THE FINAL 3

The Final 3 sing three songs apiece. Each Idol is assigned a judge who picks a song. The Idol picks a song and the producers pick a song. The Idols have no control over two-thirds of the song choices.

It’s a process that allows TPTB to control the outcome. Want to throw an Idol under the bus or promote and Idol? Control the songs they will sing. It can be a mine field for the remaining Idols or the push that one needs to win the title.

ROUND 1 - Judges Song Choice

David Archuleta - (Paula Abdul) - ''And So It Goes'' by Billy Joel - What a lovely interpretation of a beautiful song. Paula chose well. I agree with Paula that he was a 'storyteller' tonight and couldn't disagree more with Simon. This was not the easiest song to sing. Little David sang beautifully and connected with his audience.

Randy - he can sing anything
Paula - a pure and stunning performance
Simon - predictable but not outstanding

Syesha Mercado - (Randy Jackson) - ''If I Ain’t Got You'' by Alicia Keys - She began with a very restrained vocal with nice color but slid into her power singing a bit. I would have preferred Randy choose something entirely different than her 'usual'. Her interpretation sounded all too familiar as did the song style. She looked beautiful.

Randy - amazing
Paula - applauds her for taking on an artist like Alicia Keys
Simon - sang it very well but could have made it more her own

David Cook - (Simon Cowell) - ''The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'' by Roberta Flack - He changed it up a bit but still remained faithful to Roberta Flack. It was nice to be able to hear another side to his vocals. Variety is a good thing but I found it a bit boring.

Randy - needed more rock~~too old fashioned
Paula - she loved it
Simon - one of his best performances to date

ROUND 2 - Contestants Song Choice

David Archuleta - (David's Choice) - ''With You'' by Chris Brown - This song choice didn't seem to be the best for him. It had an uncomfortable sound and feel. The entire performance seemed forced, not natural to David. Possibly, he truly is made for ballads. I prefer him in his comfort zone.

Randy - not the right song
Paula - should sing more songs like this
Simon - like a Chihuahua trying to be a tiger

Syesha Mercado - (Syesha's Choice) - ''Fever'' by Peggy Lee - OK, no one can come close to Peggy Lee but I liked Syesha's interpretation. She sang in a very controlled manner, never over singing the song which was my fear. I liked her 'take' on this classic.

Randy - sang it well
Paula - doesn't show who she is as an artist
Simon - lame cabaret performance

David Cook - (David's Choice) - ''Dare You To Move''by Switchfoot - Sorry folks, this is not my cup of tea. It sounded like a bunch of 'nothing' to me. I'd say he's done much better work.

Randy - not his best performance
Paula - the song was too abbreviated
Simon - not the best melodic song

ROUND 3 - Producers Song Choice

David Archuleta - (The Producers) - ''Longer'' by Dan Fogelberg - Another gorgeous song for Little David. He was definitely in his element. His vocal was performed with great feeling and he seemed to have a grasp of the song even though it is older in tone and substance.

Randy - in the zone
Paula - lovely
Simon - sang the song well

Syesha Mercado - (The Producers) - ''Hit Me Up'' by Gia Farrell - She's sounded too much as she has in past weeks. There are so many other songs that could have been chosen for her. Her vocal was fine but she could have done much more with a better song.

Randy - just ok
Paula - song doesn't define her
Simon - the song is forgettable

David Cook - (The Producers) - ''I Don't Want To Miss A Thing'' by Aerosmith - David was back in his element and sang his heart out. I am not familiar with this song so will refrain from commenting and let the judges comments stand.

Randy - predictable
Paula - see ya in the finals
Simon - he wins the night

COMMENTS~~ I never want to hear the word phone book or 'in the zone' again. Are dress codes only for female performers? Hopefully, next year something can be done about those screaming kids!!!

Please don't bring up poor song choice when that choice was NOT made by the contestant. How unfair!! Criticize the producers and judges who made the choices.

ANOTHER ''FORGETTABLE'' NIGHT!!!

RESULTS~~ Wednesday at 9:00 EDT

You do a great job, songbird. Hang in there for a little bit yet, LOL!

David Archuleta--Paula's choice--Nice vocals. Nothing special. Good performance. I liked it.
David's choice--Some was good some wasn't. I liked that it was more upbeat than his usual ballad.
Producer's choice--Very good. Suited him.

Syesha--Randy's choice--Beautiful. Thought she did well.
Syesha's choice--I liked it but I thought it was too high in some parts. I liked the way she performed it. She has a sexy way about her which has come out in the last few weeks.
Producer's choice--I thought she did well but I agree it wasn't the song that defines her, but then, it wasn't her choice so what is she supposed to do? She was set up. I don't think it was right of the judges to tell her how bad it was for her when she didn't pick the song. They should say that "this song was the wrong one picked for you" and it's not your fault. Something like that. They said that for David A. on his last song but not to Syesha. I liked the way she performs her songs. She is more animated than David A. and has much better stage presence. David Cook usually has his guitar to give him something more.

