Topic: It was a disgrace how the Canadian women celebrated their hockey championship!

Topic Posted by: Mellow Music
Date Posted: Sat Feb 27 15:11:30 2010
Additional Comments: I was disgusted with it and so were many commentators on ESPN. Smoking cigars, drinking champagne when you were still in the middle of the ice rink and when many were underage! That's not classy and very unladylike! Come on USA men, beat the crap out of Canada and show them what class is all about!

Are we in war with Canada over a women's hockey game? It was just a game people. Canada played a good game no need to get hostile. Here's a pic from South Park the movie and I hope people here have a sense of humour. Remember this song? It was so funny.

Replies: (list all replies)

  • I would have posted the song but it has swear words in it so I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post it.
  • Love that song. Loved that movie. They poke fun at everyone and as evidenced by the closing ceremonies, we can laugh at ourselves. Give it a few days and we'll all be joking about the beer and cigar moment!/Betty
  • I'll bet you South Park is going to have field day with all of this. I'm sure they're going to write an episode about it.

Give me a break! Jon Montgomery walked the streets of Whistler, had a pitcher of beer handed to him and chugged from it and we all loved it even though public drinking is illegal. But holy sh*t, women drinking in a public place and all the prudes in the world get their undies in a knot! What's the difference? These women did NOTHING to disgrace themselves, they went back to the place where they won the gold, took pics of each other, sat along the boards talking, lay on the ice taking it all in and had a few sips of beer and champagne and had a few puffs on a cigar. Men drink champagne from the Stanley Cup every year and it's great, it's tradition, it's expected. If the guys win the cup in the US where age of majority is 21, do you think the under age guys refrain from drinking? Hell no! Yet 1 woman, the one who scored BOTH goals and is one month shy of being legal in BC has a few sips and the American Press photographer makes a big deal of it.

Hell... I'da been right out there with um had it been me... and I'm an American.  Congratulations to those women, I know all Canadians are proud of them.

You know in light of some of the things that were said here on this board [on both sides] about this situation... may I suggest we look at what's really going on here?  Some news person reported this story and then all the news sorces took something innocent and turned it into something ugly and ''news worthy'' to get peoples attention... and the flames were fanned into a bon-fire and a whole lotta people came... and people all took sides over a story that was blown way out of proportion, and said ugly things to one another... all over nothing.

There's a lot of good people here... we don't all have to agree but we surely shouldn't be calling each other names.  Please may we stop and think before jumping on one another?  Words can hurt, deeply.

