Topic: What do you think, if anything, about Sylvia Browne?

Topic Posted by: Zach
Date Posted: Thu Jun 26 1:28:52 2008
Additional Comments:

I have read a few of her books, but I am a bit surprised that virtually everything I have read on the net about her is negative.

I find this a bit ridiculous, especially when the arguments focus on whether or not she herself is authentic, while that is more irrelevant than whether or not her theories themselves are credible, regardless of how good she is.

still though, it's notable.  I believe in past lives, but many don't, and I don't really care who agrees with me or not, since it's futile to argue and unimportant.  still though why so many disbelievers feel the need to taint her? just wondering :/

I liked the remark she made, people who shuffle their feet when they walk are aliens.  I hate people who are so lazy they can not pick up their feet, so it makes me feel better that these people are not of this world.  Now if those feet shufflers will just leave Earth.

If she ever had any psychic abilities she lost them. I felt so bad for the Hornbeck's when she told them their son was dead, when he was very much alive. Anyone who charges people to tell them the whereabouts of their loved one should be ashamed of themselves. She has made a fortune out of other people's misfortunes. You know the old saying "what goes around, comes around"? Well I think that is what is happening to her. She has some kind of illness, that is why she is not touring anymore. I can't believe Montel has had her on his show every week for years.

  • I should have said the Akers, because Hornbeck was the last name of their son.
  • Perfect example of her being a fraud. What were the chances that their son was still alive? I'm sure she thought she was safe in predicting otherwise. eom RL

I'll laugh myself silly, if Y&R shows Sylvia Browne to be a total fraud when it comes to her psychic abiliites regarding Kay Chancellor, Violet Montgomery, and the whole Phillip III baby-switching yarn thrown together by Lynn Moonbeam Latham. .. How funny if the new writers would eventually reveal that Uncle Langley, Ethan 'Cane' Ashby, and Old Sylvia were in cahoots to milk Chancellor dry.

"While I do believe some people have a gift of psychic abilities, I think she's a complete fraud.  A friend of mine believes in her abilities and talked me into reading one of her books.  I couldn't even get halfway through it.

A regular poster on this and several other boards recently referred to Edgar Cayce as a *nutjob.*  I have read numerous books about him.  I believe he did have this gift, and he was far from a *nutjob.*

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I also think Edgar Cayce was legit. Quite a phenomena in his own way. I'm not so sure about Sylvia B. But I do believe like you that their are people with a definite psychic gift. Like others have posted, I think more of the ones who use their skills to help humanity for a reasonable fee or a minimal charge, rather than asking exorbitant amounts of money for readings, etc. eom/faysie
  • I dunno. Casey's claims to have seen the lost continent of Atlantis, saying that our souls spend time on other planets, and that spirits trapped on earth served as psychic guides for apes to evolve into humans all sounds pretty darn nutty to me. ~i&b
  • i&b, you obviously don't know much about EC if that's all you could pull out of your hat. Besides, how do you know it isn't true? You can't prove it isn't, can you? It seems like you don't believe in things unless you can see, taste, feel, etc., such as God, Jesus, etc., which is obviously your perogative.
  • faysie, I agree. I'm sure you know EC was dirt poor and never asked for money for any of his readings, and was a very religious man who was very involved in his church. He was NOT the kind to scam on anyone, and actually had a very hard time dealing with his gift.
  • One more thing, i&b. EC never said that spirits trapped on earth served as psychic guides for apes to evolve into humans. eom
  • No, I can't prove that none of that is real just as you can't prove it is. However, I choose to rely on plain old common sense. And Casey believed ''spirit 'thought-forms' stayed near and guided the anthropoid ape which was chosen to be the most ideal vehicle for the human physical race to be created from, and psychically guided their separate evolution into a Homo sapiens species.'' IMO, that's nutty but if you can buy that then all the power to you. ~i&b
  • i&b, you are an analytical person, so you need something tangible to believe it's real. Jesus Christ has never appeared to me, but I believe in Him. I don't need something tangible to believe. There were countless instances where Edgar Cayce did readings where he was proved correct. As for the apes, where did you read that? Wikipedia? I agree that some of the things that came out of his mouth while in the hypnotic state were out there, and I don't necessarily believe every word that came out of his readings, but I'm not about to say it's BS because I'm not omniscient. If i lived 3000 years ago and you told me that there were other planets and some day people would build ships to go to them, I'd think you were nuts. I know you like to have the last word, so go ahead. I'm done with this topic. I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone that he was the real deal. I couldn't care less whether you buy psychic abilities or not. eom

