Topic: NY Daily News Interview with RPG (Jake) - Spoilers

Jake's return on 'AMC' is a Goldin opportunity
By CAROLYN HINSEY

Jake Martin resurfaces on "All My Children" next week as a wounded hostage in Darfur, Sudan, now played by soap vet Ricky Paull Goldin (ex-Gus, "Guiding Light," ex-Dean, "Another World").

Needless to say, since Goldin has a long-term contract, Jake will make it out of Africa during May sweeps. "He gets to Pine Valley but is in the hospital," says Goldin. "He's got a deep, dark, secret. You're seeing somebody come back from a war. He's seen atrocities, and they're going to haunt him - and I have no plans to do that in the typical soap opera way."

Look for scenes with Jake's brother Tad, father Joe, rescuer Aidan and "Greenlee [Rebecca Budig], for the first time, after all this time. I'm just lying in a hospital bed as, one by one, they come in."

Goldin is circumspect about his recent exit from "Guiding Light," where he reportedly differed with bosses on the show's new direction, which involved location shoots, hand-held cameras and quick, MTV-like scenes.

"It's tricky for me to compare 'All My Children' to 'Guiding Light' without getting into details about 'Guiding Light' and what path they're on," says Goldin. "But there's a beautiful sense of professionalism over here [at "AMC"].

"The production quality is really high. They want to make every scene beautiful. Besides their Steadicams and their lighting, the sets are pretty extravagant. It feels like a fantasy."

As for the rumor that former co-star and best pal Beth Ehlers (Harley, "Guiding Light") is going to follow him to "AMC," Goldin will say only, "Beth is going to have no shortage of places she can go. Sometimes you've got to take a couple of punches before you wake up."

GL is in extremely sad shape. I miss Ricky PG as Gus, KZ is nowhere to be seen and the general atmosphere is bits of a story here and bits there nothing substantial. I hardly tune in anymore. Alexander is just a figment of my imagination, I mean really she has her on cash why doesn't she help out her beloved brother. Nothing makes sense, the hacks have hacked away at GL while the show disintergrates to nothingness. RIP GL.

I liked Ricky, but I still have on tape the daytime emmys from 2006 - and RPG and Ellen Wheeler sure were buddy-buddy kissy huggy kissy huggy in several shots on that broadcast.  Obviously they fell out as friends or whatever they were since that time.  Having flipped channels on several occasions to AMC - I don't see where it's so beautiful.  LOL.  The film looks hazy to me, or at least it did the last time I saw it.

The storyling of the soldier coming home from wartorn-wherever has been done to death, so although I thought I was going to tune in just to see him, I think I'll pass.

Next year, you'll probably get to see his half-man child or half-woman child surface from wherever war torn country, and he/she will already be a teenager so that they can spice up their summer months with a new teen.

  • As has been mentioned before, the shaky cameras & quick cuts aren't unique to GL or ATWT. AMC was having the same issues for a longer time, for much the same reasons. All soaps are going through growing pains w/the changes that they are being required to go through. Their camera people don't have the luxury of a hiatus to take time out to learn the ins & outs of the new equipment or techniques, so we are having to struggle w/their learning curve. AMC improved, slightly, over time & once the newness has worn off the other soaps will get back on track, at least w/the camera part of the show. eom
  • PS: You know that they had a falling out, personally? I sure didn't get that from the article. There is a big difference between having issues professionally & having them personally. Actors are also not necessarily personal friends w/professional colleagues or superiors. People are often 'kissy & huggy' during awards shows, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are personal friends or that it is the way they are IRL. eom

AMC is tanking fast so I don't know how much stock I would put in those high production values. It doesn't matter how pretty your sets are if your storylines suck.

  • ITA, and viewers have been complaining about the way AMC is 'filmed' since the show made the change. There's still an online petition about it. LOL! It's like they're trying to be all artsy-fartsy with some kind of edit delay?!? And truly - AMC's sets are sub-par compared to any soap filmed on the West Coast. Even the now-defunct Passions was better in this area.

Mr. Goldin's read-between-the lines commentary is mildly interesting - but I kind of have to chuckle - because hearing him wax enthusiastic about the ''production quality'' and ''extravagant sets'' over at 'All My Children' must mean he really, really misses working at 'Y&R'.

That was incredible!  RPG said it all without saying anything directly negative. I howled at his mention of the "Steadicam" and the "production quality."  He's a genius!  Go Ricky!!!
