Topic: Damage Repair (Dead weight Characters...)

Additional Comments:

I was reading an interesting blog that commented on how GL should get rid of some dead weight characters & or recast characters that aren’t pulling their weight.  I think the blogger pretty nailed it, in my opinion.

Step 1  - Clean House

GL has a great deal of deal of dead weight walking around Springfield right now.  These useless characters have been pushed on us while fan favorites make guest appearances.  Finally, Cassie is leaving.  She should take with her, in no particular order:  Grady, Daisy, Rafe and the current Remy.  These characters, minus Remy are just not working.  They don’t fit into what GL is about.  Let Grady kill Rafe out of jealousy and then have Daisy turn in the creep and leave town to join Harley so they can rebuild their relationship.

With conditions, I'd keep Natalia.  She does have somewhat a purpose.  She keeps Olivia on the staight and narrow and would be a nice companion to Frank but...keep her as a supporting character, not lead.

Step 2  - Recast the Characters who Aren’t Working

Specifically, Remy.  Remy is supposed to be a hot head character, yet the actor has no fire.  Find the right actor to play this role and GL might have an actual African American male character that is a force.  With a recast Shayne about to hit town, I see these two characters as GL’s new future of male stars.  Plus, there is a gold mine in the Boudreaux family.  It’s high time, GL once again featured a core of interesting characters, who just happen to be black.  Make Clayton, Felicia, Mel & a well recast Remy a solid, core Springfield family.

I'm not sure what good Nat would be without Rafe.  The last thing we need is her moping around for years longer over the loss of her son.  I don't think Grady or Cyrus have a place in this drama.  I can't wait to be rid of Cassie.  Miss Reva and Jeffrey.

  • Good point about Nat & Rafe. She'd NEVER get over that. I don't think I could stand to watch endless scenes of her grieving.

    I agree in general.

However, Remy has really grown on me this year.  I just think they should let him pull himself out of the rut a bit more.  I agree that the Boudreauxs have much potential.

Listen, I don't hate Nat, but she's boring as all get out.  Frank is already boring as all get out and is capable (or used to be) of so much more and deserves so much more than snoozefest miss Goodytwo shoes hypocrite.  Not sure what I want for her, definitely more in the background, though.  Seemed like she had more chem with Matt today than Frankie poo.  I might be able to handle that pairing.

On the fence with Rafe, too.  He's been much more tolerable since his return.

I'd much rather see improved writing and prioritizing of characters and SLs than ditching and recasting.

I do want Grady gone, gone, gone.  I doubt a recast or would help and I would loathe an attempt to rewrite his character.

Even Daisy could be tolerable if they wrote a decent storyline.  This cop crap is tooooo sickening for words.

If they don't sever Marina and Mallet, I'd not complain if they both went.  I used to really love mallet, but he induces stomach cramps with Betty Boop wannabe.  (My apologies to the real Ms. Boop.)

Oh, and I bet it will be Cyrus that follows Cassie off screen, not Grady.  I happen to think Cyrus has much potential, though they seem to be rollercoasting on what they want to do with him.  Hope I am wrong.

  • Well said. I too find Nat somewhat boring but...not as much, lately. I do agree, she & Frank would be boring overload, together but...I wouldn't mind them together. She & Matt might be interesting. Rafe is okay. Just give him something interesting to do. I'm indifferent about Grady. I agree, Cyrus has potential. I'd hate to see him leave with Ms. Cassie.
  • *Betty Boop wannabe*!! That is good! LMAO!!! Roxie

While I agree that Remy & Mel's family have the potential to be a part of the Springfield community, I don't ever see them being a core family.  GL lost its way a long time ago.  TPTB (Corp) took the show off the rails & it has been struggling ever since.  The sense of community has been lost, as has the whole concept of core families.  They've destroyed the Spauldings, Lewises & Bauers.  Great potential, but they've proven that they aren't interested in tapping that potential or having it be realized.

While I'm all for killing off Rafe, Natalia, etc., I'm not for recasting roles w/these wannabes, instead of real actors.  Talent needs to take priority & so does finding the right role for the talented actors coming in.  Too many have no focus or direction & the development of both characters & storylines is lacking as well.

As long as there is a stronger sense of apathy at the top of the decisionmaking process, the less we are going to see of a viable soap.  That also applies to building on the strong foundation of fans, which TPTB (Corp) consistantly refused to do--now they've weakened it to the point that it would take 5-10 yrs (at least) to get it back!  That is a daunting proposition, especially during difficult economic times.  So is reversing the p.o.v. that has been perpetuated in the industry over the last 20+ yrs--that soap operas have 'run their course and are dying a natural death'.  As I've said before, there is nothing natural about what has been happening.  It has been consistant, intentional, destruction.  Soaps have great potential, but not when taken in this direction.

  • The sense of community is somewhat gone. Still holding out hope it makes a return.
  • Hope springs eternal! I'm still hoping for a great turnaround in the mindset of the Suits & turning creative control back over to a creative TEAM, rather than taking the low road approach of overly relying on marketing to make decisions they aren't qualified (on several levels) to make. I'm just not at all confident that the best approach is to 'clean house'. What would they be replacing core characters with? Would they be using that as just another pathetic excuse to purge more vets--particularly the older ones that many Suits don't see as 'viable'?! Would their replacement characters be more developed & be better (all around) than the likes of Natalia, Rafe, Daisy, Grady, etc? eom

Sort of agree.  I like Remy.  I don't like Natalia and find her a useless character.  I actually have grown to like Rafe, although he really could use a major eyebrow tweeze.  He IS a Spaulding after all, and I don't see why Lizzie isn't helping him since he is her cousin.  There are still Spauldings with some money so why aren't they helping him?

  • It would be interesting to see Lizzie looking out for Rafe. She's grown up (somewhat) It'd be nice to see her take him under her wing, sort of like Billy did her....and how Alan will know doubt do once the business war is in full swing.
