Topic: Idol News - Finale Week - 5/19/08

Additional Comments:

We're down to the final two. It seems it's been a long time coming since everyone knew who the final two would be for awhile now. Nevertheless, there still are some news items swarming around, especially for David A. and his dad and the direction the show might go next year. I also have the latest list of Idol Appearances for the week and what one former Idol, not much in the news, is going to be doing.

I have show song spoilers too, which you can always skip if you don't want to know the songs. Right now they are just rumors but I will post the song list as soon as it comes in which will be sometime tomorrow before the show. Just check back.

As always, if there is something that you come across, post it here yourself.

Season 7 Finale Spoilers

http://mjsbigblog.com/season-7-finale-spoilers.htm

ETA: I’m still updating this list!

ETAA: Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson were just on Idol Tonight. They take back the whole “Knock Out” prediction. They both said, after they watched it on television, the performances were even. They think they may have even garnered some sympathy votes for Cookie…

I’m collecting finale spoilers in this thread. If you find anything good, post it!

More For Wednesday:

* ZZ TOP WILL BE PERFORMING WITH DAVID COOK * GRAHAM NASH Performing “TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL” with BROOKE WHITE * DAVID ARCHULETA PERFORMS WITH ONE REPUBLIC

* While many of the ex-Idols have been invited back for the finale, many in the Top 24 have not…
* Seal will perform, according to the FOX report.
* Bryan Adams is rumored to be performing.
* Donna Summer and ZZ Top are performing according to this. Yay?
* “Other rumors include a performance by the Jonas Brothers and perhaps a gift from his pop holiness, Kanye West. We’ll see…” From here.
* Jason Castro has a clue for one of the guest stars, he says that one was known as “codename Virgin Airlines”
* Uhm. The biggest star in the world is George Michael.
* Adam Cook will be in the audience tonight.
* The So You Think You Can Dance dancers will be performing on Wednesday’s finale
* Two Idols from each of the previous six seasons will come back to perform a group number. Hooray! Bo Bice has already confirmed. Yahoo.
* Carrie Underwood will perform her new single “Last Name”, according to her My Space.
* There’s going to be another “Dead Elvis” video (last year, Celine Dion sang a “duet” with Elvis Presley), this time including several people, per Nigel on KISS.
* Paula Abdul will debut a song from her upcoming album, and the Top 12 will also be performing alongside Paula for a special group number. Yahoo.
* The band One Republic (responsible for the mega-hit “Apologize”. Ryan Tedder from the band recently wrote for Clay Aiken and Blake Lewis) canceled a gig in order to be available for the finale. Daily Press
* Nigel Lythgoe says the kids will be singing 8 new songs tonight. The Top 5 have duets, except for Jason Castro who will be singing “Hallelujah” by himself. David Archuleta and David Cook will sing a duet–at first it was going to be “Homeward Bound” but they decided on “Hero” from Spiderman (Cookie suggested it). Nigel says “the most famous star in the world” may not be a musician. From an interview with Nigel and the Davids this morning on KISS.
* Tonight’s “Dead Elvis” virtual reality video features people who are very much alive, according to TMZ: “The finale will include a virtual hologram of Gladys Knight singing “Midnight Train to Georgia” with Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Downey Jr. singing backup as the Pips.” Jordin Sparks will also be performing.

Don't let the sun go down on me - Archie

Songwriters

Dream Big - Cookie Rocked out with a guitar
In this moment - Big ballad for archie

Personal
Collective soul song - Cookie - Played guitar
Imagine - Archie - song was changed up a little

This is mj from MJSBIGBLOG. As soon as my site calms down I'll post more there
The setup was like a boxing match. The Davids came out in boxing gloves and robes. Archie is in this too win. He was very emotional after every song. Cookie held back a little

American Idol Final 2 Spoilers Recap - Cookie sings U2, Archie Reprises “Imagine”

http://mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-final-2-spoilers-recap-cookie-sings-u2-archie-reprises-imagine.htm

Let’s re-organize the information we have, shall we?

