Wow, I really liked the show last night! Don't know if it was just my mood or what. They really changed up the music from the usual thoughtful, touchy-feely, sleep-inducing stuff; I felt more like I was watching an NFL highlights show! Sorta like a cop show I guess, with real urgency and that constant "boom, boom" to keep our blood pumping. No pun intended.
This really focused on what makes Dr. Shepard click, which I realized was sorely missing. But his meeting in the a.m. with The Boss should be interesting - wonder if he'll really be forced to fire him? I know the new system is really limiting him (which is taking a real toll on the poor guy; I'm sure he'll reach his breaking point before long).
They're really finding clever ways to keep the new Mrs. Shepard in the script. I sure hope their reason for her maternity leave will be believable.

What you've been seeing onscreen for the last few episodes basically IS Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave. They don't have to make up an excuse for Meredith to go anywhere. The last I heard is that she will appear in every episode, through a combination of pre-shot scenes and Pompeo going back to work earlier than expected. She gave birth last month and I believed returned to the set this past week.
Apparently, the liver-transplant was originally thought up to explain her absence--Meredith simply wouldn't have appeared for however many episodes during her recovery. But since they worked out the idea of taping ahead and Pompeo came back so soon, they've been able to have some Meredith scenes in each episode of what was supposed to be her absence.
I really miss Izzie. I want her back NOW! Not gonna happen this week, of course. :(
I can't stand any of the new characters. They were all obnoxious in their first episode, which I feel was a big mistake. Why should I like them? Maybe the one, what's her name who had the scenes with Alex this week, will eventually be decent, since I saw glimmers of hope this week, but the rest completely suck so far.
It was a very good episode, though! It was great to see a Derek-centric one, and that long surgery was just painful to watch. If they'd failed after all of that... Poor Cristina, she's so accustomed to succeeding and she had her troubles. Not a huge part for her in this episode, but a significant one.
I also liked the bit at the end where the Chief told Derek he was fired, and Derek replied so calmly. I wonder if the Chief will keep HIS job, the way he's going.
I actually had some interest in Arizona for one of the few times. I liked how she barred the Chief from interrupting Derek's surgery. The only other time I felt an interest in her was in a previous episode, in the scene where she explained why she was named Arizona. I don't feel like I know her, therefore I don't much care about her. That could change, though! An upcoming episode apparently will somewhat focus on her, I think, and I hope that helps a lot.

I knew Chandra was the director and I loved how she incorporated herself in, rightly so, very nicely. Seems with Heigl and Pompeo absent (or soon to be) they may do episodes like this featuring some of the others as well. Loved Arizona going as rogue as Derek then crying on Callie's shoulder.
Chief was tops. Little Grey? Perfect. Karev and new intern? Loving them, too. A very interesting piece of work that's propping this show. Not a dull moment where there have been some moments in the last few seasons that lacked.
