Hey guys, just checking in for a minute to get facts, advice, and support from my favorite on line support group!   It's kinda long. . . here goes . . . Last week was a horrible week. Sunday I started feeling a little crampy. Between periods kinda thing. I've always had discomfort when ovulating. Monday it got worse. Tuesday evening I was doubled over on the floor in pain equivalent to labor pain. I'm not kidding. Because I was not running a fever or throwing up, I refused to go to the ER. I thought I would call my gyno the next morning. I did and he saw me immediately. He did a quick check and vaginal ultrasound. Everything looked good. Irritable bowel? Kidney stones, maybe? I already had an appt for that Friday with my family dr. (for a basic checkup) so I was told to keep it and see what he said. In the meantime the gyno ordered a KUB (x-ray of abdomen).

Thursday I was still in big time pain. 24-7 and feeling all bloaty. It would flare up occassionaly to where I couldn't move, but then go down to where I could still feel it but was functional. The gyno prescribed some Lortabs while we tried to figure it out. Thursday evening I went to one of those community med places (ours is called HealthPlus). I thought if I had some type of urinary or bladder infection the sooner I got an antibiotic the better. Nothing showed up. No blood or infection in urine. Finally it's Friday. Go to the family doc. KUB came back OK. No kidney stones. No bowel infection. Blood work normal. Meanwhile I'M STILL IN LOTS OF PAIN! Someone just find it! So he scheduled a CT scan for tomorrow. Well . . . too late. This past Friday evening I had another episode to where I was on the floor screaming in pain. SO took me to the ER. They did a CT scan. Ta-Da! An ovarian cyst. Had the gyno found that first it would have save me ALOT of money. So I call him today to give him the news and to see what to do about it. He had the NERVE to say 'I really don't see how an ovarian cyst could cause you that much pain. It must be something else'. A TYPICAL MALE! (sorry, Rusty)  He was supposed to look at the CT scan today and he did, but we played phone tag all day. I'll talk to him tomorrow.

So . . . what do you think??? Ever had an ovarian cysts or know someone who has? I have talked to several people who also had very painful OCs. Surely in his 25 years as a gyno he has seen painful ovarian cysts. Plus, what you read online makes light of it, too. But I'm telling you, I am NOT exaggerating this pain when I say equivalent to being in labor.

I know NOTHING.

I have not experienced any of what you mentioned - but, that childbirth thing - that I must have forgotten because I did it more than once....

What KILLLS me about your story is -

HELLO?  mom of young children goes to the hospital to seek emergency room attention FOR HERSELF....is  ALLL that needed to be said about the depth of that pain.

and his response?  attempts to cover his butt by diminishing your need for emergency  treatment - ERRRRR....DOCTORS!!!!

Keep us up to date on this....

  • Tell me about it! I have a very high tolerance for pain and trust me, the ER is the last place I want to be on a Friday night. I'm on colon meds for 4 days and then supposed to call back with an update. Please say a little prayer! - jobo

I had a colonoscopy this morning and it all started out w/ pain in my left side.   Although mine never got bad like yours.   And I should have had the thing done years ago.     Poor you!   So are they going to do the surgery soon to take the cyst out?     Hope you get relief soonest!

  • That's the route we are going now! The colon! Although a colonoscopy has not been ordered yet. The gyno put me on colon meds and in 4 days I'm to check in with an update. Then he wants to send me to a gastrologist. I am getting so frustrated. I have insurance but still have to pay 30%. My bills are gonna be outrageous! Thanks for checking in. - jobo

I have no experience with them but I'm wondering if that was the kind of attack a friend of ours had here the other night?  All of a sudden she had a pain on her left side, very low and said it felt like someone was stabbing her there.

She could barely sit down and then could barely stand up.  She walked around a little bit and it eventually subsided.  We wondered at the time if she had dislodged a kidney stone or something.

    Hope you're all better now!

  • When mine subsides it is still there, just not at it's full peak. I had another episode this morning that last about 10 minutes to where I was curled up in bed and simply could not move. I tried to stay calm and wait it out. I hope your friend is OK. - jobo

I had an ovarian cyst in '83. There is no way to describe the pain.

I will spare you the details of my experience until after you've recovered. I had the cyst removed and lost an ovary. The doc told me the pain was because the cyst has twisted.

All situations are different. Good luck. We can compare notes later.

  • Well, now he says it is the colon (maybe). Great...all I need is for the cyst to rupture ON TOP of this colon stuff for double the pain, if that is possible. I just want to get back to normal. This is really wearing me down. Thanks for replying! - jobo

I haven't (knock on wood) but my younger sister used to get them ALL of the time and yes, extremely painful.

{{{hugs}}} I hope you feel better asap.

  • Everyone I talked to says they are painful, but my doc said they are only painful when they rupture and mine in intact. So now they are going the colon route. Thanks for replying - jobo

Rest assured, I had ovarian cysts when I was 20 and was bent over in pain as well.  I had my first child at 25 and labor and delivery was NOTHING compared to those cysts.  At first the ER thought it was my appendix, so they did surgery and found the cysts and took the appendix anyway.  Two for the price of one???  I was HURTING....good luck on your recovery.  It's not in your mind...it's in your ovaries, I hear ya'!  ~AV~

  • Why was my gyno so quick to write it off as something else? His pride???? Because he didn't catch it on the Wednesday I went to him first??? Thanks for sharing your story. - jobo
  • Perhaps since your white blood count wasn't high, he thought it could not be cysts? Seems to me that it may not be high until they actually burst and get the infection into your bloodstream. How are you today? Any better? ~AV~
