Additional Comments: There is a law which in a few years will only allow mercury light bulbs to be sold. There is a congresswoman who is trying to repeal the phase-out of conventional light bulbs.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs save energy & emit less greenhouse gasses. I've switched all of mine over. I haven't had one burn out yet, so I haven't had to worry about disposal. I do remember playing with a glass thermometer as a kid & getting a kick out of the balls of mercury that came out of them if they broke. The CFL bulbs contain very small amounts of mercury. You probably ingest more every time you eat a tuna sandwich.

I wish someone would tell us what is happening with all that mercury once we throw them out.

  • Don't throw them in the garbage! Take them to the hazardous waste depot or the recycling depot or wherever your town directs. SQ
