Additional Comments:

Tonight we continue with a Ballroom Round and a Latin Round. The couples also were given permission by the judges to do one lift per dance, if they wish (it isn't mandatory), but it has to be in character with the dance. Of course, to help their scores, you know that they will all do the lifts.

BALLROOM ROUND

Clips of the couples going over lifts with a lot of falls is shown.

Kristi & Mark-QUICKSTEP-(Not sure)
Practice Session: Second place. More determined. Will do lift but only on first dance. Mark says that the lift is not in character with the Samba. Kristi is disappointed.
Dance: Very well performed. Kristi's hand postion might have been a bit off but it was a very good performance.
Len--That has cheered me up no end! Right back where you were a couple of weeks ago. 10
Bruno--A super candidate with a super ticket to the final. Beautifully moved around the floor. 10
Carrie Ann--Loved that they danced toward the judges but got a little out of sync. Technique is always flawless. 9
TOTAL: = 29

Tom--"Thanks to Kristi & Mark for putting Len in a good mood."

Mario & Karina-VIENNESE WALTZ-If I Ain't Got You--
Practice:Excited about the lifts. Practice in the pool.
Dance:Very good. Better posture. Beautiful lift.
Bruno--DWTS has a new prince. Romantic, elegant. All polish & distinction. 9
Carrie Ann--Nice and stiff. Much more elegant. Posture was correct. Lift completely enhanced your routine. 9
Len--Your ballroom dancing reminds me of Britney Spears getting out of a car. But tonight this was the most elegant I've seen you do. 9
TOTAL: = 27

Samantha interview--asks him about Len's critique and Mario impersonates Len.

Marissa & Tony-FOXTROT-New York, New York--
Practice--Tony is proud of Marissa. Looked clumsy in the lift.
Dance: She looked beautiful and elegant in this dance. Her costume was lovely on her this time. Nice movement. The lift came out looking very good. More graceful.
Carrie Ann--Loved the way you connect with the audience. 9
Len--Look better when you were in hold than when you weren't. Great posture, lovely movement around the floor. 8
Bruno--More gliding movement. Bold, brassy but not appropriate for the dance in the quarterfinals. I thought I was going to see Ethel Merman up there (sings) "There's No Business Like Show Business"--wicked and engaging. Tom--"...we'll adjust Bruno's meds." 8
TOTAL: = 25

Samantha interview--Marissa to Bruno--"If you want Ethel Merman, I'll give you Ethel Merman!" & says this impersonating Merman's voice.

Jason & Edyta-TANGO-Weird Tango music--
Practice: Will also do a lift. To get the fun side of Samba, Edyta gave Jason a wig, maracas, & frilly Samba shirt to loosen up. Ballroom dancers secret weapon--spray tan. He has a tan that God gave him, but he needs a Samba tan.
Dance: Very good. Good posture. Beautiful lift at the end.
Len--Very good job. A tad like an Argentine tango. This is supposed to be Ballroom tango. 9
Bruno--Was so sexy, so beautiful, poetry in motion. Edyta-never danced more beautiful. Jason-stunning. 10
Carrie Ann--Says Bruno is possessed the way he is acting tonight. Breathtakingly beautiful to watch. Thought it was fantastic and intriguingly great. 10
TOTAL: = 29

Tom-Tomorrow: Exciting countdown of the judges Top 10 favorite dances of the first 5 seasons.

Cristián & Cheryl-TANGO-Beat It (I did not think this was good Tango music but it worked for Cris. Both even wore one glittered glove like MJ.)--
Practice: Dr.(looking at Cris' x-ray)--"Significant bleeding around the bicep. Tendon, and a complete rupture and tearing of the tendon away from the bone. Needs surgery but can put it off for two to three weeks but cannot put any force on the bicep." Dances with arm in sling. Biggest challenge to choreograph to disguise Cris's injury. We are here because a lot of people voted for us and the only way we can thank them is to keep on dancing. Determined to do lifts but Cheryl is really worried about him. Cris--"We will leave the show dancing not because of an injury. Teamwork--One hand and two hearts."
Dance: Amazing! Did a wonderful dance. The lift went well but Cheryl did the most of it. Has on a suit which covers his braced arm.
Bruno--You are the man with the golden arm. Could not see any problems with your arm. 9
Carrie Ann--I saw nothing at all wrong with that Tango. Great job! 10
Len--I appreciate your performance. Great job with the choreography. Well done. 9
TOTAL: = 28

