I had an early morning dental appointment this morning..infact it was still dark..six thirty in the morning were driving to  my dentist office. I had my third cleaning this year. The woman cleaning my teeth said something I've heard for a very long time and just now decided why she kept saying this particular thing.

"Take out your removeables." I say "Why do you keep calling my dentures "Removeables?"  she said "Some people are offended by that term "Dentures". I was stunned into almost silence. "Are you kidding me! Some people are offended by "Dentures?" Are some of us that thin sknned..insecure..vain about DENTURES!

When you reach a certain age..stuff shifts arround..lose hair, teeth, gain weight lose weight, need eye glasses..we AGE. When I was younger..I didn't take care of my teeth as well as I should have..time catches up to you and make you pay for being young and inexperienced.

I think this is taking political correctness too far. This was just too funny too me and I started to sound like Jay Leno when he heard something so stupid that it just boggles his mind.. when he yells "OH SHUT UP!"

If you're offened by this.. avoid this thread..lol! IT'S DENTURES! Good Grief Josephine! lol!

Glitter your post is right on and way past due.  I for one am sick to death of "political correctness".  People have become way too thin skinned.  I'm all for being sensitive and respectful to other people's feelings but like everything else... the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction.

Maybe it's just a catch-all for any "removeables", which she asks all patients. A couple of my kids wore braces (though not removeable back then), and so far all grandkids have worn some sort of "removeable" braces or spacers and I know some adults who wear them, too.

I crack up when I hear people refer to dentures as "false teeth." I have never heard the term "removables."

It's a euphemism, I guess, sort of like when someone dies and you say they 'passed'. I always think of passing gas when I hear that. Personally, I just say DEAD, but more often than not, people try to soften the blow by saying anything but 'died' or 'dead'. Same thing with dentures, I guess... people are trying to be sensitive.

Coming out of lurkerdom for a brief second.

I joke and say my teeth are like the stars, they come out at night. I wonder if that would offend anyone lol.

Thanks for the responses. I must say this morning was interesting..lol! "Removables"? We need to lighten up world..there's so much sadness on the news..but this morning what My dential hygenist said..floored me almost...lol! Maybe I should find a different word for her now..lol! One of the reasons why I was there other  than the cleaning: I sometimes floss too hard and injure my gums. I had radiating pain that was like felt like a bullet hit me in the face on my left side. It hurt like hell, kept me from sleeping at night.  In most cases, I just use my toothbrush to "Floss" I love that citrus Listerine mouth wash.

It seems to me that many individuals, and groups, actually look for ways to be offended.  And THAT offends me! LOL!  Our society has run completely off the rails in so many ways.

Same thing with hearing aids.  Why anybody would be embarrassed about wearing one amazes me.  All the ads say how 'invisible' they are etc.  So what, do you knock people who need glasses?  Same thing,  if you need one to hear....what's the big deal?  Same thing with dentures...back in the 'old days', dental care wasn't as advanced as it is today. Flouride, professional cleaning wasn't available when I was growing up...at least not in my rural home town.  So what if you need dentures?  People are way too sensitive.