Song Spoilers:

* Personal song choices have leaked: David Archuleta will reprise “Imagine” per Nigel Lythgoe Thursday on Ryan Seacrest’s KISS morning show. David Cook will sing a new song, U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, per a report on FOX news. Cookie is the first Idol to get a U2 song cleared for competition.
* The Davids picked their own coronation song from the 10 most popular songs in the list of 20 that were available for online voting, per Nigel. How’s that for a twist? We don’t know which song either contestant has chosen yet.
* Clive Davis chose a song for the Davids. There are rumors swirling about, but there are no clear choices yet. I’ll bet the picks are AWESOME! /sarcasm

  • does the U2 song clearance imply respect/admiration for DC? I'm a big U2 fan, this makes me quake in my shoes as I often find DC---unsettling. he surprises me sometimes, though. vh

A few other news items came in like the one with Simon below and the update on the song list above. The item, here, is a comment on the link to Simon's video below. I thought that it was an interesting comment:

"Nigel said recently in an interview that both David’s are getting a record deal. The show winner gets a more restrictive contract (and about $500,000-$600,000 in endorsements/deals as a result: at least Taylor did allegedly)

So, do you want David Cook doing the craptacular talk show/private concert circuit, while trying to get out his 1st album, or do you want David Archuleta to do it? Think male Miley Cyrus.

The kid has Disney Channel written all over him. Clean cut, tweens luv him, and he can sing Disney-style music. Face it: Cook Deserves to win like Taylor did in a small way: he paid his ‘dues’ on the road, sure. But do you REALLY want him to have to answer the same questions over and over and OVER instead of having quality time to get his music together? I don’t.

Be careful what you wish for.

    What do you think?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Ah, but unlike Miley, DA can actually sing! U R right, tho, he's perfect for Disney. I can hear him sing all those Lion King and cartoon soundtrack songs. vh
  • I haven't heard Miley sing much except for on IGB, but David A. does seem perfect for Disney. So where does the AI part come in? Thinking about this, it almost sounds as if they should award them both. David A. gets the Teenage AI award and David Cook gets the regular AI award. How about that for an idea? ~ eom. Linda

Simon Cowell guests on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno

    * Simon says Fantasia’s performance last Wednesday was like one of those joke first-round auditions
    * Simon is taking the fall for Paulagate. Interesting
    * He doesn’t care who wins, but if he had to pick someone, he’d pick David Cook, because he’s been around for awhile, he’s paid his dues.

  • I forgot to add that I saw this last night and his reaction to Fantasia was funny. He still thinks that she is a great singer. It was interesting about how he says it was his fault for Paula's confusion the night she reviewed Jason's second song when he hadn't sung it yet. ~ eom. Linda

The Final 2 - What Should the Idols Sing?

    http://mjsbigblog.com/the-final-2-what-should-the-idols-sing.htm

ETA: Nigel Lythgoe releases a few more spoiler details in an interview with Ryan Seacrest this morning on KISS:

    * David Archuleta will sing “Imagine” (there is also a rumor that Clive’s choice for Archie is “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”. He chose not to spoil any of David Cook’s songs. Since Cookie’s camp is sealed up tight as a drum, we probably won’t know the songs until they are leaked right before the broadcast.
    * The Top 2 were able to pick their own coronation song from the Top 10 vote getters of the Idol Songwriters contest. There were only 20 songs total to begin with. Some “contest”, huh? Think TPTB didn’t like the song that got the most votes? They just changed the rules of the game midstream. Makes it hard to do the contest again next year, don’t you think?
    * There’s going to be another “Dead Elvis” video (last year, Celine Dion sang a “duet” with Elvis Presley), this time including several people.
    * The “biggest star” in the world will be there. Whatever!

    More spoilers

  • Gag me if Beyonce is on yet another show performing
  • Frankly, they only have input on one song.......their personal choice. I have no idea what they should sing. Possibly a 'reprise' of one of their better songs with a slightly different spin OR a totally new song!! /sb
  • toriboy--Are you thinking of her as the ''biggest star in the world''? That could be. Who it can be is still being discussed, but you might have something there. One suggestion was Robert Downey, Jr. but why would he be on a singing show? Another thing that is on that new update I put on. ~ eom. Linda
  • You've got your wish either way. Look at above updated information. ~ eom. Linda
  • who got their wish? LOL you talking to the other poster? Anywho Beyonce is pretty big but then again last year their bit surprise was Bette Middler LOL, wo who knows what they consider the biggest star I dont think anything could ever top the surprise of Prince
  • Well according to an article i read the Biggest star in the world is inside
  • toriboy--I'm sorry. I meant that ''You've got your wish'' remark for songbird. I forgot to put her name in the response. Look at her response under your Beyonce one at the top and you will understand what I meant. As for the 'biggest star in the world'--I'm with you. I didn't know he was that. I like some of his stuff too but I hadn't heard of him much until he was the plot point of the main character on 'Eli Stone'. But to coincide with the start of his tour? That sounds about right. Don't they do anything for publicity when these people want to promote a tour? I guess AI is reaching for anything if this is true. ~ eom. Linda

