What kind of mobster was/is he?  Since it appears he's smuggling and/or selling drugs, which nefarious deeds does he money come from?  Extortion, prostitution, smuggling other kinds of stuff (not drugs)???  He and Jason are alway yammering on about protecting their territory.  I don't get it.

It probably won't happen, but I wish this Russian mob guy would smash Sonny like a bug (or at least make his life even more miserable).

Coffee!  It's all about coffee.  Sonny and Jason are coffee importers.  They know their beans!

Sonny is an old fashioned extortionist. He 'owns' the docks, which Jason patrols.  It means that before a ship comes in, there must be an understanding between its owners and Sonny -- now Jason -- or else the guys who unload that ship will have accidents, or the crew will, or the cargo will.  That is illegal, but that isn't what matters. It's those mystery shipments that Jason now gets that are NOT coffee. The coffee was always a cover for the 'whatever it is.'  No drugs, no well-traveled ho's, who don't look like Joan Crawford in RAIN, and we have never been told what that 'something' might be.  But it's illegal.  Now, what comes in ships in the night that is illegal?  Guns. But Sonny don't need to sell no steenkin' guns! The US government will do that well enough, thank you.  I don't think the writers ever settled on what the mysterious cargo was to be, since we will never see it.  Now that Russian, who reminds me of a young Walter Slezak, (Erika Slezak's dad, from the movies) has no hesitation in bringing in what looks to be 'white powder' enough to make every nose in America fall off.  Of course Sonny will be sooo highly outraged to find this is so. He will have been BETRAYED AGAIN!  But what IS illegal that comes in on ships in the night, and by the way, wasn't it darling of Commrade Popov to hire a brand new captian to oversee this first, very important, terribly secret and expensive shipment of his? Just when you'd think he'd want to use somebody he knew thoroughly. Was it her former experience as Miss Cutie Patooty, Captain of the HOOTER'S SEA-ROVIN' RASCALS' YACHT CLUB that convinced Popov that Sweet Sam was the only person for the job?  Well, as somebody said here so well recently: 'Popov, Popon, Popov, Popon...

Has nobody yet told Sonny and Jason that booze hasn't been illegal to ship since 1933?

Sonny made it very clear when he 'inherited' Frank Smith's territories that he wouldn't be dealing with prostitution or drugs.  There are alot of other illegal activities that make lots of $$!  Money laundering, illegal import/export, gambling (in all aspects), loan sharking, etc.  They've hinted, from time to time, that he also dabbled in gun running, which wouldn't be unbelieveable.  Sonny was also involved in the protection racket.

Like most criminal leaders, Sonny had legitimate business interests too.  It was never 100% illegal.  Granted, they could have come up w/something more interesting than the coffee business as his main focus.  Locally, several yrs ago, there was a major smuggling business that used a legitmate import/export antiques business to front their illegal activities.  Didn't mean that every sale they made was illegal, just that it was part of a much bigger picture.

He smuggled gummy bears.  Or at least, that's what some of us surmised, since GH has never been explicit about what it is he does smuggle.  Art maybe?  Weapons?  Anything he can get a price for?  We really don't know.  The only thing we do know is that Sonny did NOT traffic in drugs, so the drugs he found yesterday *should* cause him a huge problem with Karpov.  We'll see.

  • Oh yeah, he launders money too, through the casino he owns on a private island and probably through other businesses as well. //SqueezeMe
