I have a couple coming for dinner on Saturday night and the guy is on a very strict NO CARB diet.  (So far he has lost 20 kilos - I think that's about 45 pounds!)  Has anyone got any ideas/recipes for starters  and main meals?

Even maybe some ideas for the pre dinner drink snacks too?

I've tried googling but I'm struggling to find good dinner party ideas.  I can add sides with carbs in it for peter, me and his wife, and quite honestly he would probably eat whatever I dished up but I know what it's like to be on a diet and his wife said he is being so dedicated and I don't want to sabotage his eating plan.

Any ideas anyone?

If you don't mind something that can be a wee bit messy (if you're careless), Weezer's Buffalo Chicken Dip is THE bomb. And with celery sticks, it's pretty good as far as carbs go, I think. It's easy to make ahead and pop in the oven when you need to, or to transfer to a crock pot. Here's the direct link to the recipe page. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Buffalo-Chicken-Dip/Detail.aspx  This isn't her exact recipe, but is close... I have lots of men around me, and this is their top request these days. I've used canned chicken, and baked chicken breasts. I like it best with the canned...

  • Begs the question - where is Weezer?eom/WE
  • Ohhh that does sound good...... but I have no idea what ''canned chicken'' is? I don't think we can buy that here. is it like the consistency of say canned tuna. Could I poach some chicken breasts and shread them maybe? I will go to the supermarket and have a look in the international foods section. Thanks ~Blinky
  • It is similar to a rather large tuna can. I've done the baked and shredded stuff and it's ok, but the canned is a bit nicer consistency and is MUCH easier. We like it with tortilla chips or celery. I like it with baby carrots too. - Doopy
  • Oh, and I forgot to add. If you like it with a little more zip, substitute all or part of the ranch with bleu cheese dressing. - Doopy

I'd Google South Beach meals too.  Don't people on low-carb diets eat a lot of chicken?  Sorry I'm not much help but I wish you luck with the recipe hunt and have a fun dinner party!

  • Yeah his wife said that he eats heaps of chicken and salads. There are even certain veges (corn and peas I think) that he can't eat but salad seems ok. Considering it's just turned cold here now for our 6 week winter period that we have and all everyone wants is a steaming bowl of comfort mashed potatoes!!! LOL ~Aussie B
  • Blinky, you mentioned mashed potatoes, it may sound odd but check out the South Beach version (it's actually mashed CAULIFLOUR) , It REALLY tastes like mashed potatoes BUT you don't want to eat as many as you would if they WERE potatoes as they might cause a gas problem. Really, I was skeptical about the taste but I tried them and they taste remarkably like potatoes. It's hard to imagine winter right now as we are approaching HOT... LOL... /Gma b@s

or sites with recipes for Adkins diet and/or Southbeach diet...  Personally, I would tend to look at South Beach a little more.  Their diet plan is balancing GOOD carbs from Bad carbs so even if the food does have carbs in it, it's more likely to be the good kind.

  • Excellent! Thank you for the link. I forgot about South Beach as it's not really big over here. I'll go on the site and see what I can find. Thank you!!! ~Aussie B

I'd say check with his wife--she might know better what he can and cannot have and what he does like.
    Bon appetit!

  • I was talkng to her yesterday and she said it's basically no carbs. I just wanted to find some interesting dishes instead of cooking up a plain chicken breast or something. She said that if he has something that's not low carb then he just gets back into it the next day and because they know they are coming on Saturday night then he will probably stay very strict a couple of days before too. I don't think one night will make any difference to him, I just wanted to do something a bit different for us all to try. ~Aussie B