There was a show on last year that had her predictions for the prior year and then showed what REALLY happened and almost everything she predicted was wrong...a few things were correct, but mostly she was way off base.

I used to watch Sylvia Browne on Montel for kicks and giggles, but she is wrong most of the time.

I tried reading one of her books and I had to stop because it was so "out-there." She talked about aliens and that we'd be living in domed cities by 2020 -- just some really off-the-wall stuff.

I have no idea who you guys are talking about here but from what I have gained from context I would like to inject some humor..........I remember a funny scene from a Pee Wee Herman movie where the "physic" finds his wallet and then feeds him info based on the photos of his bicycle and sets off a series of events that leads him to the Alamo. Classic camp!!!

I believe there are people who are sensitive to things outside the norm. I don't think Sylvia Brown is one of them. The first time I saw her on TV doing a reading I felt she was only sensitive to the obvious. She has made a couple of big errors and she announces her proclamations like she is a god and knows all. I think people find that irritating. I don't know what her theories are but the fact is that there are theories gallore and the only true fact is that nobody really knows the truth. However it is very interesting to speculate and discuss.

I think there are people who are psychic and perhaps she is.....but I'm w/Mitch I flip the channel whenever I see her! I've never read her books & have no need to. She seems more like a carnival gypsy than a real psychic to me. I was told once by a woman who read my Tarot that she didn't charge for readings, because it was a gift she had, and to accept $$ would dim the gift!!

Huh?  That makes no sense to me.  ''Oh, she's a fraud but her theories are sound.''  LOL!

And, yeah, I do think she's a fraud.  She preys on the fears and grief of people. When you listen to what she says, it's either completely vague or she's gotten the ''subject'' to talk enough to know what they want to hear.  It's the same old schtick that's been around for centuries.  I don't buy it.

Zach, if she charges $700 per 30 minute reading, doesn't that make her one of the *greedy* people you are always complaining about?  She may not even spend it as *properly* as you feel the wealthy should.

I like her and feel she is a true Physic.  I have recently been reading her books as I have had someone very close to me die and alot of what she writes gives me comfort.

I have always believed in the afterlife & spirits so I read her book with a very open mind.  Like she states in her books I take what I want and leave the rest.

I also like that she is a Christian based Physic.  She always talks about God and Jesus in her books, etc.

I do take issue with the fact that she charges $700 a reading.  I sure that most people who would like a reading from her can not afford $700. Maybe she's priced herself that high, becuase she is on the verge of retireing anyway is cutting way back on personal appearances and the like.

Frankly, I wish she could be arrested.  $700 for 30 minute ''reading''? Whether or not it produces any facts?

Ever notice how most of TV psychics talk fast?  Sort of like a barker at the circus.  No one more than I would want the dead to communicate with me. NO ONE!  There are some people with the proven ability to sense things such as those I see on Psychic Detectives but funny not many people know their names.  Is it because they arent in it for the cash?

Why doesnt Sylvia take the million dollar challenge?  Mr Randi said Sylvia said she ''couldnt get in contact with him.'' LOL  SHE CLAIMS SHE CAN CONTACT THE DEAD FGS!

When she told Shaun Hornbeck's parents (ON TV) that their son was dead and he was later found alive, well that was the final straw.

If this is too much to read just watch part 3. http://www.randi.org/sylvia/index.html

Is she the psychic I see on daytime talk shows?  Like Montel Williams' show?  I must not think much of her because I always change the station.

The psychic that really impressed me was Dorothy Allison, who assisted the Chicago police in gathering evidence against John Wayne Gacy.
