Way back in the day, I had been watching Sisters for George Clooney's character, Falconer.  They blew him up and I was royally peeved.  I was not going to get hooked on a show or character  again.  My roommates and mother told me about ER and all the cute guys on the show, but I refused to watch.  After the show had been on for a few weeks, my mom mentioned Anthony Edwards by name, and I had to tune in.  I absolutely loved AE in Gotcha!, a silly, fun movie when he had a glorious head of blonde hair.  (Ah, and those lovely brown eyes.)  So, there I was hooked again.  What a show, what a cast.

This show has excelled in portrayingg desperate struggle and the long climb to acceptance and overcoming with a singular  eloquence and the respect due the issues.

I have a few favorites. These are the ones that first came to mind but I'm sure I forgot a ton of other great stories and scenes.

Favorite Stories:
Luka & Abby, except when they broke up and also when she had the affair. :( So, Luka and Abby when they were happy!
Mark Green having surgery and recovering from the brain tumor (or rather, seeming to recover). I wanted him to be okay!
Carter's arc, where he gradually rose to the rank of attending
Abby getting to return to medical school and becoming a doctor
Benton winning custody of his son and then allowing Roger to spend more time with him

Favorite scenes:
Luka's first scene, when he entered in the hospital in the midst of chaos and asked the little kid he was carrying, "Have you ever been to the circus?"
Malucci getting fired--he deserved it, so unprofessional!
The ending scene of one of Maggie's visits, when she and Abby went to the baseball game and watched Luka play
Doug Ross saving the little boy from the storm drain
Weaver coming out to Luka (who never dropped a word about her secret)
Everyone trying to figure out who wrote the book that was about the ER workers, only with disguised names
Jeannie admitting she was the HIV-positive staff member
The scene where the guy with Parkinson's started a patient's heart
Carter cleaning out Mark's locker, finding Mark's stethoscope, and putting it around his own neck
Lots of Romano's scenes, like the one where he told Elizabeth that Mark was on his way to the church for the wedding, the one where he brought his dog to the hospital for an operation, where he met Elizabeth's mother and promptly inserted his foot in his mouth, where he used sign language to tell little Reese to take care of his father (Benton), etc.
Carter, missing med-school graduation because he was staying with a sick, frightened child
Luka beating up the guy who punched Abby

My all-time-favorite moments from this show are real tearjerkers (and I've kept them on tape - yes, just these moments, not the whole shows themselves!):

Jeannie Boulet talking with little Scottie Anspaugh, who had terminal cancer and whose dad (the Chief) wanted him to keep up his long battle with it.  As he lay in his hospital bed Jeannie gently asked him what he really wanted himself.  He tearfully told her, "No more chemo."  (I'm tearing up just thinking about it.)

The horror of Carter and Lucy being stabbed by that madman in another room during a staff party, unbeknownst to everyone else; then, in the next episode, Kerry and Romano desperately trying to save Lucy, to no avail.  This actually underscored to me how people don't always slowly fade away like in all the cornball movies, they can just disappear a moment after talking to you.  Life is just so fleeting, so delicate.  This show was the first to be so true to life.

Carter reading Mark's goodbye letter to the staff.  Priceless.

Going way back ... Carol standing at the medicine cabinet as she tells Doug, "you had your chance" and he gives her some flippant retort.  Then she purposefully steals some drugs, goes home and overdoses.  The look on Doug's face as she's wheeled into the ER.

I'm sure there are more!

  • Whoops - I just realized, these certainly aren't SHALLOW memories! Hope you don't mind, vh! -Spell
  • oh, no, it started out as shallow (hottest, etc, then I went off on a tangent. I meant to change the title b4 I posted, but 4got. Loved the Jeanie scene with Scottie, too, also when she sang at his memorial-was going to sing Shakers Promise (Tis a Gift), but sang Green Day's Time of Your Life. I know there are a thousand scenes and characters I've forgotten, everyone, please post whatever has moved you over the years. If it's something eloquent or shallow, no problem. vh