LATIN ROUND

Kristi & Mark-SAMBA-Volaré--Fantastic! Fun dance!
Carrie Ann--Didn't care for it. A bit awkward. A little bit out of control. 8
Len--Great speed fantastic spins. 9
Bruno--Bejewled hummingbird. 9
TOTAL: = 29 + 26 = 55 out of 60

Mario & Karina-JIVE-Little Bitty Pretty One--Terrific Jive! Looked like they had a lot of fun.
Len--Roughness about it. All right. No technique in the footwork. 8
Bruno--That was the spirit of Rock n' Roll. (Tom-"Len's closer to the Rock of Ages.") 9
Carrie Ann--Brought a new flavor to the Jive. Feet were a little flexed. 9
TOTAL: 27 + 26 = 53 out of 60

Marissa & Tony-MAMBO-Latin music--Very nice but didn't care for it as much as their Foxtrot. Didn't care for the orange costume on her.
Bruno--You can do sexy! Beautiful Mambo. Great hip action. Loved pepperpot at the end. 9
Carrie Ann--Committed to the dancing, but foot came down at the end. Turns worked against you. Great job. 8
Len--You've really come out and performed. A little bit dainty and not down and dirty. 8
TOTAL: 25 + 25 = 50 out of 60
NOTE: Len complains that Mario is too raunchy (a few weeks ago) and Marissa is not dirty enough. Can't please him.

Jason & Edyta-SAMBA-It Had Better Be Tonight--Edyta is almost wearing a costume again. Still has a stiffness about him. Didn't think this was as good. I agree with Dance Center last week in that Jason does the same pose over and over again.
Carrie Ann--Looked like you were struggling. 8
Len--Didn't like it a lot. Next week is the semi-final and all right isn't enough. 7
Bruno--Lost rhythm. Not as focused as you usually are. 8
TOTAL: 29 + 23 = 52 out of 60

Tom reminds us that Rascal Flatts will be on Results show for 100th episode.

Cristián & Cheryl-MAMBO---Cris wears some glittered material to cover his brace with a sleeveless shirt. Another one armed lift done fantastically! I think he has saved himself for another week. He has finally got into his Latin background.
Len--Fabulous job. 9
Bruno--The things you can do with one arm. More energy than a volcano in the Andes. 10
Carrie Ann--Definitely Latin and you two are definitely on fire. 10
TOTAL: 28 + 29 = 57 out of 60
Jumps up to hug all the rest of the dancers as they give him a Standing O. They are so happy for him.
Samantha interview--Cris says that "We should have started dancing with one arm way before." They've been so supportive of me.

Marissa may be the one to go although she has improved quite a bit.

Next week--Pick the next two dances out of a hat.

Tomorrow I may have a double recap. One for the Special and one for the Results Show. It depends on what all happens on the Special. It sounds like it is jam packed so there will probably be a separate recap for that. Can't wait!!

  • I know what you mean, Blinkie. I've come down to just watching one of the shows online. I've got too much with taping both this show and AI. Tuesday night was nuts with all the shows. Wait until finale week! You might have to put me in a straight jacket, LOL! ~~ I love that expression of Len's too! I almost put it on the recap but there was just so much. If you missed some of the performances with all of your ''bouncing'', go to www.abc.go.com, go into 'Full Episodes', click on DWTS and click on Monday's show. You can always FF it if you just want to see the dances and forget anything else. Just move the arrow. ~ eom. Linda
  • Thanks, Linda. I did record the entire show, but I scan through a lot of it...mostly Mario...because I don't have the time or patience to watch the whole show...Blinkie

    Excellent recap, Linda! Thank you.

