Topic: Passions Canceled

Additional Comments: So I know this board is almost dead but I just wanted to know how people felt about this subject. Sad because the soap genre is in decline? Or glad because it replaced Sunset Beach but was never as good even when Beach was at its worse?

Soaps are in decline. 15 years ago YandR still managed a 9.0 rating on occasion, ..by the time Passions debuted in 1999, YandR was down to about 6.4...with Pash around a 2.0.

8 years later and YandR as the highest rated daytime soap (by now a dubious distinction) is packing less than a 4. All the other soaps have dropped to such low numbers that any one of them would have been on the block for cancellation if they were alone in pulling in such dismal ratings, but in this case there is safety in (low) numbers. I guess they can't cancel any one soap based on nielsons now because that would be just cause for pulling all the soaps off the air then. Only BandB is consistently over a 2.5 along with the aforementioned YandR. Passions is still doing decently (1.5).. since it was almost always the lowest rated soap, its numbers have declined only marginally versus the MASSIVE drop for ALL soaps across the board.

I predict perhaps another couple cancellations in the next few years but that there will be 7 or 8 mainstays sticking around til the bomb drops on the world in 2012. I would say there is 100% probability that no new traditional style soaps will be launched in the future. NBC seems content to now only have Days on its roster, and even that giant posted a pitiful 1.7 recently as read in SOD magazine.

The show is moving to DirectTV, so it'll still be on. At least for a while longer. My favorites from the beginning were Timmy and Tabitha. Now I like Tabitha and Endora, any of the supernatural material, really. When the switch to satellite comes, though, I won't be able to watch anymore.

  • Also, Passions didn't ''replace'' Sunset Beach. It began to air in July 1999, and SUN was not cancelled for months later, with the final episode airing at the end of Dec. 1999. If anything, Passions ''replaced'' Another World. eom/lisa3

It is a combination of all those plus one more thing: Nobody watched. The low ratings are proof of that.

I started seeing Passions when Leigh Taylor-Young joined the cast.Of course,I started seeing Sunset Beach in the first place when I saw that Leigh was a regular.(My fondness for her goes back to Peyton Place.)When Leigh officialy left SB,so did I.When Leigh became a semi-semi regular in Passions I quit seeing it,although now that I know it's going off the air I'm seeing it on occasion.

It's great that I can communicate with others via Internet...others who know the same things I do-and even Leigh herself, who now knows me and appreciates my longtime fanship.

As for how good Passions is...I've seen better soaps. As for how good Leigh was in Passions...I've seen her in better things, including Sunset Beach.
