Additional Comments: I ran across a really great interview with Pamela K. Long on Blog Talk Radio. The show is called "Brandon's Buzz." The interview was conducted the day after GL went off the air. The interview goes all the way back to Ms. Long's days on the soap "Texas" and her spectacular stint at Guiding Light. It was sooooo interesting. I was so curious as to why one of GL's heyday headwriters was never interviewed on her take, that GL was leaving the air. Ms. Long went on to say how "green" she was back in those days when she initially wrote for "Texas" and her first run at GL. She says that Jeff Ryder was a HUGE help to her when she initially came to GL. I also found it interesting that she claims Kim Zimmer wasn't her initial choice as Reva but, was so glad that she was vetoed completely when it came to casting the role. I also loved how she said the final episode of Guiding Light was such a gut-punch and brought her to tears. The interview went on for 1 hour and 47 minutes. I LOVED it!

I agree, it was a fantastic interview.  However, one has to wonder about some of her recollections.  Granted, it has been almost 20 years, but she didn't even remember that she wrote Reva's drive off the bridge in Florida.  I wouldn't think a writer would forget such a pivotal place in GL's past.  How could she forget the whole post partum storyline that she wrote?  Also, Pam decimated the Bauer family and she downplayed that.

  • I was sooo surprised that Pam Long said that she didn't write that story. I could've swore she did! I agree about the Bauers too. She kind of downplayed that, after saying that
  • that
  • you can't come on a show and kill off major characters, or something to that effect. I also found her recollections of writing for Santa Barbara and One Life to Live interesting. And, she LOVED Paul Rauch!
  • I pulled out an old tape. Pam definitely was the headwriter in the summer of 1990 when Reva drove off the bridge. Pam wrote the show until early in 1991. I loved both of her tenures. I liked the first one best, but 1987-1990 was very good as well.
  • Pam Long was one of my favorite GL head writers... created many great character and it truly was a magical time for the show. But the fact that she named Paul Rauch as her favorite producer to work with is absolutely mind-boggling and then takes away some of her credibility!
  • Yes, her saying that she and Rauch got along great kind of made me scratch my head. From what I understood, she and Gail Kobe had a great relationship. Kobe was responsible for Long coming to Guiding Light after Texas was cancelled.
