Topic: I have a boo boo

Additional Comments: Okay it's a bit bigger than a boo boo.  Last night I went to play racquetball with a friend and we were pretty competitive.  Somehow I went sliding full steam ahead, feet first, into one of the walls.  I have totally smashed by right foot.  Two MTP joints are dislocated and will not reduce back into place, tendons are ripped across the top of my foot, not to mention those little bones across the top of my foot and in two toes that are smashed.  It was just a freaky accident and I have never had so much pain in my entire life.  I spent the night in the hospital but they don't want to operate for a week to let the bruising and swelling go down a bit.  So next Friday I will have two screws put in the joints and they will do whatever other repairs they told me about that I couldn't wrap my pain killer-induced brain around.  I will read all the paperwork tomorrow, when I might be more clear-headed.  Oh yeah, I have to be non-weightbearing for 8 weeks.  Serialmom, I completely understand what you were talking about a while ago.  I can go back to work in about 2 weeks, the orthopedic surgeon said, but in a wheelchair or with crutches and my new boss is very accommodating.  Say ouch for me!

Rushlan, I am so sorry.  I've had two foot surgeries and being non-weight bearing is a drag.  You poor baby!

  • Thank you Babyducks. I hope you never have another foot surgery. I had one years ago on my other foot, but it was a very minor surgery, just removing a neuroma. It was a bit painful, but I could walk afterwards with the boot they gave me. I have no idea how I am going to do this for 8 weeks, but I know that I will. rushlan

Oh honey.... HONEY! I have this "thing" about my feet and anything dropping, falling, running into them cuz it hurts me real bad!!! I soo feel your pain. Do keep us informed and the best advice I can give is... take the meds BEFORE the pain kicks in from the wearing off of the last meds! Make sense? Good luck!

  • Thanks DiscoDiva. I completely understand what you are saying about the taking the drugs before the previous dose wears off. the problem is the first dose, second dose, and third doses have not taken the pain away. Or if it has, it is just too much pain to take completely away. Hopefully as the swelling goes down it will lessen. I am with you on the foot thing, I hate having a bad foot. It makes everything other thing hurt, even my hair it seems. LOL. rushlan
  • When I had knee surgery once, my meds were not strong enuf and when i went for a check up I mentioned it to the nurse, without batting an eye, she prescribed me a stronger version of the same pill. Try it!!!! DD
  • DD - that is exactly what I did, actually my beau did. He is a physician so he call the ortho doc and told him he was going to prescribe me some oxycontin or oxycodone or something else, but oh man this stuff works. I am kinda looped, but I got no pain this morning. rushlan

  • Thanks Pronoun. I think you are right, it is going to be a while before I will be back to normal. Of course, that presumes I was normal to begin with! rushlan

Oh you poor thing!!! First the ear thing and now this?! I am so very sorry!! I hope they gave you a lot of pain medication.

So what do they do when they have to wait to operate? Do they put your foot in a cast, or a brace, or what? It totally stinks you have to be on crutches for 8 weeks. That would drive me nuts!

I hope you feel better soon. Get lots of rest and keep that foot up!

  • thanks DebS. The ear was a piece of cake compare to this. really after about three or four days, it was pretty much back to normal. Right now I have a sort of traction-like thing on my foot that will not allow me to move a single toe or joint in any direction. It's pretty funky looking, like a big brace. My foot looks about three times it's normal size, and I have pretty small feet - size 5-1/2, so it really looks weird to me. I will surely be getting lots of rest this week. rushlan

Oh, rushlan, I am sorry to hear about your foot injury. It sounds so painful. I hope your surgery and recovery go as smoothly as possible. I hope the painkillers are helping.

  • Thanks Smartin. I am sure the surgery will go well. I just wish I didn't have to wait for another prescription. The one I have now is useless, or maybe it's just too much pain for a painkiller. rushlan

I'm just now out of my wrist splint that I've been wearing since the 5th of February.  I've had a broken bone in my foot (nothing like yours!), but that was nothing compared to the misery of this wrist, hand and arm.  Thank you, God, that it is my left hand, not my dominant hand.  I now have a titanium plate and 12 screws in the radius and ulna of my left arm and wrist.

    So for you, rushlan, OUCH!

I hope you get better soon.  My one word of advice:  DRUGS!

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Good gosh Jenny, how did you hurt your wrist? That sounds horrific. I hope it won't be bothersome for you for too much longer. I do have some drugs, and they aren't working all that well. I have a call in to the ortho doc to see what he can switch me to. rushlan
  • I fell, being my graceful self. I was out for a walk, tripped on a rising concrete sidewalk paver and put my hand out to save hitting my head or face into the concrete. I actually jammed my wrist into my ulna and radius, requiring reconstruction. 12 weeks in a cast and/or splint is not fun. But using two hands is so necesary for many things. I couldn't even get the toothpaste cap off! Couldn't wear certain undies (the ones with hooks) and taking a shower was murder before I got the removeable splint. But your injury sounds much worse, as far as pain goes. I hope your surgery goes well. My surgery was a breeze, but the pain afterwards was pretty awful. Get well! eom/Jenny
  • Well that does not sound like a good time, but it seems that your pain is coming to an end. Thank goodness! I don't wish pain on anyone. rushlan