A Roundup of Season 7 Finale Spoilers

    http://mjsbigblog.com/a-roundup-of-season-7-finale-spoilers.htm

    * David Archuleta and David Cook will perform 3 songs according to reliable spoilers on Idol Forums. One will be picked by Clive Davis. One will be chosen by the contestants–either a reprise of a song already sung during the season, or something new. The third song will be whatever ghastly song wins the Idol Songwriters Contest. There are rumors swirling that there will be a twist regarding the coronation song. Maybe there will be two winning songs? Perhaps re-arrangements by the contestants will be allowed? Hopefully both Cookie and Archie will be handed songs they can make their own.
    * Paula Abdul will debut a song from her upcoming album, and the Top 12 will also be performing alongside Paula for a special group number.
    * Two Idols from each of the past 6 Seasons of Idol will be appearing on the finale.
    * Jason Castro told an interviewer from the TV Guide channel that each of the Top 5 will duet alongside a special celebrity guest.
    * The Jonas Brothers will be appearing.
    * The band One Republic canceled a gig in order to be available for the finale.
    * There was a rumor floating about that Bryan Adams would be one of the celebrity guests.

DAD WON'T QUIT ARCHULETA FATHER SEEN COACHING FROM AUDIENCE

    New York Post

"During a segment of the show not seen on TV this week, host Ryan Seacrest held a coin toss to determine who - Archuleta or rival David Cook -would get to sing first in next week's big finale.

The winner of the toss gets to choose.

As most fans know, the contestant who gets to close the show usually has an advantage.

Archuleta won the toss, and as the young singer stood on stage pondering his decision, his father was seen standing on his seat and screaming from the audience, "Second! Second!" "

Today, in TV Guide Magazine it says that JA just held up two fingers. The coin toss was taped and will air on tomorrow night's show. I guess we will see if we can hear his dad yelling from the audience or not.

Was Jeff Archuleta Banned from Idol for Trying to Make a Side Deal?

We told you last week that Jeff Archuleta had been banned from backstage at Idol for various reasons, including TMZ’s story that he cost the show lots of money when he changed some lyrics to son David Archuleta’s song. The National Ledger now reports that the last straw that got Stage Dad from Hell banned was the fact that he tried to make a side deal with one of Idol’s sponsors while they were on a video shoot. Apparently, Jeff may have tried to get an endorsement deal for David and harassed the sponsors. Sounds like Ford to us, as that's the only video shoot the contestants do each week.

Upfronts: A New and Improved American Idol?

When “American Idol” returns for its eighth season in January, it will still be a singing competition. But get ready for some significant changes in terms of how the show is produced.

Acknowledging that he’s not pleased with the performance of the show this year, Fox Chairman Peter Liguori told reporters during a conference call Thursday that he has met with the show’s producers and “everyone is really committed and excited” to revamp the show next year.

Let’s put it in some context. …It’s not like it’s in the death throes here,” he said. “There’s some real charm in that cast. Whether it’s caught the world on fire, I don’t know. Some of it is just natural maturity of the show. It’s been a phenomenon, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t go through some natural aging just like any other show. We’ll do some of those creative twists next season, and we’ll see what comes out of it.”

Liguori also said that the Wednesday results show will, at least on most weeks, go back to a half-hour. One thing that won’t change: the people sitting at the judges table.

“We love Paula,” Liguori said, responding to a question. “She’s coming back.”

‘American Idol’: How to Fix It

Something is wrong with American Idol, and here’s the surprise: American Idol knows it. It’s not the ratings; they’re down, but after nearly six years, a plunge was inevitable. And it’s not the contestants: Some past seasons may have showcased more talent, but this year’s final sing-off on May 20 will almost surely be livelier than last year’s Jordin-Sparks-vs.-beatbox-guy minor-league championship, or 2006’s clash of the titans between Soul Patrol and McWhatshername.

