Clotheslines... Do you or don't you?

I have always loved air-dried sheets and towels. We haven't had a clothesline for 10 years. When we moved into this neighborhood, I noticed nobody has them, so I figured when the subdivision was developed, it was a no-no.

However, I'm tired of wasting the sunshine. I got the one pictured above from Sears, and we hung it today. I have towels out there now, and the sheets are in the wash. I figure since it's retractable, and with the costs of energy being what they are, nobody ought to fuss. If they do, I'll fuss back!

Not only will we not be running the dryer as much, we won't heat up the house as much, so should save on air conditioning. YAY!

When I was a kid, hanging wash was one of my favorite chores.

YES! I have a small one that I hang things that can't go into the dryer when the weather is warm. I love it. The clothes smell so good when they're dry.

Thinking about clothes air dried outside brings back a lot of great childhood memories.

I don't hang clothes outside to dry, but I do hang a lot of things in the laundry room to dry. Towels, sheets and underwear always go in the dryer though.

Going Green -- Good for you! We just got a new high effieciency dryer, but I think I would like to line-dry just for the fresh smell of the laundry. I never even considered a clothes-line when we moved into our new neighborhood, I just don't see them anymore. But I'm considering starting a new neighborhood trend after reading this post.

My 5 year old was working on a Kindergarten art project using clothes-pins, and he came home and asked me what they were, and what they were used for... the idea of drying clothes outside was so strange to him. :)

  • I really need to slow down when I type.... High ''Efficiency'' dryer...
  • I wouldn't be a bit suprised to see more cropping up around here. If I wear my retractable one out, I'd like to get one of those square ones that you can stand in one place and spin. Mom had one of those, and it was great. And amazing how much we could get on there! Hope you are enjoying that new dryer! - Doopy

Definately Yay!! Even in the winter I use a wooden clothes dryin rack for alot of stuff... and always the towels!! I love scratchy towels! Plus I love hanging clothes on a clothes line...there is something meditative about it!! And the smell of sunshine is the best!

  • I used to do the wooden rack for a lot of stuff. I wonder when I got away from that... probably when the boys moved out and there was so much less laundry! You're right about the meditative part. I didn't realize I'd missed it so. - Doopy

I have no opinion because I wouldn't be able to hang them on the line.

When I was a kid, that was all we had. Outside in the warm weather, hung in the cellar during the cold or wet weather.

Even if someone did it for me, I wouldn't care one way or the other.

  • We hung things over the stair banister in the winter. That was how we 'humidified' the upstairs. We did have a dryer - what didn't go up there was dried in the machine. - Doopy

We have one for drying bathing suits and towels.     Otherwise I'll say NAY unless you are going to come and hang them out for me.    I do love the smell of some sheets that have air dried though and plan to do that the next time I wash them since you inspired me.   :-)

  • Yeah, I can see where it might not be so good for your back. But yeah, the sheets smelled soooo good last night. - Doopy

      hi Doopy  how are you?

A BIG YAY here.   I save so much moolah drying outside.    hanging a clothesline was the 1st thing we did 15 years ago when we bought this place.     I love having my clothes, towels and sheets air dry outside.

They always seem to smell fresher.
