Topic: The quiet bus

Additional Comments:

You probably thought I was going to talk about nobody talking to each other on the bus, but not this time.

I was standing on the street today waiting for my bus and I realized that the buses that were driving by or stopping were rather quiet.  Then it hit me.  Plastered all over the side of the bus are the words HYBRID/ELECTRIC.  It never occurred to me that King County Metro would go green.  Good for them!

I really wish we had those here too. I take the bus every day, and although I'm doing my part to help the environment that way, it still would be nice to know that the busses I'm taking are more eco-friendly.

  • Do have underground bus tunnels? We have tunnels in Seattle so I am guessing they had to do that. Could you imagine an old diesel bus in a tunnel? The newer buses also have really comfortable seats which is really nice. rushlan
  • No, we don't. Just subways........DebS
  • I thought that the buses ran on fuel outside the tunnel and switched to electric in the tunnel? In any case, Seattle has a great commuter bus system, imo. I can't imagine how much heavier the traffic would be if they didn't.
  • I really don't know how the buses work, but that would make complete sense. I just noticed they went Hybrid/electric yesterday. I also agree that Seattle's public transportation system works well. I hear a lot of people complain, but I have so many options to get where I am going, I cannot even think about complaining. rushlan

I remember reading that the ones here in SF cost $480K each.  Somehow the kids have figured out a way of disabling them and they stop in the middle of the route.

It's very rare that I take a diesel bus.  I usually ride the electric ones or, as they were known in Philadelphia, "trackless trolleys".  My favorites are still the real trolleys that run along Market Street, right in front of where I live.

  • I am not shocked that they cost that much. I love the Market Street Trolley. I haven't been to San Francisco in a number of years. I should go for along weekend this year sometime. rushlan

Good for them! That will greatly improve the air quality. Bus exhaust is so noticeable while walking down the street.

  • I wonder what percentages of their buses are converted and how long until all of the buses are. rushlan
