Additional Comments:

Construction on the bridge structure that will replace the collapsed I-35W span started today.

Today crews will begin drilling a test shaft on the north side of the river using a diesel-powered drill rig. The process tests how deep crews must drill to support the bridge’s weight. Work hours stretch from Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m.–4:30 a.m.

Crews are also demolishing concrete this week on the south side of the Mississippi.

Next week, the construction team is scheduled to begin pile driving the “H” beams. The work should generate lots of noise, and work hours for pile driving are 7 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The bridge is scheduled to be open to traffic by Dec. 24, 2008.

I'm glad to hear they're starting work so quickly! Looks like a nice bridge--I'm surprised they came up with the plans so fast.

  • Within 3 months, the bridge collapsed, road re-routed, debris cleaned up, a call for construction bids, a decision and now construction. I wish all development moved that fast around here. eom Martimmy

  • I love how they're gonna spray paint everything white, south of the bridge! Strange, but hey. eom Martimmy

It's great that construction is beginning so soon. How close do you live to the area? Over the summer a portion of raised railroad track caught on fire here (burned for days about 3 miles from my house). Crews worked around the clock and we could hear them driving the piles into the ground over night. It's loud! At least they will have stopped work by the time you get home from work.

  • I'm about a mile upstream. I'm mostly excited about the jogging path reopening underneath. I've been bummed about not having that stretch. I've been forced to aim my river jogs toward the north a bit more which can get a bit industrial and scary. Not quite gentrified up there, yet. eom Martimmy