First, I'm glad that the judges allowed lifts in certain cases. Second, we had the usual mix of dances....one strong, one weaker!!! I think the competition is much more evenly matched than in any other season. This is tough except for those who have a real knowledge of dance. That wouldn't me!!!

I think Mario may be in trouble this week. I sense that he doesn't have a large enough fanbase to keep him there. However, I enjoyed both of his dances. Marissa does nothing for me but I don't think she'll leave just yet. JMO. I loved Jason / Edyta's Tango and the music. I'll have to get the title of the song. Ballroom favorites were Jason and Kristi.

I think the Latin Round was weaker for all. I didn't have a favorite. However, I think I saw figure skating routines in Kristi's Samba. I've never noticed it before, but I thought it was so obvious this time. The girl had moves that she used in figure skating like that ''sit spin'' for example. Anyone else notice that? I wonder if Carrie Ann didn't want to bring it up and ''stir the pot''.

As for Christian, I think he was over scored a bit. I hope he doesn't end up with a worse injury by continuing to dance. I honestly don't know how he's able to do this. Loved his Tango. The man is determined and I'm happy for him.

REALLY looking forward to tonight!!! I'll have to watch on tape since I'm recapping AI and the two shows are against each other. Why oh why do they do that?

  • Thank you! I tried harder this time to keep it shorter but with two dances, it's kind of difficult. I was glad to see the lifts. It is nice to let everyone use them once and not just those couples in the finals. You are right in that one dance is weaker. I think that is because of trying to learn two in that short time. It is better to get one as perfect as you can instead of two that are just so-so. Mario--If I could have answered yesterday, I would have said that I have been wondering about Marissa's fanbase too, but that if she didn't go, I was hoping for Jason because I thought Mario was better than Jason. If you can get that song would be great! I didn't know how to even search for it. It sounded like that one familiar Tango song but with a twist so I wasn't sure if it was that one. Kristi--I started to put in my comments the same thing about skating routines. I recognized those same positions and what I thought was the ''sit spin''. I took out the comment when they came to Marissa and she did the exact same sit spin. When she went up before the judges, Bruno complimented her on her ''pepperpot''. So I knew that this was a regular dance move. It's called the ''pepper pot spin''. It's just that Kristi is used to those kinds of spins from skating and can do them well, which worked to her advantage, whereas when Marissa tried it, it didn't work very well at all. I think I even saw it in either one of the pro dances that night or else in Stacey Keibler's Samba on the Judge's Special. So this is a legitimate dance move. Cris might have been a little overscored but I think part of the score was going for Cheryl's choreography, which it shouldn't. I also hope that he is not overstressing his arm. ''Why oh why do they do that?'' Because they want to drive us nuts! ~ eom. Linda

Thanks for doing the recap in W.E. absence Linda!

    Here's my 2 cents:

Kristi and Mark - I liked their quickstep and thought it was definitely worthy of their scores.  The Samba was outstanding and I don't see what the judges were talking about and why they didn't like it.  They deserved 3 nines for that.

Mario and Karina - Loved their ballroom dance and his posture was great.  What were the judges looking at with his Jive?  First of all, he did some awkward thing jumping off the stage.  Was that supposed to be a cartwheel?  It looked pretty bad and he almost fell.  Then at the end, he totally flubbed the second part of his lift where he flipped Karina around.  They also ended awkwardly.  Not a mention of this from the judges.  He should have gotten 3 eights for that.

Marisa and Tony - Great Foxtrot, elegant and the lift was very nice.  Why did she get two 8's?  Her Mambo wasn't as good and there has been a lot better on the show.  Her scores were justified for that dance.  She has come a very, very long way though.

Jason and Edyta - I loved that tango and what's the deal with Len?  There was nothing wrong with that dance so he had to nitpick that it was too Argentinian?  Please.  The Samba was not great.  There was definitely an awkwardness about it, but Holy Cow, impressive lift at the end.  Here's where I have a problem though: They get a 7, but Mario gets great scores for his jive.  Definitely not fair.

