When Will Canceled TV Shows Leave the Air?

By Chrissy Le Nguyen | Monday, December 8, 2008, 1:42 PM

Christian Slater in "My Own Worst Enemy"
NBC/Paul Drinkwater

The Fall 2008 TV season, now nearing its end, left most viewers far from impressed. The only standout new series is CBS' crime procedural "The Mentalist," which became the highest-rated new show of the season and has made its star, Simon Baker, one of the comeback kids of '08. But in spite of dismal ratings, the majority of these series garnered a good million or so viewers. For those who enjoyed Christian Slater's move to the small screen in "My Own Worst Enemy" or ABC's sophomore shows -- "Pushing Daisies," "Dirty Sexy Money," and "Eli Stone" -- these cancellations can be alarming and especially annoying when you're really invested in a particular TV show. Attempting to find out exactly when the canceled shows will air its last few episodes can confuse the situation even more. To ease you into the reality that you're going to have to break up with a show you've just started to get involved with, we've put together a list of the current season's canceled TV series which includes information on how many remaining episodes will air when:

ABC

"Dirty Sexy Money" – 5 episodes

"Eli Stone" – 7 episodes

"Opportunity Knocks" – 6 episodes

"Pushing Daisies" – 5 episodes

CBS

"The Ex List" – 0 episodes

The CW

"Easy Money" – 0 episodes

"Valentine" – 0 episodes

"In Harm's Way" – 0 episodes

FOX

"Do Not Disturb" – 0 episodes

NBC

"My Own Worst Enemy" – 2 episodes

"Lipstick Jungle" – 3 episodes

"Crusoe" – 6 episodes

"Knight Rider" – 17 episodes:

Okay, Mr. Dax Know-it-All ;-P ... this is from an article on zap2it.com Friday, 12/12:

"Lipstick Jungle has been on quite the roller coaster ride for the last month, being canceled and then revived, and subsequently shuffled to two different time slots in four weeks. Despite these trials, however, the show has been creatively triumphant and, according to the NBC promo department, will be back in the new year with new episodes for us to enjoy. Merry Christmas, Lipstick Jungle fans!"

  • Dax) 'back in the new year with new episodes' - yes, one on the 2nd, one on the 9th. And then they're out, and it's over.
  • Those 'new episodes' are part of the original 13 order anyway, aren't they, so it isn't like NBC ever ordered 'additional' episodes beyond when they initially renewed the show for this season, months ago. No back 9. The ratings continue to be absolutely terrible. This past week's demos were just pathetic. I'm sorry about this, because the show is so hilarious to watch in its awfulness. Oh, well. eom/lisa3

Brooke Shields was on with Craig Ferguson last night. I think the show was taped yesterday. She said the Lipstick Jungle sets were still up, and it didn't sound like it was a done deal yet, although with the Leno thing, it's probably gone.

  • It is also hard to believe that there is no future of the show, when the network keeps talking about upcoming stuff & a new season! If the show isn't coming back, then why advertise that it is?! eom
  • Dax) They're doing nothing to advertise or promote or discuss a new season. There won't be one.

I'm sorry to see "Pushing Daisies" go.  I like "Eli Stone" well enough, but rarely watch it.

The sad thing is that none of these will likely be replaced by anything better.

Did NBC really thing "Crusoe" would work?  And on Friday nights at that?

In both daytime & primetime, an audience of a million is NOTHING!  I'm surprised some of these cancelled shows have lasted as long as they have.  I like some of them, but they don't strike me as shows that were ever expected to last.

  • Does anybody else here remember the early days of TV? Gee whiz, I can only imagine what A MILLION VIEWERS would have done for a show back then! Whew, it would have been AMAZING. You're right, these days that's nothing. But to me, I'll always think of a million viewers as a heck of an audience. But I suppose they look at how many total TV viewers there are on a given night, and only a million of them is not much of audience. It's all relative, I think; if I were on TV and heard that 1,000,000 watched me, I'd go BANANAS! -Spell
  • Spell: ICAM, however, TPTB (Corp) are moved more by percentage of market share than actual numbers. If one million viewers represented 40 share of the market, they would be jumping for joy, but if they are striving for 40 share & that number is, say, 22 million, then a million isn't much to shout about. Remember, P&G said, in the 90's, that 3 million viewers weren't enough to move them to keep AW around. As I've said before, if I said that 3 million customers wanting me to open my doors for business wasn't enough to bother with, I would be considered insane! It is all relative. eom

Okay, when's the last time I told you we're separated-at-birth twins, Thalia??  I was just coming to post this article!  Though I was just going to post a link; I don't know how to reproduce the entire article, with photos.  How do you do that??

  • P.S. As for me ... *Dirty Sexy Money,* *Lipstick Jungle* and *Pushing Daisies* are the series I'm going to really miss, in that order. Last Wed I sat down to watch *Dirty* and it wasn't on (though listed in my TV Guide); I thought that was the end of it. So glad to read it'll still be on for a bit, and I hope they give it a chance to wrap up stories somewhat. Boy am I going to miss Donald Sutherland. Please give him another shot somewhere, networks! Plus, I think it's rotten *Lipstick* is being taken away from us adult soap lovers, and leaving us just the teenage primetime shows. Grrr ... -Spell
  • Dax) Dirty Sexy produced 13 (with some closure), but the Thanksgiving ep was skipped... nervous the last three are going to go unaired, too...
  • Hi Spell... just copied and pasted it here. Sometimes I can do that and other times not... Thalia
  • Billy Baldwin says there's still hope for DSM. Their sets are still intact and TPTB are holding onto their contracts. Here's hoping. eom/Hil
  • Don't count on DSM making it. This week's ratings are in, and yet again they are dreadful. Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, BTW, are two great adult soaps (way better than Lipstick Jungle, IMO) and then of course Gossip Girl is a brilliant teen soap, also One Tree Hill. eom/lisa3
