(In another post, someone asked whether Obama has ever actually attended (LOL?) the State sessions, or authored/sponsored anything. It got me curious.... here's what I found. This is copied from http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400629 )

Statistics: Barack Obama has sponsored 136 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 122 haven't made it out of committee and 2 were successfully enacted. Obama has co-sponsored 653 bills during the same time period.

Some of Obama's most recently sponsored bills include...

S. 2030: A bill to amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require reporting relating to bundled contributions made by persons other than registered lobbyists.
S. 2111: Positive Behavior for Effective Schools Act
S. 2066: Back to School: Improving Standards for Nutrition and Physical Education in Schools Act of 2007
S.Con.Res. 46: A concurrent resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month.
S.Con.Res. 44: A concurrent resolution expressing the sense of Congress that a commemorative postage stamp should be issued honoring Rosa Louise McCauley Parks.

DianeR and X, do you consider issues of genetic testing, veterans' affairs, education, and nuclear proliferation and security to be ''tepid'' also?  Because those are just a few of the issues covered in the 1,300 bills introduced or co-sponsored by Obama.  Seriously, y'all need to do some reading.

How are these resolutions going to get this country out of the mess it is in?  Very tepid legislation.

  • How are they going to get you out of the mess you're in? IMO a good way to start would be to get rid of the Rep President! who has veto power over passing any new bills into power. By the way, I'm not sure what you personally consider to be 'non tepid' legislation, but IMO these things are pretty important: American Fuels Act, Transparency & Accountability in Military & Security Contracting, Oil Sense, Nuclear Weapons Threat Reduction, Innovation Districts for School Improvements, Fuel Economy, VA Hospital Quality, Improving Emergency Medical Care & Response, Veterans Health & Benefits Improvements, Lead Free Toys, Improved Standard for Nutrition & Physical Education in Schools, Security Contractors Accountability, Nuclear Release Notice, Veterans Homeless Prevention, Contracting & Tax Accountability, Strengthening Transparency & Accountability in Federal Spending...... In no way do I consider these things 'Tepid Legislation' but I guess you do ?? eom/faysie

Oh, yeah, he's addressed some tough issues, alright.....a postage stamp, more funds for sickle cell (admirable, but still, who would object?), nutrition in schools and contribution disclosures.  Hmmm, yeah, that's ground-breaking stuff!

  • (sigh).... guess you didn't bother to click on - View More ' --- there are many, many more listed if you care to look. eom/faysie
  • oops - it's called 'View All' - just go above and see the rest. I guess probably different people have different opinions about which of these topics are of more or less importance. eom/faysie

Regarding resolutions 3 and 4, what about other diseases, and other heroes/heroines?

I know I'm going to sound racist, and go ahead, flame on, but he has an agenda, and now after reading this, I'm convinced of this.

Yes, we needed civil rights legislation back in the 60's.  There was a very dark time in history, when people were bought and sold as slaves (some, by people of their own race, BTW).

But, we are decades and generations away from that, and there has been so much legislation to help the black regain what was lost years ago, that the scales have now become lopsided.

If you are a white male, and work for the Federal Government, (or private industry), forget about promotions based on ability.  If there is a black that can be put in the slot, then they are - forget about qualifications.

We now have a black man running for the highest office in the land.  If that is not equality, then I don't know what is.  I feel that this issue has come full circle, and the time for EEO legislation has to be rescinded.  EVERYONE should be equal - and, for the most part, they are.

We have Black History month.  What about Jewish History month?

Yes, slavery was a horrible thing, but at least they didn't have to watch while their infant children were thrown into ovens, and watch an entire race be annihilated.  Yet, you do not hear the Jews whining and complaining, wanting special laws enacted so that they receive preferential treatment.  Not here, and not in Germany.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

We have Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Japanese, so many minorities, who haven't whined and complained for decades that they want special privledges. Only the blacks.

If Obama gets in office, we are going to have more legislation favoring African-Americans, and the whites will still suffer reverse discrimination.  When a qualified caucasian cannot get into a college, because a "quota: has to be filled for a less qualified minority, then why is this not discrimination?

  • I didn't have time to review all of them, but I did note S.Con.Res.96 which he introduced in July 08. 'A concurrent resolution commemorating Irena Sendler, a woman whose bravery saved the lives of thousands during the Holocaust and remembering her legacy of courage, selflessness, and hope.' The link is inside.
  • I hate to break it to you, AJA, but we already have Jewish American History Month. ~i&b

Well, to add insult to injury, can you tolerate a VP who pronounces Iraq as

Eye-raq? ... That would go over so well at the negotiating table, wouldn't it?

I am of Italian descent, and I absolutely hate it when people call Italians, Eye-talians?  After all, they do not say Eye-taly, do they?

This kind of behaviour, wherever found, indicates a lack of awareness or concern for others .... and often politicians do NOT GET IT!

  • Listen to how Obama pronounced the word ''to''. He says ''ti''. That would really go over great at the negotiating table........................DianeR
  • To? You're criticizing his pronounciation of the word TO? And this is going to impede our foreign negotiations? It is becoming harder to take you seriously every day. //SqueezeMe

  • Don't you find it irritating when people either intentionally or with intention say things like that? LOL. All it takes is a couple of minutes to do a little research! eom/faysie
  • Yes I do, faysie. I've arrived at the conclusion they're not interested in the truth. In case you're wondering I've just learned that there's already a Marie on this board, so I've added an initial to my name. Hopefully that will help.
  • That's my post above. MarieH eom MarieH
  • Thx... I noticed that about there being 2 'Maries'... I was thinking how nice is was that you both were so gracious about it! Nice to have polite people on board. I'll remember that you're 'MarieH' - the one who likes to talk politics! eom/faysie
