they saw in him. Spinelli should be much more confident around children, because he doesn't get on well with his own peers and adults find him either charming or unbearable.  It would be good to see Spinelli taking charge of one or more of the children in the story.  He should be good at drawing them out.  It would make a nice break from Carly and Robin, who, together, can make me wish there were no children on the show at all.

They are already making the new doc a hypocrit.  He is SO full of himself, as a surgeon, that he can't be bothered w/working w/a variety of patients in the free clinic?  But he CAN go out of his way to diagnose Spinelli w/something that surgery would never cure.  BTW, what was he doing treating Spinelli anyway?  I thought he was a surgeon, not a GP or Internist.  None of this is making any sense.

I think it's cool that they are actually having someone on the show wanting to get into the psyche that is Spinelli. I have to admit, the writers have done an excellent job with this particular character's personality. The writing for him is always spot on and amazing. Kudos to Bradford Anderson who really is fantastic at making this character work. He delivers the dialogue masterfully and with perfection.

He doesn't appear to have Asbergers. He feels too much. He does get over-rattled at times, but not quite in that way. I think he is one of those kids who played Dungeons and Dragons too much, joined the Society for Creative Anacronism, and became adept at talking in story context, and lives in his own head too much. He has to name everything to put it in his head properly. Not everyone with a high IQ is socially smart--in fact, many really smart people are unable to interact easily with others in social situations.
To cure him would be a shame. His are about the only 'light' moments on the show.

  • But people w/Aspergers (sp) are usually high functioning & don't always get 'rattled' or have meltdowns. It is one of the reasons that it often doesn't get diagnosed. For many yrs people lived w/it when there was no diagnosis or name for it. They can hold down jobs, go to school, etc. without the problems associated w/other forms of autism on the spectrum. eom
  • People wiht Aspergers have lots of emotion.

I had to look up Asperger's syndrome to be more clear on what it is exactly.  It seems it is quite a controversial diagnosis and management/treatment is equally as controversial.  Did the doctor really use those words?  I missed that.  I did hear him say he recommends Spinelli take a test called an MBTI and I have no idea what that is at all.

  • I watched the tape & didn't hear him say any specific diagnosis, only that he would have to do further testing to confirm his 'hunch'. eom

This could be an amazing storyline if they go in this direction!
