Topic: This must be the cutest movie I've ever seen!

Additional Comments: I was all ready to go to bed on Sunday nite, but Turner Classic Movies started playing a silent film from 1927 called "Old Heidelberg" and I was completely enamored by it.

It's about a boy prince (nephew of a king) who gets jerked into the royal life as a boy, and feels secluded his whole life. But then, he goes off to military school, incognito, and finds friends and the love of his life. But the king becomes ill, and he has to leave to resume his royal duties as king. The movie is really fluffy and incredibly sweet. The Prince's smile (Ramón Novarro) is INTOXICATING, holy cow. The ending is a bit sad, which I loved.

Great attention to detail. Repeated themes, lines and visuals drive the plot along. Below, when Karl starts to fall for his Kathi, a popular barmaiden.

Well, I ordered the damned thing on VHS! I'll just have to watch it when I dust off my VCR from the closet when I watch my Bananarama and Passions tapes.

Which was subsequently remade into a movie musical in 1954 with Mario Lanza called ''The Student Prince'' which I happen to love!

  • I could check that out. But, I really loved the sub titles, the 20s film quality and the orchestral score a lot. Amazon has VHS copies for sale, no DVDs that I've seen. It'd be a great movie to play on wintery Sundays when I'm stuck inside. eom Martimmy
  • I'll keep my eyes open for the silent flick, too! (eom) Ms Lark
  • Yes! I remember that one!!!//Anne

  • He had tons of pancake on, I noticed. But the host of TCM mentioned some factoids before the movie, one of which was that many people thought the actor was too Latino looking to play a German Prince. So, they probably tried to downplay that with make-up. He's really cute, in a pretty sort of way. eom Martimmy
