Topic: Classic GL Episodes Campaign Part 1: Hulu

Additional Comments: I'm racing a severe thunderstorm here, so I'll have to be brief out of necessity.
Anyone interested in lobbying for full classic episodes of Guiding Light, as I mentioned in my previous topic posts of the past two days, especially those who live in the United States, send e-mails to the content acquisition team at Hulu.

content@hulu.com

That's the e-mail address.

Be polite, be specific, and tell them who you are, especially if you're part of the coveted 18-49 demographic group. They are already showing episodes of Guiding Light from 2007 and 2008, which is great, BUT what would be really terrific would be if they could show classic episodes of GL, starting with __________. Put in the month and year you would like them to start with.

Here's what I wrote as an example. Feel free to copy and paste, if you're so inclined, or to put it in your own words.

"I'm 32 years old and a lifelong, multigenerational fan of Guiding Light. It's great that you have episodes from 2007 and 2008 here at Hulu, but what would be even better would be if you would show classic episodes. Guiding Light is television's longest running program. I know it's not possible to go all the way back to the beginning in the '50s, but decades' worth of episodes do exist, and so many fans would love to relive those moments. I'm not sure what the earliest time frame without any missing episodes would be, but I would love to see January 1982 and following here at Hulu. If you could go back any earlier, especially to January 1978 and then take it from there, that would be terrific. I'm one of many thousands of fans who would love to relive the classic episodes of Guiding Light here at Hulu, and I hope that you will give serious consideration to making that happen in the near future. You're already showing classic Another World from 1991 and '92, and I would love to see classic Guiding Light starting in the late '70s or early '80s here too. Thank you.

Sincerely,"

Please pass this information along to any GL fans you know whom you think would be interested in participating in this campaign to try and get the classic episodes available online. The more people we have participating, the better our chances are. (Most of the online AW fan community participated in the campaign to get AW back.)

Finally, I saved the press release from July of 2008 that announced the arrival of GL, AW, and As the World Turns at hulu:

TeleNext Media, Inc. announced on Friday its two long-running soap operas GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS, plus the classic soap opera ANOTHER WORLD, will be the first of the genre to make full episodes available for viewing on Hulu.com . Initially, viewers will be able to enjoy 18 full episodes of each show, with an additional three episodes going up on the site per week. GUIDING LIGHT will debut on July 25, 2008, AS THE WORLD TURNS on July 28, and ANOTHER WORLD on July 29.

"Our shows have always been media pioneers," said Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of TeleNext Media Inc. "We were the first to transition from radio to television and the first to podcast. We are proud to be first here as well, and happy to do it with such a great strategic partner as Hulu."

Both GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS will debut on Hulu with episodes that originally aired on television on June 1, 2007 (on ATWT this was Noah's first episode). ANOTHER WORLD will debut with an episode that originally aired on May 10, 1991 and that is also the episode viewers last saw when the show more recently aired on SOAPnet (in the middle of the Cass/Kathleen/Frankie triangle and Anne Heche's last weeks on the show).

Hopefully, someday they'll put up classic Guiding Light episodes too!

Just sent mine. I do hope a lot of people write. I asked if they could go back to the mid to late 70's, though I agree that 1983 was special to me since I stumbled across the 4 Musketeers as they were filming in Central Park-I would love to see those episodes again! Tribute Maker, have you spread the word elsewhere about this? I know there's a GL site on Facebook.

  • Thank you for the heads up! I joined the GL Facebook page just now. There are 14,283 other people who joined there ahead of me. Can you imagine if everyone there got involved in the effort to get classic episodes of GL posted online?--TributeMaker

Excellent! Leprechaun, your e-mail gets right to the point! This is what we need to say and do to let them know that they have a large audience just waiting for this.
I'm off to have dinner, but later tonight I'll post about TeleNext Media, the ones who were responsible for releasing 1991 and following Another World to Hulu, and to YouTube, and the ones who will ultimately be responsible for releasing classic Guiding Light if they are so inclined after our campaign. E-mails are the first part, but postcards are the second part of this campaign. It was that combination, kept up for about 6-7 months, that got us a definite answer from TeleNext and P&G, letting us know that they were actively working to find a way to bring Another World back to us, which they did a few months later at Hulu, and then several months after that, they started posting the episodes at YouTube as well, so those who live outside the United States could see them. The websites are already in place now, as opposed to back then, which I'm hoping is a good sign. I don't know about you, but I see no reason why the classic episodes from the late '70s or early '80s, whatever point they can start and not have any episodes missing, cannot coexist with the episodes from 2007 and 2008 at Hulu and YouTube.

Here's my e-mail. Thank you so much for getting this started!
Dear Hulu, My name is [fill in the blank] and I'm a 46 y/o long-time fan of GUIDING LIGHT. I'm aware that you're already making GUIDING LIGHT episodes from 2007-2008 available on HULU and I really appreciate it. But I would also love to see some of the classic episodes starting from the early-80's all the way through the 90's. I know a lot of earlier episodes were destroyed but I've heard rumors that episodes from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's are still available.
The show was at the top of its game from around 1981-1996 and I'd LOVE to be able to go back and relive some of those memories through Hulu.com.
I really appreciate the fact that you're also showing classic episodes of ANOTHER WORLD from '91 and '92 and would love it if GUIDING LIGHT could join its ranks.
Now that GUIDING LIGHT has been cancelled I think it's even more important that the show's incredible contribution to our culture and the soap opera genre be preserved. Thank you so much for considering this!