Okay... I'll climb down off this soap box now. LOL  Thanks for listening./OT

You know, I was the first one (below) to defend the girls.  But, when  some of you come back with the ''sour grapes'' comments, and criticism of Apollo, it makes me regret that I tried to defend them.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I guess you are referring to me about ApolloOhno. It was his own words that,in my opinion, made him look bad. He said he was disqualifed because it was a Canadian ref and it was on Canadian soil. I felt bad for him to have been disqualified until I heard his comments. Diane
  • I am not sure Apolo should have been brought into this either. However, I hoep he apologises for his cheating accusation last night. We like him in Canada and respect how good he is at his sport, but to cry foul like he did was so not like him. This judge has disqualified numerous Canadians and has an impeccable reputation...that's why he was in the Olympics. I am sure it was in the heat of the moment and I would bet he'll apologise. That said....that judge/ref wasn't even supposed to be working last night. It was supposed to be an Aussie but he received numerous death threats from Korean fans for his DQ of the women's relay team the other night. That's awful and more of a story than the whole Apolo thing IMO./Betty
  • And my sour grapes comment was towards the reporter. Not Americans in general. Sheesh. Denise
  • LAWD! I wish I had never gotten into this! If I ever do again, I hope my laptop catches fire! ....KY
  • LOL KY!! /Betty
  • I'm still trying to figure out the original poster's 'unladylike' criticism. They had just won a HOCKEY GAME, for crying out loud. Ladylike? So they should perhaps be drinking tea with their pinkies up or something? Gimme a break! I heard that Ohno was disqualified but hadn't heard his comment, which I think sounds quite unfortunate and like sour grapes ... shades of the Russian criticizing the American skater who took the gold in men's figure skating - it's not fair because I didn't win. GMAB! .............. Ashley
  • Ashley, with all the sponsorship going on in the Olympics these days, I bet the whole issue is that they're not drinking Cokes and eating Big Macs!! ;-)/Betty
  • I think it would be nice to declare a moratorium on GMAB and GMAFB. The use of those two seems like a failure of vocabulary.
  • Why just those two? Why not all of them? What makes them any worse than LOL or TBTB?? I notice you didn't even sign your name. There's no need to hide when giving your opinion./Betty
  • These two sound particularly juvenile is the reason I singled them out. There is nothing wrong with the abbreviation, it is the silliness of the expression. ''Give me a break''? What does that mean in terms of what the person was trying to say?
  • It's an old expression and if you don't like it that's fine but don't tell others how to talk. Especially since you can't even bother to sign your name. You can't feel strong enough about it if you are scared to sign your name. I make is a point to not address anyone scared enough to sign their name (unless of course it is a personal issue) and perhaps I should have not bothered this time and won't anymore. /Betty
  • I did not ''tell anyone how to talk''. I said it would be nice to have a moratorium on that expression. Maybe you should read a little more carefully before starting to accuse and call names.
  • I didn't call you a name...you're too chicken to give one so you don't deserve a response. I did read your moratorium high an mighty post. I will say what I want and use what expressions I want....just like everyone else here. And there's nothing wrong with that. Personally I do prefer to type everything out but these anacronyms are just faster to use in these days of texting. This for sure is my last post to someone who is so sure of him/herself that they can't post a name. I am off to watch the closing ceremonies./Betty

I am proud of the Canadian women's hockey team and they deserved all the celebrating and more. The one under-age player is indeed legally able to consume in her home province, so give her a break. If it had been the men doing this, I think it would have hardly caused a ripple. And if it had been the US team? I think it would have been equally un-newsworthy. A bunch of adults were celebrating a sweet victory - get over it.

And as for men's hockey - how is "beating the cr@p" out of the other team showing "class"? You obviously have no clue what class is all about.

I think your comments are a disgrace. Many were underage?? Really?? Only one and she is of legal age in her home province and training province. Also, it is NOT illegal to consume alcohol when you're underage. Who hasn't had a drink when they were underage? Please. Most of Europeans have wine with their meals. I hear that Bode Miller likes to drink before he skis....same for the former great Alberto Tomba. But since they're men it's ok.

I take EXTREME offence to you saying that Canadians have NO class and we need to be shown some by some professional millionaires? You mean like Patrick Kane who was arrested for beating on a cab driver? Or your bobsleigh rider who was arrested for beating his wife/girlfriend? Please. You want to talk about no class? What about the US women putting a Canadian flag on their dressing room floor and stomping all over it?? We still beat them. Two times....sorry they couldn't even get to the final last Olympics.

They won the gold medal for the 3rd time in a row....shutting out the US team. That is the second time the US was beaten by Canada for the gold. They didn't even make the final the last Olympics. Sweden beat them in a shutout.

Let them celebrate. No one was in the arena other than a few members of the press and the cleaning crew. No one cares but for a few sore losers from what I hear. The IOC doesn't care, nor does anyone who knows anything about hockey. Those girls have been training hard for years and they won the gold medal. Let them have their beer....on an empty rink.

Wow...we care what a bunch of loser ESPN commentators say. Please GMAFB. We see constant celebrations where men spray champagne all over the place...and some of them are underage too. Who the eff cares?
I guess it would be ok if they were in bikinis like a certain skier posing in one on the mountain. Or bent over on the cover of SI? Real class there.