David Cook--Simon's choice--I was surprised how well he did. Especially the note at the end.
David's choice--Not that good. He was off key in spots. Bad choice. Should have stayed with Collective Soul. According to my son, that is a much better song.
Producer's choice--Best song of the night for him.

COMMENTS: A couple of things that bothered me--Why sing three songs? Cut the producers since they obviously don't know what they are doing. Let the contestants sing two WHOLE songs. Then there wouldn't be this thing where the song would have sounded better if it wasn't edited badly or they had more than 1:30. Then give it to them! I did not like the favoritism and not laying fault where it is due. I also didn't like Simon's insistence that Syesha's song, "Hit Me Up" was about penquins. This is one time where Paula was the sane one and was correct. That was a song from the penguin movie, "Happy Feet" but was NOT about penguins. Simon, I wish you would study your songs before the show! They wanted a Battle of the David's and they made sure to have one. Now, it better be good!

  • Looks as though you're pretty much in agreement with the masses!! As for the producers......they DO know what they're doing! (LOL) They're eliminating and protecting contestants as are the judges. They're all very savvy. The amount of time allotted per song is ridiculous. I believe last evening was only 65 seconds in order to fit 9 songs into an hour. Some songs are shredded by the editing. I really detest the practice and would like to hear the entire song if possible. I'm also completely frustrated by the laying of blame for poor song choice on the contestants IF the contestants didn't choose the songs. Makes no sense at all. Of course, you know I believe that everyone (including judges) should do their homework, thus avoiding ''penguin'' arguments. How stupid!!! Something tells me that this show will never be ''fixed''. /sb

I honestly think this year they got it right, as far as the final three. I didn't know what that votefortheworst.com site was gonna do, but seems they lost their momentum.

    DAVID COOK will win, easily.

The songs were forgettable last night. I did like David Cook's First Time Ever I Saw You Face, and David A's Dan Fogleberg song.. . But Syesha didn't do anything except sing the songs the way the original singer sang them. She can sing, and should do broadway. She is an actress.

All in all it's been pretty boring this year. I am soooo tired of the judges. Like W.E. - get a fricking dictionary and find some new words dawg!!!

  • It's just another forgettable year filled with forgettable performances and songs. (borrowed that word from Simon). Randy and Simon acted like a bunch of high school boys. I'd love to see Randy go. He adds nothing to the show. Both 'boys' should be embarrassed by their behavior. I think Cook will win on the bulk of his work, surely not on his peformances last evening. /sb

As you know I haven't been watching since the first season. Only having seen the last half of last season and as much as I could this season I think I'm done.

    My problems/thoughts:

1.) Paula and Randy are so predictable with their comments and quite immature a lot of the time. Simon may get caustic but he always has something different to say. Paula needs a Thesaurus - look up the word proud and use ANY OF THE OTHER FORMS. I'm so tired of I'm PROUD of you... you should be PROUD of yourself...how PROUD we are, your parents are...enough. Wonder if the Thesaurus includes DAWG??

2.) The arm waving by the peanut gallery. As soon as the music begins UP go the arms. Why? This cheapens the reason it was started and gives no meaning to it's existence.

3.) For a show that's been around there are so many problems. Maybe it's Nigel but by this point you'd think they'd have worked out the kinks (lol).

4.) As my mother would say make up my mind. They asked Carly to be more of a showman (woman). Syesha goes to the trouble of a contained performance and is told it's more of a caberet act? David A. just acts like a little boy and he's never really called on that (a little tonight on his alleged dancing).

5.) I was happy they complimented Syesha's look since they have questioned others on this. She came prepared to wow tonight. Maybe not all three numbers but she gave her all and got shot down on points that contradicted the judges' in weeks past.

6.) I truly feel David C. is the IDOL and that writing has been on the wall for weeks. If Syesha slips in so be it but if it goes to David A. they've jumped the shark and should close their doors. He has a lovely voice but it's my opinion that he appeals to a very small demographic - then again that might be where the votes are.

Simon sure feels like Syesha is going tomorrow. I hope not!

  • W.E., ...THIS-------------------------------IS AMERICAN IDOL!!!! Clay Aiken (season 2) made some interesting comments recently. It's not the same show that he competed on where people were amateurs looking for help in fulfilling dreams. Now it's all about contracts, politics, and people with experience. (Jason C was the exception - a true amateur). The show was so manipulated this week that it made me sick as it does every year. As I said in my recap, ''The Idols have no control over two-thirds of the song choices. It’s a process that allows TPTB to control the outcome. Want to throw an Idol under the bus or promote an Idol? Control the songs they will sing. It can be a mine field for the remaining Idols or the PUSH that one needs to win the title.'' As for the points you've made, I couldn't agree more. Randy really needs to go. Honestly, he's an embarrassment. Is it too much to hope that Syesha makes the top 2??? Talk about poetic justice for this dismal excuse of a show. Like you, I think she's talented and could have a career in theater. Thanks for your insightful comments. /sb
  • I don't doubt Syesha probably already has offers or they will flood in once this season ends. The girl has talent and up against all odds has shown poise, dignity and star power plus she's a talented beauty. There was another girl who didn't win back when and has had a career on TV and is currently on Broadway. I don't recall her name but Syesha is like her and LIKE HER will do just fine. eom/WE
  • Tamara Grey...I'm sure I spelled it wrong, but I think she's the one you mean...Blink
  • That's her. You gave me enough to find her - it's spelled Tamyra Gray. She's done two Broadway shows and a few TV shows memorably on Boston Public.eom/WE
  • She's FABULOUS. I was SO upset when she was voted off. The talent wayyyy back then was so good and ''fresh''. /sb

All of them did at least one song very well.     I loved David A's first song and I love Longer by Dan Fogelberg and thought he did great on it too.   Terry said the same thing (about the lyrics being too old for him) before Simon did.    I don't care.   I liked it!

