Michael, you are going home!  That was absolutely NOT necessary.  It was done in such a way as to fake Michael and everyone  else out for a brief moment.  It would be one thing to have let him go and then mention they didn't do it last year during this kind of a week, but, that they couldn't do it this year.....But the key word is AFTER they said he had to go home.

Having said this what the heck???????????????????????  This guy is so talented and has the kind of quality that is appealing and he doesn't get enough votes?!  I'm thinking and hoping he'll do fine because he can really sing.  Good luck to him.  And yes, it was a surprise that he was let go!

Now back to the elimination.  I don't think the drama factor was necessary at the moment when someone was being eliminated and Ryan said those words.  Whoever's idea it was and why the idea wasn't nixed is a big puzzle.  This wouldn't have been fair to anyone who was supposed to be going home.  It almost seemed like there was a tiny glimmer of hope on Michael's face and then the big let down!

And it was also the way it was done! After eliminating Michael, Ryan even said that last year's Idol Gives Back nobody was sent home, but that 'tonight Michael, you are going home!'. That was just cruel and unnecessary! He was obviously shocked, as was everybody else. That is not the way to send people home. No need it twisting the knife!

I agree that Ryan was very cruel.  During the Idol gives back show last year they kept all the finalists dangling until the end of the show, and then announced that there would be no elimination.  I thought  that was cruel and was happy to see that this year they announced the elimination show would be Thursday.  At least the contestants had another night without elimination worry.   Then Ryan turns around and it a creep at the end of the show last night.

  • Ryan may not have a choice. He's probably told how to do this elimination weekly. TPTB on Idol are getting carried away with wanting to show how shocking they can be, but they've crossed to line to tacky, tastless, and cruel, IMO!//Karen

I agree it was unnecessary and just plain mean for Ryan to use that as a lead up to the big farewell. I thought it was uncommonly hurtful, especially after what appeared to everyone as a shocking elimination. You could hear a pin drop in that place.

I'm sad to see Michael go since I thought he was one of the most natural performers and entertainers on the show, and definitely one of the best singers. I'm pretty confident that a record deal will find him though.