Whatever happens in tomorrow's game I am proud of our Canadian athletes. After all we have the MOST gold medals of any country. And we don't value sport over all else.
I seriously think that you should reconsider your classless last statement. Canada has been nothing but a great neighbour to the US and I am sure that you do not speak for most Americans because I have not heard much from them other than the sore losers.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Ditto Ditto to everything you said. I usually only lurk but her comments really infuriated me. So nasty. I think she is the one who is the disgrace. I wonder what espn will have to say about Apollo Ohno and his comments about the Canadian ref and his disqualification. Now that was a class act.
  • ITA w/ everythign you said, Betty...........DebS
  • Betty, you GO girl! ITA with your reply & I'm American!.....................Liz
  • (Sam) I'm just amazed that the clowns on ESPN covered something hockey related! Most of my hockey loving American fan friends tell me that ESPN sucks but boy, when something gossip worthy happens they're right on it!
  • Thanks everyone. I love Americans so I hope that no one thinks I don't I was just drawing conclusions to some of the things said by those no-nothing ESPN (no hockey coverage) commentators. /Betty

  • I don't know who reporte d the story but I believe in the picture you posted, they are all of age. What's wrong with a adult enjoying champagne or beer? They can serve it in the stands, so why not!! I don't care who reported it, because it really is a non story and most people really don't care./Betty
  • KY, truly, what is so wrong with it? How is it any different than a proffessional football team celebrating on the field afterwards, or an NHL team doing something similar? Because they are women? I know for a fact that a few years back I read that a professional football team went out to their field after the fans left, reporters etc toting lawn chairs and having a beer under the touchdown thingy. I remember hubby said something like they were savouring the moment.I read it but I am sure it was likely on tv too.
  • (me...fanning the flames off my laptop)....When in the heck did I say there was anything wrong with it? I DEFENDED them FGS, and I feel like I'm being racked over the coals here. I was only showing you that it wasn't just an American reporting this. I'm through with this now for good!!! Heaven help me if I ever try to defend anyone again!!....KY.
  • I apologize then KY. But I took your '' blame an american if you want. Please look inside'' comment differently than what you may have meant it to be. If so, I apologize.
  • And yes, that is a canuck pic. The one in our morning paper was an american news carrier... APS .I should not have mentioned the reporter in the first place but just spoke to the OP about the ladies celebrating. Denise
  • I wasn't attacking you either. I was just saying that I don't care who took the pics at all as it is a non issue. Calm down my friend, no one is attacking you like you aren't attacking us. It's ok...we're all friends. Some us here are just defending our women hockey players and maybe get a little fired up. Again, it doesn't matter at all who took the pictures. It's just because of a few sore losers trying to make an issue when there isn't one. Don't worry about it. /Betty

(I only heard about 1 underaged young woman being involved). IMO they should have had their celebration in their dressing room away from any possibility of prying eyes. I think the Olympic spirit is so high in Canada, and they were so elated at their gold medal win that they didn't think of the possible consequences. But I'm still mighty proud of them!

  • Actually the IOC doesn't care. It is a non issue to them. It would be hard for an organization with mostly Europeans to get upset at drinking!! /Betty
  • I didn't just ''make that up'', but I should have been more specific. The IOC was originally upset and did an inquiry. Gilbert Felli, IOC executive director of the Olympic Games, surprisingly started the outrage ball rolling when informed of the celebration Thursday night. Said Felli: Gilbert Felli, IOC executive director of the Olympic Games, surprisingly started the outrage ball rolling when informed of the celebration Thursday night. Said Felli: ''If that's the case, that is not good. It is not what we want to see'' Apparently they decided it didn't need further investigation...KY
  • I am just stating what I heard here on the news. The IOC had a meeting and it wasn't even brought up so it really is a non-issue to most people. Heaven forbid some women who only get attention every 4 years celebrate a gold medal win over their toughest competition. They apologized and that's the end of the story. All that said I am sure that if it was men no one would say a thing...just like when we see all the drinking and celebrating in professional sports. Some of them are underage too./Betty