Christian and Cheryl - I know he's working with only 1 arm, but I truly thought his tango was ho-hum.  Nothing great to watch.  That 10 from Carrie Ann was a sympathy score.  That Mambo though, OH MY GOD!!!  It was fun, hip shaking, sexy and raunchy all at the same time.  I didn't even notice he wasn't using his left arm.  I was very busy staring at his naked chest, but that's a whole different critique.  Despite the fact that he's injured, that was amazing.  He deserved a 30 for that.

I admire Christian's perseverence, and he definitely held his own last night, but I think risking further injury is a little foolish here.  He clearly uses the hurt arm and I'm wondering if it will just get worse.

This is the point in the competition where I hate the judges.  Everyone is scored very closely so that the audience has to decide who stays and who goes. Also their personal preferences come out in spades and it doesn't seem fair.

Bottom two: Jason and Edyta and Marisa and Tony.  Going home:  Anyone's guess.  I don't think it's a shoe in for Marisa to go.

  • You're welcome, Annie! I liked both K&M's dances too, and thought that CA was low on her score. The judges seemed pickier of the performances this time. I didn't notice that Mario almost fell. I don't think it was supposed to be a cartwheel, just a regular jump. I did notice that when he flipped Karina around for the second part of the lift, it didn't go as smoothly, which is why Len called him on 'Roughness' but otherwise he had a very good Jive. Marissa has come a long way IMO also and I thought her scores for that Foxtrot were low. She did well but Bruno and Len expected more at this point in the competition. There are two different types of Tangos, one being ballroom, which they are supposed to be doing, and one that is Argentinian, which they are not. I guess there was too much of the Argentinian style in this one. I don't know the difference myself. But Len gets picky on these things. Yes, Jason had a great lift at the end of his Samba but the rest was so stiff and awkward where Mario's Jive was more fluid and smooth. I was surprised at the 7, too, but as Len said, that for this point in the competition, he should be a lot better. I really liked C&C's Tango but was surprised at the 10. The Mambo was very good because at the beginning of the competition he had trouble with Latin dances and he improved so much. I didn't notice the one arm either. LOL, at the naked chest line. He is some eye candy isn't he? I'm wondering the same thing about the use of his arm. If he does go all the way, they have to ''up the ante'' on the dances and I'm afraid he could damage it worse. I just hope all goes well. The judges get tougher at this stage in the competition and do seem to show favoritism, especially at this point, it isn't right. Those were my Bottom 2. You were right about Marissa. Thanks for all your comments. ~ eom. Linda

I agree with pretty much everything you said.  That 'Beat It' was really odd music for a tango wasn't it.  I also think Kristi and Mark's Samba was GREAT... as usual the judges really confuse me sometimes.  I was (as Carrie Ann said about Marissa's dance a while back) BORED with Jason's Samba though although it is always interesting to see what Edyta is ALMOST wearing.  But it I had a figure like that, I might almost wear that too.  LOL...  I COULD tell that Christian was favoring his arm but still did fantastic dances.  He's definitely the most IMPROVED.  I do think Kristi should have been higher scored on her last dance so I really think that she SHOULD really be in the top spot or at least tied, but how cool is it that Christian is in the top spot this week.

I really do think this is Marissa's time to go and if the posts HERE are any indication, she will be.  IN MY OPINION, this season has the most evenly matched contestants (fanbase wise at least).  Good casting this time.    I can't wait for the SPECIAL!  We get to see MAKS!  Have ya'll seen the ''Jared's'' commercial?  It's obviously an old commercial, a few years ago when Maks still had his ponytail.  It has Maks, Alec, and others dancing around as the girl gets a ring from JARED's... ordinarily, I hate the JARED's commercials, that ''He went to Jared's..'' over and over again just BUGS me, but I do like the one with Maks in it.  LOL...