Is 'American Idol' ready to make changes?

    http://blog.zap2it.com/americanidol/2008/04/is-american-ido.html

This is an article that ML originally posted and I thought that it would be good to post it again. The article basically talks about an online survey that was done recently asking people to vote on changes that they might like to see on the show. I had never read the article before today but had heard of this survey. At the end of this article, the reporter asks people to "Sound Off" on changes they would like to see on the show. There are about 24 comments on the board. Some are short and some are a little longer. There was a good number of them that want to can the auditions at the beginning and do more with the Hollywood auditions, change the Results show to a half hour and do something about that mosh pit with the waving arms. If you don't have the time to sit and read them all, read a few of them whenever you have time. They are interesting. I posted some excerpts taken from different comments. Each grouping is from an individual poster.

"One vote per phone number would be good. This way it will eliminate the "Vote For The Worst" people as well as the crazy teenies voting for the cutest guy a thousand times."

"And I kind of liked the theme nights like they had in the first season, with different decades each week. It was cool. I loved Big Band Week. I still have "Stuff Like That There," with Kelly Clarkson on my iPod."

"I think it would be better to have each theme be by music genre instead. Top 40 night, country music night, Broadway night..."

"The Judges need to pick the bottom three and then let the voters choose which should go, this way there aren't great contestants sent home early just because the teen girls think the cute kid who can only sing ballads is cute."

"Less phone in voting and more input from judges - the phone in voters are what is turning it into a popularity contest."

"Less phone in voting, limit it to the number of contestents on that night. Limit text messaging to one text."

There are a lot more with more suggestions. So whenever you have a few minutes, read through them.

”American Idol”: When You Wish Upon Two Stars -

    Entertainment Weekly

I found these paragraphs especially funny and true. This was about Syesha--

"Randy pretty much foreshadowed Syesha's exit during Tuesday night's performance show when, after her fine cover of Alicia Keys' ''If I Ain't Got You,'' he praised her late-season surge and declared, ''That's why you're standing there at No. 3!'' At No. 3? Um, Randy, didn't you mean as part of the final three? Our votes count, right? You guys don't have all this mapped out back when you name the final 24, do you?"

"...I grew to admire her over the last 13 weeks. For starters, she showed amazing restraint by not hurling her microphone at the judges on Tuesday after they criticized her for performing a forgettable dance track from the Happy Feet soundtrack that had been assigned to her by the show's producers. (As a reader named Coolkid asked on our EW.com message boards, ''Why didn't the producers improve Hell's Kitchen's ratings by having a 'Slice-up Syesha' challenge on their next episode? It's basically what they're doing already!'')"

    And Fantasia --

"... let me just say this about my all-time favorite Idol. Yes, her screechy performance of ''Bore Me (Yawn),'' and her sculpted fuchsia tresses, and her skintight black bodysuit, were all a hot, hot mess. But she also brings such an unbelievable energy to the stage, an unvarnished, slightly maniacal, and completely un-self-conscious commitment to her performances, that I just can't help adoring her. Accuse me of overdosing on 'Tasia Kool-Aid all you want, but anyone who can terrify the Swaybots (TM) into stunned silence has got to be doing something right."

Taylor Hicks prepares for Broadway role in ‘Grease’

Taylor Hicks will make his Broadway debut on June 6, playing Teen Angel in “Grease” at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

Taylor Hicks said being in New York for three months will allow him to continue working on his next CD. He’s been writing songs and recording demos in Nashville, Hicks said, and hopes to release a new single in the fall.

The Hoover native and former “American Idol” winner, 31, will perform in the musical through Sept. 7. Hicks plans to announce his Broadway run on television this morning, on NBC’s “The Today Show.”
“I’m honored for the opportunity to experience Broadway,” Hicks said Thursday. “I feel blessed and excited.”

He’ll appear in one number in the musical, singing “Beauty School Dropout.” That’s traditional for his character, a hip guardian angel who makes a showy appearance in Act II, offering advice to a teen named Frenchy.

“This particular part, Teen Angel, really allows me to put my toe in the water and test the waters,” Hicks said. “I’ve always been a little over the top, so this is perfect for me.”