Syesha was so beautiful tonight.   The girl can sing, but I think she came on too late to be in the final two.     I'll bet she'll be in a Broadway play before the year is out!

David C did well on The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and his last song was kindof the same old, same old, but I still think he's the winner of this year's Idol.    Although I like David A and won't be disappointed if he wins.   Except a little.   Because I think both of them will make it in the business, but David A has way more time to do it.

That said, of ALL the songs in ALL of the world, WTH were those three thinking when they picked the song of their choice to sing?!?!?!     I thought all three choices were quite poor.   Syesha did a good job with Fever, but YAWN!   David A's song I didn't like at all, and didn't like David C's too much better.    ACK!    Anyone else wonder what they were smokin' when they picked the song THEY wanted to sing.    OMG!    I'm still shaking my head about that.    LOL

  • I tend to agree with you about the judges and producers song choices and how they were performed. As for the contestant choices, I have no idea wht DA and DC were thinking. DA just can't sing up-tempo and that thing by DC was ugly. I must say that I think Syesha did Peggy Lee proud with her interpretation of ''Fever''. I hope to see that girl on B/way. I think she's very talented and a bright light in a dismal season. /sb

I thought it was all a bit boring tonight.

I agree that David A. does better with ballads, but it would have been a bit much for him to sing 3 of them tonight. I do like that Chris Brown song, but there was something missing when David sang it. I also agree that the judges, especially Simon, spent a lot of time talking about the producer's song choices.

I enjoyed David C. singing "The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face" way more than I thought I would. It did seem like he only sang one line of the song, but at least when he sings a song I know, I can appreciate how good his voice is. I didn't like the other 2 songs.

I seriously doubt Syesha is going to be the next American Idol. While I think "Fever" has been done to death, I can see where she was using her last (?) time on the show to show off her theatrical chops. I don't see her having a hit record as much as being on Broadway.

  • I agree with all you've said (er typed, lol). I will add more comments above but had to voice my agreement.eom/WE
  • Blink, I happen to agree with you as well. Very well put. I'll just add that I don't care who wins, so whoever is eliminated tonight will be no 'upset' for me. I actually missed Jason. It's a shame he had problems with the pressures of learning several songs. That 60's era guy provided some comedy relief to this somber, boring show. Clay is right.....it's not the show he competed on. The judges and producers are SO transparent, aren't they??? It's disgusting. Since Syesha was really auditioning, IMO, I hope she was seen by some people who find her talented and would be interested in working with her. /sb

ROUND 1 - Judges Song Choice
David Archuleta - (Paula Abdul) - ''And So It Goes'' by Billy Joel - I loved him singing this. His voice is very soothing.

Syesha Mercado - (Randy Jackson) - ''If I Ain’t Got You'' by Alicia Keys - I didn't love it but it was okay.

David Cook - (Simon Cowell) - ''The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'' by Roberta Flack - Wow! Loved his version of this beautiful song. Very nice!!

ROUND 2 - Contestants Song Choice
David Archuleta - (David's Choice) - ''With You'' by Chris Brown - I don't know this song and have no idea who Chris Brown is but I really enjoyed watching David A doing something different than a ballad.

Syesha Mercado - (Syesha's Choice) - ''Fever'' by Peggy Lee - It was 'blah' for me.

David Cook - (David's Choice) - ''Dare You To Move''by Switchfoot - I missed this performance and don't know the song."

ROUND 3 - Producers Song Choice
David Archuleta - (The Producers) - ''Longer'' by Dan Fogelberg - I am a Dan Fogelberg fan and this is one of my favorite songs and I actually got a little misty-eyed. Beautiful!!

Syesha Mercado - (The Producers) - ''Hit Me Up'' by Gia Farrell - Again, just kind of 'blah' for me.

David Cook - (The Producers) - ''I Don't Want To Miss A Thing'' by Aerosmith - Yep, he'll be in the finals. He's just so good! Doesn't matter if he doesn't win AI, he'll be getting a record deal.

  • Like you, I liked DA more than many last evening with round 2 being his weakest. I hated DC in round 2 and wasn't impressed with round 3, but thank goodness, the bulk of his work will get him through. It seemed to me that Syesha was auditioning and not really performing for the judges or us since I'm sure she expects to be voted off. I'm sure she hopes to be seen by some theater people. In that sense, she succeeded. Btw, I thought she did a fine rendition of ''Fever'' which is no small fete since it belongs to Peggy Lee. /sb