  • 'Beat It' worked though, but even so, I still didn't like it for a Tango. I thought Kristi & Mark's Samba was great too. She has really improved with her emotions and facial expressions and I thought she did a great job on that and was full of energy. Jason's Samba wasn't anything spectacular. I wonder if that's why Edyta wears those costumes. To take your mind off of the routine. That's why I said that she was almost wearing a costume, LOL! But, like you, I would show off a body like that myself...if I had one like that, LOL! Cristián's dances were fantastic. He really had to control himself to not use that arm. Yes, he has definitely improved. I was with everyone here and was sure Marissa was going. It sure seems like a lot of the contestants have good fanbases this year. I wonder if they will let us know how close the vote comes during the finals. I just hope there isn't a shocker with all these fanbases fighting each other. At least Maks was back both on the special and the 100th episode. I have seen Maks and the other guys in that commercial. It was so nice to see them even though that one bugs me too. I'm sure people would really say that, LOL! ~ Linda

    Ballroom

Kristi...very nice, fun, full of engery with a smooth lift...loved the dance

Mario...love the kid's spirit and the dance was elegant....nice lift

Marissa...she is committed to this and is having fun

    Jason...interesting music...good posture, great dance

Cristian...wonderful choreography and execution...really liked the dance. I know he has the Doc's okay for this, but I hope the dancing doesn't worsen the arm.

    Latin

Kristi...the dance didn't wow me, but I liked it and the spins were great.

Mario...one fun dance...of course, I really like watching the Jive. Good job.

Marissa....okay, Len, do you want raunchy or not?? Make up your mind. lol. She likes what she's doing and having fun with it, has really improved and learned, but I think she's the one who will be leaving this week.

Jason...wasn't the best J&E dance and I hated the music.

Cristian...Good job! Fun dance and nice ending.

All in all I think the Ballroom Round was better than the Latin Round. Learning two dances in a few days is hard.

Looking forward to the 100th Show tonight!!! And, I expect Marissa will be leaving.

    Thanks for the recap, Linda.

  • Looks like you really enjoyed the Ballroom round. It was the better round, and I go along with everything you said. I also agree with you on Cristián and his arm. I just hope he doesn't overstress it with all this dancing. I didn't think Kristi's samba was as good as others but I did like the spins and that is something Kristi can do well. Loved Mario's jive. Sometimes, Len just doesn't make sense. With Mario it was too raunchy, now here with Marissa it isn't enough. She is really having fun with all the dances and has improved. Jason's Tango was the better dance. The music I always remember hearing in the original ''The Pink Panther'' movie. That song was sung a lot in that movie so I was used to it. The one that got me was ''Beat It'' for a Tango. Cris did another good job, I agree. Yeah, I think that learning two dances in such a short time is the real problem. One dance has to suffer. The 100th Show was sure packed full. I thought Marissa was going too. You did a pretty good recap on the dances yourself, Tori. ~ eom. Linda

I would vote Marissa out next, and then Jason.   I was SOOOOOO glad the judges finally paid attention to his stiffness and posing and general awkwardness and marked him down for the Samba!    He has some nice lines and I usually am glued to watching Edyta when they're dancing as he just poses and she dances.   But when you just watch him, it's not very good dancing imo.

Also, I was glad that Cristian did so well.    He has very good musicality and movement imo and I would put him in second place behind Kristi myself.   Mario is very good with those two things too, but not quite as crisp as Cristian imo.   I don't know how well he will be able to keep going with that arm though.   OW!

I couldn't figure out what bugged Carrie Ann so much about Kristi and Mark's Samba.    I loved it.

  • That's the way I would have done it. It seemed that the judges were pickier with these performances because they are at the quarterfinals. Maybe they thought that Jason would have lost some of that awkwardness by now but they still should have said something before. I think Jason improved as far as he can. Cristián did very well. I was surprised, too, that he did as well as he did. I hope that he doesn't overstress his arm by doing this. What was with CA about K&M's Samba anyway? I loved it too. It had a lot of energy! I didn't notice that they were off timing at all. ~ eom. Linda
